First restore the computer’s internet connection and let Wirecast attempt to reconnect. Telestream’s version history documents that Wirecast automatically reconnects after internet service returns, but that note is version-specific—not a guarantee that every Wirecast build will resume every YouTube event. Check the installed version and verify the stream’s status in YouTube Live Control Room before assuming the broadcast is back.
Recover the stream in the right order
- Restore and verify internet access. Confirm the computer can reach the internet. If the connection is back but Wirecast still cannot send a stable feed, check available upload capacity and system CPU. Telestream recommends reducing the stream data rate, frame rate, or frame size when upload capacity is insufficient; high CPU can also contribute to dropped frames, termination, or exceptions. Telestream’s Wirecast support guidance covers these checks.
- Check Wirecast’s output state and installed version. Telestream’s version history says Wirecast will automatically reconnect after internet service is restored following an internet-loss hang. The retrieved history does not identify the release heading for that entry, so do not assume a specific version number. If output remains down, check the version history and contact Telestream support with Wirecast’s support information. Wirecast version history
- Check the event in YouTube Live Control Room. Review the stream status and health to see whether YouTube is receiving the encoder feed. If a third-party encoder reports an error while starting, YouTube advises checking the stream key and updating the encoder with the key shown in Live Control Room. That is a start-error remedy, not a general fix for an interruption caused by lost internet. YouTube live-stream troubleshooting
- Determine whether the feed or event lifecycle is the problem. A recovered encoder feed and a started YouTube event are separate states. YouTube’s Auto-start and Auto-stop settings control whether an encoder can start or stop an event; YouTube does not describe them as network-reconnect controls. For a scheduled stream, follow the encoder workflow and, when required, wait for the preview before clicking Go live. YouTube stream settings · YouTube encoder setup
- If the encoder feed looks healthy but viewers still have trouble, investigate the network path. YouTube recommends checking encoder output, CPU load, a local recording, and the outbound internet connection. If the problem persists, contact your internet provider or report it to YouTube through its troubleshooting guidance.
Know what YouTube’s start controls do
Auto-start and Auto-stop govern whether an encoder can start or stop the YouTube event. They do not make a dropped connection recover, and enabling them is not a substitute for restoring internet access or checking Wirecast output. YouTube’s settings page describes these controls and the scheduled-stream workflow: Stream settings in YouTube Live Control Room.
A stream key is the credential Wirecast uses to send video to YouTube. Update or reset it when resolving an encoder start error or addressing a compromised key. Do not reset it reflexively after every mid-stream connection interruption: a key change does not restore a broken network connection.
When one encoder is not enough
Wirecast reconnecting after internet service returns is a single-encoder recovery path. A backup encoder is a separate resilience setup and must be configured and tested in advance. YouTube recommends testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then confirming that the player rolls over to the backup. That advice applies only when a backup encoder is actually in place. YouTube also recommends monitoring the stream and stopping the encoder after the event has stopped on YouTube. Troubleshoot common recovery failures
| What you see | What to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Wirecast does not resume after internet service returns | Confirm internet access is working, inspect Wirecast output, and check whether the installed version includes Telestream’s documented reconnect behavior. | Allow Wirecast to reconnect after service returns; if output stays down, consult Telestream support with the application’s support information. The version-history note does not establish that every release resumes every event. |
| Wirecast reports an error when starting the stream | Check the stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room and confirm the encoder uses the current key. | Update the encoder with the key from Live Control Room. Treat this as a start-error step, not a generic network-drop fix. |
| The encoder is sending, but the YouTube event is not live | Check the event’s start state, its Auto-start and Auto-stop settings, and whether the scheduled-stream workflow requires a preview and a manual Go live action. | Use the appropriate YouTube event controls; do not confuse event start/stop settings with encoder reconnection. |
| Dropped frames or a terminated output | Check upload capacity and CPU load. | If upload capacity is inadequate, reduce data rate, frame rate, or frame size. Telestream’s guidance identifies CPU load as another possible contributor; it does not support relying on one universal CPU threshold. |
| Feed appears healthy but viewers report a problem | Inspect encoder output, CPU, local archive, and outbound internet connection. | Follow YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance; contact your internet provider or report the issue to YouTube if it persists. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube.
