Compare specific plans in the same region using your stream’s bitrate, monthly outbound traffic, and whether the virtual machine (VM) encodes video or only relays an already encoded feed. DigitalOcean pools included transfer across a team and charges for outbound use above its allowance; Lightsail’s allowance varies by bundle and region. The right choice depends on those details—not the provider name.
Start with what the VM must do
A cloud VM can handle different parts of a broadcast. If it encodes video, it must sustain the CPU workload for the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, and encoder settings. If it only relays a pre-encoded stream, its compute needs differ. Remuxing—changing a media container without re-encoding—also differs from encoding. Neither provider’s plan descriptions establish that a particular VM can encode your stream successfully; test the selected software and configuration under sustained load.
Do not treat a provider’s “compute-optimized” label or a published network ceiling as a workload-specific performance guarantee. Choose candidate plans based on the actual job, then validate them before depending on them for a continuous broadcast.
Compare the plans that matter

DigitalOcean’s bandwidth allowance is team-pooled, so the relevant figure is not necessarily the allowance of one Droplet in isolation. For Lightsail, check the selected instance bundle and region; do not assume every region gets the same allowance.

Estimate bandwidth before comparing costs
For a single constant-bitrate stream, a useful planning estimate is 10.8 × bitrate in Mbps = decimal GB sent in a 30-day month. It follows from multiplying the bitrate by the seconds in 30 days and converting megabits to decimal gigabytes; it is not a provider-published usage statistic.

The bitrate examples are from YouTube’s encoder settings guidance, accessed 2026-10-03; they are examples, not a universal quality prescription. The transfer estimates omit protocol overhead, any audio bitrate not included in the target, restarts, and additional or backup feeds. They also use decimal GB, so compare them carefully with each provider’s billing units and allowance definitions.

YouTube recommends calculating upload capacity with the primary feed, backup feed, and 20% headroom. In its encoder guidance, YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Use the target bitrate to check both network capacity and monthly transfer, while remembering that a provider’s stated maximum throughput does not guarantee a specific stream’s performance.
Choose a provider using your own workload
- Set the stream target. Choose resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate using YouTube’s encoder guidance and the content you plan to broadcast.
- Decide what the VM does. Identify whether it encodes, remuxes, or relays pre-encoded media. Size CPU and memory for that job, not just the stream’s bitrate.
- Pick candidate bundles in the same region. Compare the actual DigitalOcean Droplet and Lightsail plans you would use, including regional Lightsail transfer allowances and DigitalOcean team-level pooling.
- Estimate monthly traffic. Apply the bitrate calculation to the primary feed and include backup feeds or other outbound traffic if you will run them.
- Calculate the full cost and test. Include plan charges and likely outbound overage. Run the encoder or relay under sustained load, observe resource use and stream stability, and test restart and alert behavior before relying on it.
This process is the only defensible way to answer “Which VPS is cheaper for a 24/7 YouTube stream?” without your bitrate, region, encoding method, traffic estimate, and candidate bundle prices. A provider’s headline plan price alone does not settle the comparison.

Plan for YouTube’s limits and operational failures
A 24/7 broadcast is not necessarily a 24/7 archive
YouTube says that if a live stream exceeds 12 hours, “it may not be captured at all.” See YouTube’s archive live streams guidance, accessed 2026-10-03. If you need a recording, design a separate archive process and keep a local or other independent copy; do not assume YouTube will retain the entire continuous broadcast.
Check channel access before building the setup
YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restriction in the prior 90 days to stream. Check eligibility in the channel before configuring the VM. Follow YouTube’s advice to preview and monitor the encoder stream rather than treating a running process as proof that viewers are receiving a healthy broadcast.

Build recovery into the design
A VM can remain powered on while the encoder process exits, the source becomes unavailable, or the connection to YouTube is interrupted. Configure process supervision and alerts, define how the stream restarts, and test failure recovery. If continuity matters, decide separately how you will provide a backup source or feed; factor its additional bandwidth into the estimate.
