You can run a continuous gaming-highlights stream by placing your clips on a Google Compute Engine VM, using FFmpeg to encode and send them to YouTube Live, and supervising the process so it can recover from interruptions. The VM must sustain both the chosen encode and outbound bitrate; there is no universally correct machine size or monthly cost. This guide covers the setup decisions and a cautious example workflow, not a tested, production-ready command.

How the setup works

The path is straightforward: clips and audio are available to the VM; FFmpeg reads and sequences the media, encodes and muxes it; an outbound RTMPS connection sends the stream to YouTube Live; YouTube reports ingest health and creates viewer renditions. YouTube says it automatically detects selected settings and transcodes live streams into formats for different viewers and devices.

This is direct FFmpeg-to-YouTube delivery. Google Cloud’s separate Live Stream API is a managed service with its own input endpoints and output channels; it is not a required intermediary for this design.

Choose output settings for YouTube Live

YouTube’s official encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), supported H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe frequency that must not exceed four seconds. Frame rates up to 60 fps are supported. Its recommended stereo audio setting is 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz; for 5.1 audio, the guidance lists 384 Kbps at 48 kHz. See YouTube’s live encoder settings for the full, current table and codec-specific ranges.

  • On-the-Go Convenience: With an integrated handle and lightweight design (2.8 lbs), our lap desk is portable for travel or moving around the house, offering flexibility in any space.

The following H.264 examples are YouTube’s published minimum and recommended video bitrates, not independently measured network guarantees. The settings page was accessed in 2026; its publication year is not stated.

Output Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
1440p60 8 Mbps 34 Mbps
2160p60 14 Mbps 50 Mbps

Pick a resolution and frame rate that suit the source clips and the VM’s measured capacity. Higher resolution and frame rate need higher recommended bitrate. YouTube publishes different ranges for H.264, HEVC and AV1, so check the relevant codec row rather than applying the H.264 figures to every encoder. Test with representative fast movement, scene changes and audio; a static test image can conceal problems.

Prepare the Compute Engine VM

  1. Choose a project and region. Check the project’s VM, CPU, disk, networking and, if needed, GPU quotas for the intended region before deployment. Quota is project- and region-sensitive and does not guarantee that a resource is available in a particular zone. GPU quotas are separate. See Compute Engine quotas.
  2. Select a machine based on workload. The VM must keep up with decoding, any scaling or other filters, encoding and audio muxing. Whether CPU encoding is sufficient or hardware acceleration is needed depends on the media and selected settings; measure the actual workload before choosing a VM or GPU. The title does not imply that a GPU is required.
  3. Plan storage and media access. Ensure the clips and any audio are reachable by FFmpeg and that the VM has room for the media, logs and temporary files. Confirm that the files can be read in the format and order you intend to play.
  4. Verify outbound capacity from the chosen deployment. Google notes that maximum egress depends on machine type and destination route, and achievable rates have constraints. Provide headroom above the encoder bitrate for protocol overhead and other traffic, then verify sustained delivery from your deployed VM; published maximums are not guaranteed throughput. See Compute Engine networking documentation.

Build and test the FFmpeg media workflow

FFmpeg is the encoder and output tool in this architecture, but a 24/7 playlist is also a media-management problem. Decide the clip order, how the sequence repeats, what should happen if a file is missing, and whether audio should continue seamlessly between clips. A concatenation or looping command depends on the input files and their codecs, streams, frame rates and durations; there is no single verified command that safely handles every collection.

  1. Make a representative test set. Use clips with the same kinds of codecs, frame rates, resolutions, audio layouts and scene motion as the intended library. Confirm each file decodes correctly and determine the sequence and repeat behavior.
  2. Configure the encoder deliberately. Set the selected video codec, output resolution and frame rate, CBR target bitrate, audio codec and bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval. Keep the keyframe interval at or below four seconds. Use YouTube’s current settings guidance for the chosen codec and output profile.
  3. Point the output at YouTube’s ingest endpoint. In YouTube Live, obtain the stream URL and stream key for the broadcast, then configure FFmpeg’s output for the provided endpoint using RTMPS where available. Treat the key as a password: do not put it in a public script, repository, log, screenshot or support request. Store it with suitably restricted access and rotate it if exposed.
  4. Run an end-to-end test before scheduling unattended operation. Start the encoder, verify that YouTube receives the stream and inspect stream health. Check picture, sound, motion, clip transitions and continuity for long enough to expose problems that a short connection test would miss. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation describes stream ingestion details and health states: liveStreams resource.

Any FFmpeg invocation, playlist file or concat script you assemble should be treated as an example until it has been adapted and tested against your media and VM. Check FFmpeg’s documentation for the installed build and the relevant demuxer, filter and encoder options: FFmpeg documentation.

Keep the stream running unattended

A process that starts once is not yet a dependable 24/7 service. Arrange process supervision so FFmpeg can be restarted after a process failure or VM reboot, capture logs with timestamps, monitor both VM resource use and YouTube stream health, and define how alerts reach someone who can respond. Test what happens when the source file is unavailable, the network drops, the VM restarts or YouTube stops receiving the encoder.

A single VM and process are simpler to operate, but they are a single failure path. YouTube’s API schema includes primary and backup stream URLs; that fact alone is not a ready-made failover design. Building independent failover requires additional implementation work and may add cost. Do not assume a backup endpoint or a restart policy makes the system resilient until the failure and recovery path has been tested.

Estimate ongoing Google Cloud cost

There is no universal monthly price for this design. Cost depends on the selected region and machine configuration, how long the VM runs, disk choice and size, and outbound data-transfer pricing. The stream’s sustained bitrate also affects the volume of data sent out over time.

  1. Choose the deployment region, machine type and disk configuration.
  2. Estimate the VM’s continuous runtime and the expected outbound traffic for the chosen bitrate and schedule.
  3. Enter those choices in the Google Cloud pricing calculator, and confirm the applicable network-transfer pricing in the selected region.
  4. Revisit the estimate if you change resolution, frame rate, bitrate, VM type, media storage or operating schedule.

Do not price a GPU by default: first measure whether the selected VM can sustain the required encoding workload. Similarly, do not treat a published egress maximum as proof that your chosen machine can continuously deliver the target bitrate.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want to operate FFmpeg and a VM, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera, and it streams to YouTube only.

Nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
