Recording and streaming together can expose a performance limit, but the symptom alone does not identify which one.
Reproduce the issue with the same game, scene, resolution, frame rate, encoder, and recording setup, then use the counter and OBS log to choose the fix. Don’t lower quality or buy hardware until you know which failure you’re addressing.
Identify which OBS frame counter is increasing
Open OBS’s Statistics panel while reproducing the problem. The distinction matters: network drops, rendering lag, and encoding lag have different causes and remedies. OBS recommends including a log when requesting support; the log can add context to what you see in Statistics.

These counters describe OBS’s side of the stream. Viewer buffering alone does not prove OBS is dropping frames: a viewer’s connection, device, or location can also cause playback problems. Check OBS before changing encoder settings.

If OBS reports dropped frames
Test the network path and upload headroom
The OBS Project says dropped frames mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the set bitrate. Run a short test and, if practical, try a different streaming server; testing another service can also help determine whether the issue is specific to a destination. Change one variable at a time so you can tell whether the result improves.
Lower the stream bitrate if your stable upload capacity cannot sustain it. OBS’s connection guide offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for diagnosis, not a guarantee of stability and not a YouTube-specific recommendation. The guide also advises respecting the streaming service’s bitrate limits. The exact YouTube ingest and bitrate settings are not established here, so check YouTube’s current official live-control-room guidance rather than borrowing settings from another service.

Check Wi-Fi, network software, and equipment
The OBS Project recommends a wired connection for streaming. If you are on Wi-Fi, test Ethernet where practical; this is particularly useful when the wireless connection is unstable. Also check for VPNs, security software, network-optimization utilities, outdated network drivers, or a faulty modem, router, cable, network card, switch, or extender. If those checks do not resolve the problem, OBS advises contacting your internet service provider.
OBS documents Windows-only network optimizations and TCP pacing as options some users report can help. Dynamic bitrate can reduce the bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, but OBS cautions that it does not fix the underlying network problem and may reduce video quality. If changing the IP family makes no difference, return it to the default.

If rendering or encoding lag increases
Reduce game and scene workload first
OBS needs GPU time and resources to composite and render a scene. A demanding game, other GPU-heavy applications, high output resolution or frame rate, complex scenes, filters, and browser sources can all add pressure. Try the following in a short test:
- Cap the game’s frame rate or enable V-Sync, and lower demanding game graphics settings.
- Close or reduce other applications using the GPU.
- Simplify OBS scenes and scene collections; remove or reduce demanding filters and browser sources.
- Use source media at no higher resolution than you need.
- Lower OBS output resolution or frame rate if the system still cannot keep up. OBS specifically suggests trying 30 fps when 60 fps is not working.
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator for certain GPU-overload issues, as suggested in OBS’s performance guide.
These steps reduce system demand, but may cost image detail, motion smoothness, or production effects. Test with the actual game and scene you plan to use: an idle desktop test may not reproduce the load that causes trouble live.

Separate streaming and recording demands
In OBS Advanced Output mode, streaming and recording can be configured separately. If encoding lag appears only when both are active, compare their encoders and quality settings. For recording, OBS’s overview suggests using a hardware encoder when available if the recording encoder is set to a preset other than “Same as stream.” That can move encoding work off the CPU, but it will not fix network drops and may not resolve GPU rendering overload.
Recording quality settings are not YouTube streaming recommendations. OBS’s 2023 Advanced Recording Settings Guide lists these local recording baselines:

These ranges are recording starting points from that guide, not a universal recipe. Use the encoder-specific presets and settings appropriate to your OBS version, hardware, and recording workflow.

Hardware purchases only make sense when the diagnosis supports them. OBS says hardware encoders generally reduce CPU workload by using a specialized component. Its documentation identifies NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel Quick Sync Video, and Apple VideoToolbox, with platform and hardware-generation qualifications. Check that your computer and OBS version support the encoder. Older hardware encoder generations may produce lower image quality at the same bitrate than x264’s veryfast preset, so compatibility and output quality matter.
- Consider a GPU with a supported hardware video encoder only if the evidence points to encoding strain and your current hardware lacks a suitable encoder or cannot keep up.
- Consider an Ethernet cable only if your connection diagnosis suggests Wi-Fi instability or faulty cable hardware. It does not address rendering or encoding overload.
OBS notes that 60-fps streaming can be more taxing than 30 fps and advises testing system resources before going live. Avoid treating a hardware upgrade as the default solution to every frame problem.
Keep a test log and troubleshoot one change at a time
- Reproduce the issue briefly with your normal game, scene, output resolution, frame rate, encoder, and recording settings.
- Note which OBS Statistics counter rises and whether OBS reports an encoding overload.
- Save the OBS log from the test. If you ask for help, provide the log along with the specific counter and the changes you tested.
- For network drops, change a network or bitrate variable; for rendering or encoding lag, reduce workload or adjust the relevant output. Repeat the same test after each change.
- Once the counters remain stable during a representative test, verify again under the gameplay and scene load you expect during the live stream.
