How to Run a 24/7 YouTube Live Stream on a DigitalOcean Droplet with OBS

YouTube’s encoder and bandwidth guidance can help prepare an OBS broadcast on a DigitalOcean Droplet, but it does not provide a verified headless 24/7 deployment or automatic recovery recipe.

You can prepare a YouTube broadcast in Live Control Room, send it from OBS on a DigitalOcean Linux Droplet, and monitor YouTube’s stream health—but the available official guidance does not establish a tested recipe for running OBS without a desktop session or recovering it automatically after a failure. Treat those as separate deployment problems, not guaranteed parts of this setup. If you need an always-on YouTube stream without maintaining a computer or OBS process, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud; details are below.

What you need to confirm before setting up the stream

  • YouTube eligibility: YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance says the channel must be verified, must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16.
  • A YouTube live stream: Create or select the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room before configuring OBS. You will need the current stream URL and stream key.
  • A Linux Droplet: DigitalOcean Droplets are Linux-based virtual machines. The documentation covered here does not establish a Droplet size proven adequate for OBS encoding, so do not treat any particular configuration as validated for this workload.
  • A plan for running OBS: OBS is commonly used as a desktop encoder, but the material available here does not verify how to install and run it headlessly on a Droplet, keep it alive after logout, or restart it after a crash. The YouTube and DigitalOcean requirements below are useful setup constraints, not a tested end-to-end 24/7 deployment guide.

Prepare the YouTube broadcast and protect its stream key

  1. Verify that the channel meets YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements and has no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days.
  2. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the broadcast you intend OBS to send. Use the stream URL and stream key shown for that broadcast; do not reuse an old key without checking that it is still the one assigned to the selected stream.
  3. Keep the stream key private. YouTube treats it as the encoder’s password and address. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a broadcast to your channel. If you believe it has been exposed, reset it in YouTube and update the encoder with the replacement.
  4. Prefer RTMPS, YouTube’s encrypted version of RTMP, for transport. Use OBS’s YouTube RTMPS preset if available; otherwise obtain the current RTMPS URL from Live Control Room rather than guessing an endpoint.

Choose encoder settings for the output you intend to broadcast

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Its recommended bitrates vary by resolution and frame rate. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a specific Droplet or network connection can sustain them.

Setting YouTube guidance
Transport RTMP or RTMPS; RTMPS is recommended for encrypted transport.
Video codec H.264.
Rate control CBR (constant bitrate).
Keyframe interval Two seconds recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
H.264 video bitrate, 240p–720p at 30 fps 4 Mbps recommended.
H.264 video bitrate, 720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps recommended.
H.264 video bitrate, 1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps recommended.
H.264 video bitrate, 1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps recommended.
Stereo audio 128 kbps at 44.1 kHz recommended.

The listed bitrate figures are not a complete resolution-and-frame-rate chart. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance for the recommended value for any other output you plan to use. Match the OBS output to the broadcast you actually want; increasing resolution or frame rate can raise the required upload capacity and data transfer.

Connect OBS and test the broadcast before relying on it

  1. Configure OBS to send to YouTube using the current stream URL and stream key for the broadcast in Live Control Room. If OBS offers a YouTube RTMPS preset, use it; otherwise choose the RTMPS endpoint provided by YouTube.
  2. Set the video codec, rate control, keyframe interval, video bitrate, and stereo audio settings to the intended output, using the recommendations above as a starting point.
  3. Start a test broadcast with representative motion and audio. Check the YouTube preview and stream-health messages before treating the setup as ready.
  4. Keep observing stream health while testing. YouTube warns that network interruptions can break a stream; a successful preview at one moment does not prove uninterrupted operation.

Allow upload headroom and estimate outbound transfer

YouTube advises keeping total streaming bitrate below available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% of that capacity unused. In practical terms, a stream configured at a given bitrate needs more upload capacity than that bitrate alone: the connection must have room for variation and other traffic. A Droplet’s nominal network capacity should not be treated as proof that an OBS session can maintain the target stream rate.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Continuous streaming also uses substantial outbound data. As a rough video-only calculation, a constant 10 Mbps stream for 30 days sends about 3.24 TB (approximately 3,019 GiB) before protocol overhead; audio and other traffic add to the total. Actual transfer depends on the bitrate that is sent and how long it runs.

Budget for both the Droplet and bandwidth

DigitalOcean’s costs have two relevant parts: the Droplet configuration you choose and any outbound transfer beyond the team’s included allowance. DigitalOcean pools included Droplet outbound transfer across the team, rather than granting a separate independent allowance to every machine. Its bandwidth documentation lists excess outbound transfer at $0.01 per GiB; inbound transfer is free. The rate and Droplet pricing are subject to change, so check current terms before estimating a bill.

Bundled CPU Droplets continue accruing charges while powered off because the compute resources remain reserved. Billing ends when the Droplet is destroyed. Powering a machine off is therefore not the same as deleting it, and destroying it is not a substitute for arranging stream recovery.

There is no responsible single monthly total without the selected Droplet plan, actual bitrate and uptime, and the team’s total outbound transfer consumption. Estimate your stream’s data from its bitrate and runtime, compare it with the team’s pooled allowance, and then check the current Droplet and bandwidth prices.

What this setup does not establish about 24/7 reliability

A 24/7 broadcast needs more than a correct stream key and encoder bitrate: OBS must run continuously, the host must remain available, and failures must be detected and handled. The available YouTube and DigitalOcean guidance does not establish exact current steps for running OBS without a conventional desktop session, supervising its process, or automatically recovering after OBS, the Droplet, or the network fails. No particular headless installation, service configuration, restart command, or unattended uptime claim is verified here. Do not assume that closing a desktop session or restarting the virtual machine will preserve or resume the broadcast.

For a production channel, separately validate how your chosen OBS deployment behaves when the session ends, the process exits, the Droplet reboots, or YouTube disconnects it. Verify recovery rather than assuming it. Also confirm that the stream’s video and audio are yours to broadcast or that you have the necessary rights, and review YouTube’s rules for copyrighted and reused content before scheduling a continuous loop.

Troubleshoot the likely failure points

  • YouTube does not accept the encoder connection: Check that the selected Live Control Room broadcast and OBS configuration use the same current stream URL and key. If the key may have been exposed or is no longer current, reset it in YouTube and update OBS.
  • The stream health is poor or the broadcast disconnects: Compare the total configured bitrate with the Droplet’s available upload capacity and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and test again with representative audio and motion. Network interruption can break the stream.
  • The broadcast stops after you leave the machine: Do not infer that OBS is running headlessly or being supervised. The documentation covered here does not verify the desktop-session, process-supervision, or restart setup needed to diagnose this. Confirm your deployment’s behavior directly before relying on it unattended.
  • The bill is higher than expected: Check both the Droplet’s billing status and team-wide outbound transfer. Powered-off bundled CPU Droplets still incur compute charges, and transfer beyond the pooled allowance is billed separately.
  • The stream contains material that could trigger a copyright issue: Stop and check the rights for every video and audio element in the loop. A live encoder connection does not grant permission to rebroadcast content.
