OBS YouTube Stream Offline After a DNS Change? Test the RTMP Hostname

A DNS lookup can show whether OBS’s configured YouTube hostname resolves—but it cannot prove DNS caused the outage. Compare the current URL, test locally, then check protocol, key, and network.

If your OBS stream went offline after a DNS change, first compare the complete server URL in OBS with the current Stream URL in YouTube Live Control Room, then look up that URL’s hostname from the same computer running OBS. A failed lookup means the name is not resolving through that computer’s current DNS resolver; a successful lookup does not prove the stream can connect. DNS may have coincided with the outage without causing it.

1. Confirm YouTube’s current stream destination

  1. Open the active stream in YouTube Live Control Room and find its current Stream URL. YouTube instructs creators to copy this URL into the encoder’s server field: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  2. Check which protocol you intend to use. YouTube recommends RTMPS where the encoder supports it; the RTMPS URL is available through the Stream URL control, which may initially display an ordinary RTMP URL. See Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
  3. In OBS, open Settings > Stream and compare the server entry with YouTube’s current URL. Look for a stale hostname, typo, missing or incorrect protocol, or other difference. Compare the actual server address; do not post or share your stream key. YouTube treats the key like a password. More on the URL and key: Manage live stream settings.

Use the destination shown for the active stream, not a hostname remembered from an older setup or copied from an unrelated post. YouTube’s guidance does not establish a single canonical hostname or IP address for every stream.

2. Test the hostname from the OBS computer

A DNS lookup is a practical way to check whether the configured hostname resolves through the affected machine’s current resolver. Run the lookup on the computer and network that OBS uses—not on a phone using mobile data or a different computer.

  1. Take only the hostname from YouTube’s server URL. Leave out the protocol (such as rtmps://), any port, and any path.
  2. Open the operating system’s DNS lookup utility and query that hostname. For example, Windows users can run nslookup HOSTNAME in Command Prompt or PowerShell; macOS or Linux users can run dig HOSTNAME in a terminal if dig is installed. Replace HOSTNAME with the hostname copied from the current server URL.
  3. Record whether the lookup succeeds and, if shown, which DNS server answered. Do not expect a particular IP address: the reviewed YouTube guidance does not publish a fixed expected answer for this scenario, and DNS answers can vary by resolver and time.

A failed lookup establishes only that the name did not resolve through that machine’s current resolver at the time of the test. It does not identify which change, provider setting, cache, or network component is responsible. A different answer from an old cached result or third-party post is not, by itself, proof of a problem.

3. Follow the result that matches your test

What you see What it tells you Next check
The configured hostname fails DNS lookup The name is not resolving through that machine’s current resolver at test time; this does not identify the cause. Recheck the hostname against YouTube’s current Stream URL, then review the DNS change and the machine’s resolver configuration. If appropriate, investigate local or network DNS caching using guidance for your operating system and DNS provider.
The hostname resolves, but OBS times out DNS resolution alone has not restored the connection. Verify the full server URL and protocol, confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS if you selected it, and check network reachability. YouTube’s timeout guidance calls out the protocol and server: “Both the protocol and the server should be rtmps, not just rtmp.” Source.
OBS reports an SSL or certificate error The reported error calls for checking the TLS/SSL connection setup; it does not alone establish a DNS fault. Verify the exact RTMPS URL and protocol in Live Control Room. YouTube also suggests trying port 443 for an SSL error after verifying the URL. Treat that as an option for this error—not a universal fix for every offline stream. RTMPS troubleshooting.
OBS appears to send, but YouTube shows no expected preview The destination, credential setup, or ingest state may still be wrong; the symptom alone does not identify which. Recheck the current Stream URL, confirm the key in OBS without revealing it, and inspect the preview in Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance describes copying both URL and key into the encoder: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
A preview appears, but the stream is unstable The hostname is not the only possible cause of interruptions. Monitor stream health and investigate upload capacity and connection stability. YouTube advises leaving bandwidth headroom and warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream: Streaming tips.

4. Check the transport and the rest of the setup

Use the matching protocol

RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL. YouTube recommends it when supported by the encoder. Make sure the selected protocol and server match the current URL; a hostname that resolves under the wrong or outdated server configuration can still leave OBS unable to connect. If your encoder does not support RTMPS, verify the available protocol options against YouTube’s guidance rather than changing unrelated settings.

Verify the key and preview without exposing credentials

The stream key is a separate credential from the server URL. Confirm that OBS has the key for the active stream and check whether YouTube receives a preview. Do not paste the key into a public forum, screenshot, or support request unless the recipient is trusted and the channel is private. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance explains the roles of the URL and key.

Check network reliability and test before going live

If DNS resolves and the URL, protocol, and key are correct, assess whether the streaming computer can maintain a reliable connection with enough upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends testing in advance, monitoring stream health, and leaving bandwidth headroom. Its encoder settings guidance also recommends testing and monitoring. A successful DNS lookup is not a connectivity test.

5. Avoid fixes that do not match the symptom

  • Do not change ports indiscriminately. YouTube mentions port 443 as an option for an SSL error after checking the URL; it is not presented as a general DNS or offline-stream fix.
  • Do not assume a DNS change caused the outage. Timing is a clue to investigate, not proof. The actual record change, resolver, OBS settings, logs, and network context are needed to establish the cause.
  • Do not switch to HLS as a DNS repair. YouTube documents HLS for particular use cases, such as HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP; it is not a hostname-repair method. See encoder settings and protocol guidance.
  • Do not treat an IP from an old lookup as permanent. The reviewed YouTube instructions do not specify a canonical IP for the hostname, so an old or third-party address is not a dependable target.
