AWS Elemental MediaLive can loop a single S3-backed MP4 or TS file indefinitely and send its output to YouTube through an RTMP workflow. For multiple files, MediaLive supports scheduled switching between dynamic file inputs; the AWS documentation cited here does not establish that a multi-file schedule automatically repeats as a playlist forever.
What MediaLive can do
- Read files from S3: MediaLive supports MP4 files in Amazon S3 and TS files with
.tsor.m2tsextensions. AWS classifies these as video-on-demand file sources, not live sources. See MediaLive input types and protocols and live and file sources. - Repeat one file: MediaLive’s API describes the file-input end behavior as “Loop input if it is a file. This allows a file input to be streamed indefinitely.” See Channels in the MediaLive API Reference.
- Send an output toward YouTube: MediaLive supports RTMP output, and its workflow wizard lists YouTube as a destination. You still need the current ingest details from your YouTube live workflow. See MediaLive output protocols and downstream systems and About the workflow wizard.
Set up a single S3 video to loop
- Prepare the source file in S3. Use a supported MP4 or TS file. For an MP4 input, AWS documents the URI form
s3ssl://<bucket>/<path>/<filename>.mp4. MediaLive bucket names cannot use dot notation. See AWS guidance for obtaining MP4 input information. - Create a MediaLive file input. Point it at the S3 object using the format and location required for the file type. This is a VOD file input rather than a live contribution feed.
- Set the file end behavior to loop. Configure the input’s source end behavior so the file loops. MediaLive’s API documents this behavior as allowing a file input to stream indefinitely; consult the current console or API reference for the exact configuration field in your workflow.
- Configure the channel’s output as RTMP. Use the current ingest information shown in YouTube Studio for the live workflow you are setting up. The AWS documentation establishes RTMP output and names YouTube as a wizard destination, but the pages cited here do not provide YouTube’s current ingest URL, stream-key handling, account eligibility, or exact wizard steps.
- Start the channel and verify the YouTube live preview. Confirm that YouTube receives the feed before relying on it as a continuous broadcast. The source documentation establishes file looping and the output path, not a guarantee about your account’s eligibility or the behavior of every configuration.
Use multiple S3 videos in sequence
If you want different files rather than one repeated file, configure supported S3 MP4 or TS files as dynamic inputs and use the MediaLive channel schedule to switch between them. AWS documents scheduled switching among dynamic file inputs in its dynamic inputs guide.
Switching between files is not the same as looping a playlist. The cited AWS documentation establishes that a schedule can switch among dynamic inputs, but it does not establish that a multi-file schedule automatically cycles through the playlist forever. Plan and validate the schedule around that distinction.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is simply to keep uploaded videos running on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo is an alternative: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It runs from the cloud, so nothing has to stay powered on at home; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly plan is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
