Best DigitalOcean Droplet Size for a 24/7 YouTube Live Stream

For a Droplet encoding one YouTube stream, benchmark with a 2-vCPU/4-GB CPU-Optimized plan; relay-only workloads can start on shared CPU. Learn how to size, test, and estimate transfer.

For a single stream that the Droplet must encode or transcode, use a 2-vCPU/4-GB CPU-Optimized Droplet as a starting point for benchmarking—not as a capacity guarantee. DigitalOcean identifies video and live streaming as CPU-Optimized workloads and lists 2 vCPUs and 4 GB RAM as the family’s starting configuration. If you only relay an already-encoded feed, start with a small shared-CPU Basic Droplet and scale based on measured use. The right size depends on the actual encoding workload, not simply on running 24/7.

If you want a YouTube stream to keep running without managing a server, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.

Choose a Droplet based on what it does

First determine whether the server is relaying a finished stream or encoding video itself. A relay forwards media that is already encoded; encoding or transcoding asks the CPU to process video continuously. Resolution, frame rate, codec, encoder preset, number of outputs, and whether the source is pushed to or pulled by the server all affect the load.

Workload Starting direction What to verify
Relay or forward an already-encoded feed Begin with a small shared-CPU Basic Droplet. Measure CPU, memory, network throughput, and transfer use during the actual stream. Shared CPU is intended for low-to-moderate usage with occasional bursts.
Software-encode or transcode one feed on the Droplet Benchmark with a 2-vCPU/4-GB CPU-Optimized Droplet. Test representative content at the intended codec, resolution, frame rate, and encoder preset. The plan family is a documented workload match, not a promise that this size can encode every stream.
Multiple encodes, high-resolution output, or additional media services Use dedicated CPU and size up from observed peak use. Measure the combined sustained load. Do not assume capacity scales in a fixed way from a single-stream estimate.
Outbound network or cost is the main constraint Compare each plan’s included transfer and any overage before choosing. Premium CPU throughput and included transfer are separate considerations; a high throughput figure does not mean unlimited included data.

DigitalOcean recommends matching a plan to measured resource use, benchmarking, and load testing before settling on a production configuration. Its documentation does not publish a benchmark establishing that a particular Droplet size can sustain a specific 24/7 YouTube stream. The 2-vCPU/4-GB recommendation here is a starting inference from DigitalOcean’s workload category and the CPU-Optimized family’s listed entry size, not a tested result. See DigitalOcean’s plan selection guidance and Droplet size information.

Set the YouTube ingest stream correctly

Droplet sizing will not compensate for a misconfigured encoder. Choose YouTube’s recommended bitrate row for the stream’s codec, resolution, and frame rate. In the current YouTube Help guidance checked October 3, 2026, the H.264 examples include:

Output Recommended H.264 bitrate
1080p60 12 Mbps
1080p30 10 Mbps
720p60 6 Mbps

YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, or AV1; it recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed 4 seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS as the secure protocol. These are ingest settings, not a Droplet performance guarantee. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the current guidance and the full codec-specific tables.

Estimate continuous outbound transfer

A 24/7 stream sends data continuously. At a steady 12 Mbps, the video payload works out to about 5.4 decimal GB per hour, 129.6 GB per day, or 3,888 GB (about 3.89 decimal TB) in 30 days, before packet and protocol overhead. This is arithmetic based on the bitrate, not a DigitalOcean allowance. Use the actual outbound bitrate for your stream; account separately for inbound media and any additional outputs.

DigitalOcean pools included transfer across a team’s Droplets and charges $0.01 per GiB for additional outbound transfer, according to its current documentation. The included amount depends on the plan and the team’s other usage. Check the live pricing or control panel before deploying; pooled allowance does not roll over. Premium CPU-Optimized plans are described as capable of up to 10 Gbps, but throughput capacity is distinct from the amount of transfer included in the price. See DigitalOcean Droplet pricing.

Benchmark before relying on a 24/7 stream

  1. Reproduce the real workload. Use the intended video, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, encoder preset, and number of outputs. A quiet or low-motion test clip may not represent the actual content.
  2. Run long enough to expose sustained problems. Watch for encoder overload, dropped frames, process restarts, and memory growth rather than judging capacity from a brief launch.
  3. Review Droplet graphs. Monitor CPU, memory, disk, and bandwidth. Shared-CPU performance can vary with workload, so benchmark at expected peak use before committing to production.
  4. Check YouTube stream health. YouTube advises testing audio and movement similar to the intended stream before going live, then monitoring stream health. Its guidance says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
  5. Recheck the cost picture. Compare measured outbound transfer and the team’s pooled allowance, and account for any overage.

DigitalOcean’s monitoring and sizing guidance is at Droplet monitoring documentation and its plan selection guidance.

Understand billing and operational trade-offs

For bundled CPU Droplets, billing continues while a Droplet is powered off because its resources remain reserved; destroying it stops billing. DigitalOcean’s v5 configurations are billed by configured resources and actual hours, without a monthly usage cap, so a continuous month’s total varies with the number of hours in that calendar month. Confirm the current terms and configuration-specific pricing before choosing a plan.

If you need a streaming server stack rather than only a Droplet, DigitalOcean Marketplace documents an SRS 1-Click App. The SRS Stack documentation describes publishing using WebRTC, RTMP, or SRT, recording to MP4, multi-platform restreaming, and FFmpeg transcoding. Its sample API deployment request uses a 2-vCPU/4-GB s-2vcpu-4gb Droplet in SFO2; that is an example request, not a performance recommendation. The documentation was generated March 13, 2024, so check software versions and setup steps before using it. See SRS on DigitalOcean Marketplace and SRS Stack documentation.

Common sizing and streaming problems

  • CPU stays saturated or the encoder reports overload: the Droplet may be too small for the chosen encode settings, or other tasks may be competing for CPU. Benchmark the same content and settings on a larger dedicated-CPU plan, or reduce encoding workload if the output requirements allow.
  • The relay works but CPU readings are low: that is consistent with forwarding an already-encoded feed. Check memory, network throughput, transfer use, and stream health too; low CPU alone does not confirm the full setup is reliable.
  • The stream runs but outbound transfer costs rise: compare actual bitrate and operating time with the monthly estimate, then check the team-wide pooled allowance and other Droplets’ usage.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health: verify the selected codec-specific bitrate, CBR, keyframe interval, and RTMPS configuration against YouTube’s current encoder guidance; test representative audio and motion before relying on the stream.
  • A plan’s advertised network throughput looks ample, but transfer is billed: throughput is the rate data can move; included transfer is a separate allowance. Check both.

Or let it run in the cloud

With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud loops the uploaded video, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Every slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and has 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots.
