1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCompare a VPS against the stream you actually plan to send: its codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and whether the server must encode it. Then verify sustained outbound capacity and traffic limits, observe the real workload on the candidate plan, and test YouTube stream health plus recovery from interruptions. There is no universal VPS size or provider ranking established for 24/7 YouTube streaming.
Start with the stream workload, not a VPS size label
A VPS plan cannot be judged in isolation from what it must do. Before comparing plans, write down the settings and workflow you intend to run. Use the same workload for every candidate.
- Resolution and frame rate: for example, 1080p30 or 1080p60.
- Video codec and target bitrate: YouTube publishes separate recommended bitrate ranges for H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1.
- Processing mode: copying compatible pre-encoded media is different from software or hardware encoding or transcoding.
- Audio settings: include the intended audio format and bitrate in the actual test, even though the cited YouTube recommendations below concern video.
- Recording: decide whether the VPS must save a local copy; that changes storage and disk-monitoring needs.
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, CBR, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. It recommends testing before a stream and monitoring stream health while live. These are ingest and encoder settings—not a certification of any VPS plan. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Use YouTube’s bitrate ranges as workload inputs
| H.264 stream | YouTube-recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3–8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3–8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5–14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6–17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not measurements of VPS performance or guarantees that a host can sustain a particular bitrate. YouTube gives different recommendations for H.265/HEVC and AV1; consult its current table for the codec you will actually use rather than applying H.264 figures to another codec. The Help page does not state a publication year.

Compare the plan on the dimensions that affect a continuous stream
Encoding capacity
If the VPS must encode or transcode, compare its published vCPU allocation and observe CPU behavior while running the intended job. A plan’s vCPU count alone does not prove sustained encoding performance. Resolution by itself is not enough to infer a reliable CPU or RAM requirement: codec, frame rate, encoder settings, and whether encoding is required all affect the workload. If the workflow copies compatible media without re-encoding, test that exact copy path instead of using an encode benchmark as a proxy.
Outbound network and traffic allowance
The VPS must send a continuous stream to YouTube. Compare the plan’s sustained outbound capacity, included traffic allowance, billing-period rules, and any network restrictions with the configured bitrate. Check egress terms with the host; an advertised port speed is not, by itself, evidence of sustained throughput. A continuous stream consumes continuing outbound traffic, so calculate the expected transfer for the period you are buying and verify how the provider counts it. The available evidence does not establish a universal safety margin or a provider with the best network.

Reliability and recovery
Read the provider’s reliability terms, but evaluate the streaming process separately from the hosting service. An encoder can fail while the VPS remains reachable; a provider interruption can affect a healthy process. Check whether your workflow supervises the encoder, reports failures, restarts it when appropriate, and reconnects to YouTube after an interruption. Test those behaviors rather than assuming a running server means the stream is healthy.
Monitoring and storage
For a meaningful comparison, check that you can observe host CPU and memory, encoder or process errors, outbound-network behavior, and disk use if the VPS records locally. Also check YouTube’s own stream-health feedback: server metrics and YouTube ingest status reveal different failure modes. If recording is enabled, include storage capacity and disk monitoring in the comparison; if you are not recording, local storage is not a primary stream-performance measure.

Calculate whether the traffic allowance fits
For an approximate video-only transfer calculation, multiply the configured bitrate in megabits per second by the streaming hours, then divide by eight to convert megabits to megabytes. For example, a constant 6 Mbps video stream for 24 hours sends about 64,800 MB (64.8 GB in decimal units) of video data before audio, protocol overhead, reconnects, or provider-specific accounting. This is an estimate, not a provider billing figure. Add the audio stream and verify the final allowance calculation and egress policy with the host.
Use the candidate plan’s actual billing period and intended operating schedule. If the provider charges for excess transfer, throttles traffic, or applies regional network restrictions, include those terms in the cost comparison rather than treating the advertised port speed as the whole network offer.

Run a like-for-like test before relying on a VPS
- Fix the workload. Record resolution, frame rate, codec, target bitrate, copy versus encode/transcode mode, and whether local recording is enabled.
- Check the plan terms. Confirm the vCPU allocation, sustained egress terms, included outbound traffic, restrictions, region, storage if needed, and total cost directly with the provider. Terms and prices change.
- Run the real media path. On the candidate VPS, use the intended input and settings. Observe CPU, memory, output errors, outbound network behavior, and dropped or late output. A representative test is more useful than a plan label or a test using a different encode path.
- Send an appropriate test stream. Use the actual YouTube ingest configuration and a private, unlisted, or otherwise suitable test setup. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring; review its stream-health feedback during the test.
- Test interruption and recovery. Check what happens when the encoder process stops or the connection is interrupted: whether monitoring detects it, the process restarts as intended, and the stream reconnects. Google’s Live Streaming API documents primary and backup ingestion information and health-related fields, but those fields are not a VPS-provider uptime guarantee: LiveStreams | YouTube Live Streaming API.
- Compare the whole operating cost. Include the current plan price and transfer terms, plus any recording storage, backups, monitoring, and maintenance you need. No current provider plans have been independently benchmarked here under the same 24/7 workload, so do not treat this method as a ranking.
Use RTMPS and check the actual ingest configuration
YouTube recommends RTMPS, describing it as RTMP sent through an SSL connection. Configure the ingest protocol and stream settings in the encoder and YouTube setup you will actually use; do not assume that a successful connection to a server proves the ingest is healthy. Google’s API reference describes primary and backup ingestion information, but backup ingest configuration should not be confused with automatic VPS failover or a guarantee that a provider will keep your process running. Read Google’s RTMPS ingestion guidance alongside the health feedback shown for your stream.
Common comparison mistakes
- Choosing by vCPU count alone: test the actual encode or copy workflow and observe sustained behavior.
- Equating port speed with usable continuous egress: check traffic allowance, restrictions, and observed stability from the intended region.
- Testing a different workload: use the same media path, codec, frame rate, bitrate, and recording behavior planned for production.
- Monitoring only the VPS: combine host and process monitoring with YouTube stream-health feedback.
- Assuming recovery: deliberately test restart and reconnection behavior before depending on the stream.
- Trusting an unverified provider ranking: no controlled, like-for-like provider benchmark is established here; compare candidates with the same test and current terms.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not maintain a VPS and encoder process, StreamNeo is a managed YouTube-only option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Each slot streams what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free first day.
