Short answer: YouTube lets you reuse a stream key as an encoder setting, but its standard setup guidance does not confirm that two independent encoders can safely send competing feeds to the same ordinary ingest at once. The right setup depends on whether you mean a backup, a second video format, or a separate broadcast.
What a YouTube stream key does—and what reuse means
A stream key is a credential an encoder uses to send a feed to YouTube. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” You can create a custom key and reuse it for later streams; that does not, by itself, establish that simultaneous feeds from two encoders to one standard ingest are supported. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings
Keep two questions separate: whether both encoder configurations can contain the same saved key, and whether both encoders should transmit different feeds to the same ingest at once. YouTube documents key reuse, failover testing, a protocol-specific HLS redundant-copy method, and a second-key setup for horizontal and vertical output. It does not give general approval for two ordinary RTMP encoders to compete on one ingest. Encoder setup · Failover tips
Choose the setup that matches your goal
Reuse a key for a later stream
For a later broadcast, you can reuse a custom stream key by entering it in the encoder with the stream URL. If you think the key has been exposed, reset it in YouTube’s live-stream settings and update the encoder with the new key. Manage live stream settings · Create a live stream with an encoder

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keep a backup encoder ready
For a failover plan, YouTube recommends testing the rollover: stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet, then check that the player switches to the backup. That is a tested handoff, not an instruction to transmit two arbitrary feeds concurrently to one standard ingest. YouTube live streaming tips
Send horizontal and vertical versions
For dual-format output from a third-party encoder, YouTube’s guidance says to use RTMP(S), select a second stream key for the vertical stream, and send each format to its corresponding key. Do not assume the same-key backup arrangement is the right configuration for two different formats. Get started with live streaming

Use redundant HLS ingestion
YouTube documents a specific HLS workflow for sending a redundant second copy. It uses the same key but a backup URL with a different hostname and a different copy= value from the primary. The backup must use a different copy= value to avoid corrupting the stream. This is an HLS-specific procedure; do not generalize it to ordinary RTMP encoder setups. Follow the full HLS ingestion instructions for the encoder you use.
Run separate broadcasts
YouTube’s Live Streaming API treats a stream and a broadcast as separate resources: a stream carries transmission settings, while a broadcast represents the event. The API describes using distinct live-stream resources for simultaneous broadcasts that may need different streaming settings, and also describes a case where two broadcasts bind to one stream. Those are different arrangements, not blanket permission to start two encoders with one key. Match the resource setup to the intended relationship between the broadcasts and confirm the current workflow in the API documentation.

Prepare and test before the event
- Decide what the second encoder is for. Identify it as a later reuse, failover backup, vertical output, HLS redundant copy, or separate broadcast. These goals use different configurations.
- Set up early. YouTube recommends setting up encoders at least two hours before an event and starting them at least 15 minutes before it. These are YouTube Help operational recommendations; the page does not state a publication year. Streaming tips
- Check the preview and stream health. Confirm that the intended feed appears in Live Control Room and monitor its health before and during the event. YouTube recommends testing ahead of time and monitoring stream health. Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
- Test failover as a handoff. Stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet and confirm that the player rolls over to the backup. Do not treat two encoders both transmitting as a substitute for this test. YouTube live streaming tips
If the second encoder is already running
- If it is a backup: use YouTube’s failover test—stop the primary and verify the player changes to the backup.
- If it is a vertical version: configure the second key for the vertical feed and route each format to its corresponding key.
- If it is HLS redundancy: use the documented backup hostname and a distinct
copy=value. - If it is a separate event: use distinct stream resources where the API guidance calls for them, and verify the intended arrangement before going live.
- If you cannot identify the workflow: stop the second encoder until you have matched it to the relevant documented setup. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before production.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom or goal | Likely issue | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Two encoders are sending different feeds to one ordinary ingest | YouTube’s standard encoder instructions do not establish this as a supported concurrent setup. | Choose the intended workflow: tested failover, second key for vertical output, HLS redundancy, or separate stream resources for separate broadcasts. |
| The backup does not take over | The failover path has not been verified, or the primary is still transmitting. | Run YouTube’s prescribed test by stopping the primary or disconnecting its Ethernet, then confirm that the player rolls over. |
| Horizontal and vertical feeds are misrouted | The third-party dual-stream setup is not using the corresponding keys. | Select a second key for the vertical stream and check that each format is sent to its intended key. |
| Redundant HLS copies interfere | The backup URL or its copy= value does not differ as required. |
Follow the HLS procedure with a different backup hostname and a different copy= value. |
| A key no longer works as expected | The saved key may have been reset or compromised. | Review stream-key settings; reset a compromised key and update the encoder credentials. |
When an always-on stream is the actual goal
If the goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on a YouTube channel around the clock rather than operate two encoders, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Every slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
