AWS Elemental MediaLive vs Ant Media Server for Looping Videos on YouTube

MediaLive explicitly documents looping a file input; Ant Media documents VoD playlists and YouTube restreaming, but its cited guide does not establish endless repeat.

For a prerecorded file that must repeat continuously, AWS Elemental MediaLive has the clearer documented behavior: set the file input’s source end behavior to LOOP, and MediaLive ingests the file again from the beginning when it ends. Ant Media Server documents playlists of prerecorded videos and YouTube restreaming, but its cited version 3.1 playlist guide does not establish that a playlist repeats endlessly. If infinite replay is essential, verify repeat behavior for the exact Ant Media version and edition before choosing it.

Neither product’s looping feature alone completes the YouTube setup. You also need an output or restream destination configured with the server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room.

Which one fits a continuously looping YouTube stream?

Choose based on the behavior you need documented, not just the product category. MediaLive’s user guide explicitly describes repeating a file input at end of file. Ant Media’s version 3.1 documentation describes creating linear live streams from prerecorded VoD playlists and restreaming to YouTube, but the cited playlist guide does not say that playback loops forever.

  • Choose MediaLive when explicit file-input repetition is the deciding requirement and you are prepared to configure the rest of the cloud encoding and YouTube delivery workflow.
  • Consider Ant Media when you want a server product with VoD playlists and social-platform restreaming, and can confirm that the exact version and edition meets your repeat requirement.
  • Consider StreamNeo first for a simpler YouTube-only service: it keeps uploaded videos looping from the cloud, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free. See StreamNeo.

MediaLive’s documented LOOP setting establishes repetition of the source file; it does not by itself establish a complete YouTube architecture. Ant Media’s playlist and restream features likewise should not be treated as proof of infinite repeat.

How the documented workflows differ

Decision AWS Elemental MediaLive Ant Media Server
Prerecorded input The user guide describes a VOD/file input and a source end behavior setting. With it set to LOOP, MediaLive starts ingesting the file from the beginning after it ends. AWS MediaLive User Guide. Version 3.1 documentation describes making playlists from uploaded or accessible MP4 VoD files and linear live streaming of prerecorded material. The cited guide does not establish endless replay. Ant Media playlist guide.
YouTube delivery YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. RTMPS is available when the encoder supports it. YouTube encoder guide; YouTube RTMPS guide. Ant Media documents adding a YouTube RTMP destination to a stream. Its guide warns that YouTube does not accept a stream without audio. Ant Media RTMP restreaming guide.
Operational model AWS describes MediaLive as a managed cloud live video encoding service. The chosen output and delivery architecture still need to be planned. AWS MediaLive overview. Ant Media Server is a server product with licensing and deployment choices. A hosted setup also requires budgeting for compute and other infrastructure. Ant Media pricing.
Cost basis Charges depend on running inputs, outputs and add-on features; configuration and region affect the rate. AWS MediaLive pricing; AWS pricing guide. The pricing page lists license options, but a license is not the entire cost of a hosted deployment: include the underlying instance and other deployment costs. Ant Media pricing.

What to check before choosing

If you choose MediaLive

  1. Confirm that your source is being configured as a file/VOD input and set its source end behavior to LOOP. AWS documents this as restarting ingestion from the beginning when the file ends. See the MediaLive User Guide.
  2. Plan and configure the output and delivery path separately; the input loop does not supply the YouTube destination automatically.
  3. In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key, then enter them in the encoder or delivery configuration as applicable. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
  4. Use the RTMPS endpoint when your encoder supports it, following YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.

If you choose Ant Media Server

  1. Check the version and edition you plan to deploy against the playlist documentation. The version 3.1 page supports prerecorded MP4 VoD playlists, but does not establish endless automatic repeat.
  2. Before committing to a 24/7 single-file loop, ask Ant Media or test the exact deployment’s end-of-playlist behavior. Do not assume a playlist automatically restarts because it can be scheduled or streamed linearly.
  3. Configure the YouTube RTMP destination as described in the RTMP restreaming guide. Include audio; the guide warns that YouTube does not accept a stream without it.
  4. Provide the YouTube server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Prefer RTMPS if the relevant encoder path supports it.

Compare the real operating cost, not a headline price

MediaLive’s cost depends on the inputs, outputs, add-on features and configuration that remain running. Compare the actual region, codec, resolution, frame rate, output count and uptime using the MediaLive pricing page and pricing guide.

AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS deployment guide gives an example estimate of $69.74 for a one-hour event. That scenario assumes approximately 1,000 viewers, a one-hour SD-540p event, US East (N. Virginia), standard pricing, and includes $1.99 for MediaLive plus packaging and distribution. It is an example for that event scenario, not a quote for a 24/7 YouTube stream or a universal current rate. See AWS’s deployment estimate and assumptions.
