Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf your AWS Elemental MediaLive stream looks black on YouTube, find the first stage where the picture disappears before changing encoder settings. Check the source, MediaLive input and output, then YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. Whether audio continues, and whether the problem starts at launch or after an interruption, can help narrow the fault—but the symptom alone does not identify one cause.
Trace the picture through the signal path
Check the video in order: upstream source or encoder → MediaLive input and channel → MediaLive output → YouTube Live Control Room preview → viewer playback. Record where the first black image appears, whether audio continues, and whether the problem is constant or intermittent. This separates a source or input issue from an output-configuration or viewer-side symptom without assuming YouTube is responsible. AWS describes the source-to-input/channel-to-output workflow in its MediaLive workflow guidance.
Start at the source
Inspect the picture at the upstream encoder or source, if you can. If it is already black there, investigate that source before changing MediaLive or YouTube settings. Note whether audio is still present; audio continuing while video is black is useful evidence, but does not by itself establish the cause.
Compare the next stages
Check MediaLive’s input and channel status, then any available output preview or monitoring. Finally, compare those observations with the YouTube Live Control Room preview. The first stage that shows black is the most useful boundary for further diagnosis.

Check the MediaLive input and input-loss behavior
If the channel will not start
MediaLive probes for an input when a channel starts. If it cannot detect one, startup can fail. AWS identifies an absent input, settings that do not match the source, or a source that exceeds the channel’s specifications as possible causes. Confirm that the channel uses the intended live input and that the source is present and sending video. Then compare the configured input type and the codecs actually carried by the source with AWS’s MediaLive supported-codecs-by-input-type documentation. Codec support depends on input type, so do not check the codec in isolation.
If the channel runs but the picture turns black
Inspect input-loss and failover behavior. AWS documents this default input-loss replacement sequence: repeat the last valid frame for 1,000 milliseconds, encode black frames for 1,000 milliseconds, then show a black slate indefinitely. A black output can therefore indicate loss of usable input rather than a black image introduced by YouTube. This sequence describes the documented default; a channel with customized replacement settings may behave differently. See the MediaLive input-loss settings.

Verify the MediaLive output and YouTube ingest settings
Once the source and input are accounted for, compare the actual output configuration with YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance. YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video codecs, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR) encoding, and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds—not more than 4 seconds. Select a bitrate from YouTube’s table for the configured codec, resolution and frame rate rather than borrowing a figure from another format.
Check for an active video output
- Confirm the MediaLive output has an active video encoder; an output configured for audio only or a slate will not carry the expected picture.
- Check that output resolution and frame rate are appropriate for the detected source.
- Verify the destination and stream key in the output configuration. Do not expose the key in logs or screenshots.
- Use an encoding profile that matches the source resolution where appropriate; AWS’s example workflow illustrates that approach.
Use the matching bitrate row
For H.264, YouTube’s current live encoder table recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are recommendations for those specific codec, resolution and frame-rate combinations—not a diagnosis of a black picture. Use the corresponding row for your actual output.

Use YouTube’s preview to locate the receiver-side boundary
Before the public event, run a preflight with movement and audio representative of the planned program. YouTube advises testing before going live, checking the Live Control Room preview, and monitoring stream health and messages during delivery. If that preview is black, continue investigating the source-to-MediaLive-to-ingest path. If it is correct but a particular viewer sees black, record the event URL, device, app or browser, time, and stream-health state before treating playback as a separate issue. The available guidance does not establish a specific YouTube black-screen error code or guarantee that every playback symptom appears in stream health.
YouTube’s advice is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” See its encoder setup guidance.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you observe | Where to check next | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Black picture at the upstream source | Source or upstream encoder | Whether that stage is actually producing video; note whether audio continues. |
| MediaLive channel fails during startup | Input presence and configuration | Correct live input, matching settings, supported codec for the input type, and channel specifications. |
| Picture becomes black after an interruption | MediaLive input-loss and failover behavior | Whether usable input was lost and whether the channel uses the documented default or customized replacement settings. |
| Source and input look correct, but output is black | MediaLive output configuration | Active video encoder, resolution and frame rate, destination, and stream key. |
| YouTube preview is black | Upstream path and ingest | Compare output configuration with YouTube’s protocol, codec, CBR, keyframe and matching bitrate guidance. |
| YouTube preview is correct but one viewer sees black | That viewer’s playback context | Collect event URL, device or app/browser, time, and stream-health state; the symptom alone does not prove an ingest fault. |
