YouTube monetization has two main entry points: an earlier tier for certain fan-funding and Shopping features, and a higher threshold for ad and YouTube Premium revenue sharing. As of October 3, 2026, the main ad-revenue route requires 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the past 12 months or 10 million qualified public Shorts views in the past 90 days. Reaching a threshold does not guarantee acceptance or a particular income: YouTube reviews the channel, and different monetization features use different rules.
Which YouTube monetization threshold applies?
YouTube has an expanded YouTube Partner Program (YPP) tier and a higher tier for ad and YouTube Premium revenue sharing. The expanded tier may unlock selected features earlier in eligible regions; it does not replace the higher ad-revenue threshold. These are the thresholds shown on YouTube Help pages accessed October 3, 2026. Availability and feature requirements vary by country or region, so check the channel’s YouTube Studio Earn tab for its actual status.
| YPP access | Threshold shown by YouTube | What it can provide |
|---|---|---|
| Expanded YPP, earlier access | 500 subscribers, three valid public uploads in the last 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months or 3 million qualified public Shorts views in the last 90 days | Eligible fan-funding features and Shopping, where available; not the higher-tier ad-revenue eligibility |
| Ad and YouTube Premium revenue sharing | 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million qualified public Shorts views in the last 90 days | Eligibility to apply for Watch Page Ads, Shorts Feed Ads and YouTube Premium revenue sharing, subject to review and feature terms |
The figures above are current-page values as of October 3, 2026, not a promise of approval. See YouTube’s YPP eligibility requirements and expanded YPP details.
What counts as qualified watch time and Shorts views?
The 4,000-hour route counts eligible watch time from public long-form videos. Shorts Feed watch time does not count toward it. Watch hours from private, unlisted or deleted videos, ad campaigns, and Shorts do not count; livestream watch time is excluded when the stream is unlisted, deleted or not converted to video on demand.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The 10-million route uses qualifying views of public Shorts in the Shorts Feed. Views from private, unlisted or deleted Shorts, ad campaigns, and image posts in the Shorts Feed do not count toward the threshold. The expanded tier’s corresponding watch-hour and Shorts-view thresholds also use qualified activity, not every view or hour displayed in general analytics.
Other requirements still apply
Thresholds are only one part of eligibility. YouTube’s current YPP page also requires the creator to live in a country or region where YPP is available, have no active Community Guidelines strikes, turn on 2-Step Verification, follow channel monetization policies, and link an active AdSense for YouTube account during signup. YouTube says it may turn off monetization for channels that have not uploaded a video or posted to the Community tab for six months or more.
How to apply and what YouTube reviews
- Open YouTube Studio and select Earn to check eligibility and the features available to your channel.
- When eligible, follow the signup steps, accept the base terms, and link or set up an active AdSense for YouTube account.
- Wait for YouTube’s channel review. YouTube says automated systems and human reviewers assess the channel as a whole against its policies. Its eligibility page says review commonly takes about a month, but delays can occur.
- After acceptance, review and accept the relevant monetization modules, then enable the features you intend to use. Each feature has its own terms and eligibility.
Meeting the numbers does not automatically put a channel into YPP. Reviewers can consider the channel’s main theme, most-viewed and newest videos, the share of watch time, metadata and About section. YouTube’s channel monetization policies require original, authentic work and disallow content that is mass-produced, generic or repetitive in ways that violate the policies. Reused material and advertiser suitability can also affect monetization.
How YouTube monetization revenue is calculated
The percentages YouTube publishes apply to different revenue bases. They are not comparable rates per view, and none predicts what a specific channel will earn. The figures below are the module shares shown in YouTube Help pages accessed October 3, 2026; the individual agreements in YouTube Studio govern the creator’s terms.

| Feature | How the revenue works | Published share |
|---|---|---|
| Watch Page Ads | Ads displayed or streamed on public videos’ watch pages, including when public videos play in the YouTube Video Player on other websites or apps. Requires the Watch Page Monetization Module. | 55% of net ad revenue |
| Shorts Feed Ads | Monthly ad revenue from ads between Shorts is pooled. Music licensing affects the Creator Pool; each creator’s allocation depends on eligible engaged-view share within each country. Requires the Shorts Monetization Module. | 45% of the creator’s allocation from the Creator Pool |
| Memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers and Super Thanks | Adjacent fan-funding features for eligible partners who accept the Commerce Product Module. | 70% of net revenue from the named features |
| YouTube Premium | Another YPP revenue feature with its own eligibility and module terms; YouTube does not state a universal per-view rate in the overview. | Not stated as a universal percentage in the overview |
Watch-page ads
The 55% share applies to net ad revenue under the Watch Page Monetization Module when Watch Page Ads are enabled. It is not 55% of a fixed amount for each view: ad availability, viewer and content circumstances, and the agreement determine the revenue base. YouTube describes the terms in its partner earnings overview.
Shorts Feed ads
Shorts use a pool rather than a direct fixed payment for each Short’s ad views. YouTube aggregates Shorts Feed ad revenue monthly, accounts for music licensing when calculating the Creator Pool, then allocates the pool according to each creator’s eligible engaged-view share in each country. The creator receives 45% of that allocation. Creators must accept the Shorts Monetization Module; under YouTube’s stated rules, eligible views accrued before acceptance are not eligible for revenue sharing. See YouTube’s Shorts monetization policies.
YouTube’s own hypothetical illustration uses 100 million engaged views in a country, $100,000 in Shorts Feed ad revenue, 20% of Shorts using one music track, and a creator with 1 million engaged views. It calculates a $90,000 Creator Pool, a $900 allocation for that creator, and $405 after the 45% share. This is YouTube’s worked example, not an earnings forecast or industry benchmark.

Fan funding and Premium
Memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers and Super Thanks are not ad revenue. YouTube lists a 70% share of net revenue from these features for partners who accept the Commerce Product Module. Premium revenue is separate and governed by its feature terms. Check the agreements shown in YouTube Studio rather than assuming one share applies to every monetization feature.
Why views do not translate into guaranteed income
YouTube does not guarantee how much—or whether—a creator will be paid under the partner agreement. A view may not produce a monetized ad impression, and two channels with similar view counts can have different results. YouTube’s published shares explain how particular revenue is divided after it exists; they do not establish a universal RPM, CPM or payment per view.
Estimated revenue appears in YouTube Analytics under Revenue. Estimates can change after adjustments for invalid traffic, Content ID claims and disputes, or certain campaign types. YouTube describes adjustments after about one week and again around the middle of the following month, when finalized earnings are reflected. AdSense for YouTube is the primary payment method described in the earnings overview.
Ads can appear even when a channel earns no share
YouTube reserves the right under its Terms of Service to serve ads on content. A channel that has not met the higher YPP criteria may therefore see ads on its videos without being eligible for a share of that ad revenue. The presence of an ad is not proof that the channel is earning from it.

Policy issues that can limit monetization
- Reused or repetitive content: A channel may fail review or lose monetization if its work is not sufficiently original and authentic under YouTube’s policies. Review is channel-wide, not limited to a single video.
- Advertiser suitability: Content must meet advertiser-friendly requirements to be eligible for ads. YPP acceptance does not guarantee every upload will receive full ad monetization.
- Invalid traffic: Invalid traffic can lead to revenue adjustments. Do not use artificial views or engagement to try to qualify or increase earnings.
- Shorts eligibility: Non-original reposts or compilations without original contribution, fake views and views inconsistent with advertiser-friendly guidelines are among the ineligible examples. A Short longer than one minute that contains claimed content is blocked and not eligible for monetization under YouTube’s current Shorts policy.
Scheduled YPP changes from February 1, 2027
YouTube has announced higher entry thresholds for new creators seeking ad and YouTube Premium revenue, scheduled to take effect February 1, 2027. The announced requirement is 1,000 subscribers plus either 8,000 qualified watch hours in the previous 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in the previous 90 days. YouTube says creators already in YPP will not lose their status because of this entry-threshold update.

YouTube has also announced activity-rule updates and says certain existing module terms must be accepted in YouTube Studio by January 31, 2027; otherwise the associated monetization features stop earning from February 1. These are announced future rules, not the current thresholds as of October 3, 2026. Check YouTube’s program changes information for the applicable details before relying on them.
Keeping a monetized channel live with prerecorded video
For creators who use prerecorded programming in a continuous YouTube livestream, the stream itself does not replace YPP eligibility or guarantee ad income. A long-running stream still needs to follow YouTube policies, and livestream watch time only counts toward the watch-hour threshold if the stream is public and converted to video on demand.
