How to Send an FFmpeg Playlist to AWS Elemental MediaPackage for YouTube Live

MediaPackage packages upstream streams for downstream playback; send an FFmpeg playlist directly to YouTube's configured ingest URL, and use a separate feed if you also need MediaPackage.

You generally cannot send an AWS Elemental MediaPackage playback endpoint to YouTube as an encoder destination. MediaPackage receives an upstream live stream and packages it for downstream playback; YouTube Live expects an encoder to send directly to the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. For a playlist source, use FFmpeg as the encoder and send its output to YouTube. If you need MediaPackage too, plan a separate feed to it rather than treating its playback endpoint as a relay to YouTube.

Why a MediaPackage endpoint is not the YouTube destination

AWS describes MediaPackage as receiving a live stream from an upstream encoder, then making packaged output available to downstream devices or a CDN. As the AWS Elemental MediaPackage User Guide puts it, “A downstream device requests content from MediaPackage through the endpoint output URL.” That output URL is for playback requests, not a documented push destination for YouTube Live. See the AWS Elemental MediaPackage overview.

YouTube’s encoder workflow goes the other direction: configure an encoder with the server URL and stream key for the YouTube Live stream. The reviewed vendor documentation does not establish a direct MediaPackage-to-YouTube relay. Keep MediaPackage’s input URL and playback endpoint distinct, and do not paste a MediaPackage endpoint into YouTube or use it as FFmpeg’s YouTube ingest URL.

Choose the correct path for your setup

Goal What to send where Important distinction
Play an FFmpeg playlist on YouTube Live FFmpeg sends to the current YouTube ingest URL using the stream key shown in Live Control Room. MediaPackage is not required for this route.
Package a live feed with MediaPackage An upstream encoder sends a live content stream to MediaPackage; a player or CDN requests packaged content from a MediaPackage endpoint. The endpoint is downstream playback access, not a documented YouTube ingest destination.
Send the same production to MediaPackage and YouTube Plan distinct encoder outputs or feeds for the two destinations, or use an appropriate distribution system. This is an architectural recommendation based on the documented ingest and egress roles; it is not a vendor-verified MediaPackage-to-YouTube integration.

AWS has documentation for both MediaPackage and MediaPackage v2. The core ingest-versus-playback distinction is consistent, but exact console or API steps depend on the version, account, and AWS Region you use. See the MediaPackage v2 overview.

Set up FFmpeg to send a playlist to YouTube

The exact FFmpeg playlist command depends on your input files, playlist format, chosen protocol, and FFmpeg build. The official destination documentation establishes the YouTube ingest settings and HLS output requirements; it does not verify one universal playlist demuxer command. Treat FFmpeg syntax as build- and input-specific, and test the actual playlist rather than assuming a sample command will work unchanged.

  1. Create or select the YouTube live stream. Open YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the event, and choose the ingest protocol supported by your workflow. Use the current server URL and stream key shown for that stream; do not reuse credentials from another event. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe entering those values in the encoder.
  2. Choose RTMPS or HLS in YouTube and FFmpeg. YouTube recommends RTMPS for the standard RTMP encoder path. Use the current RTMPS server URL provided in Live Control Room with the matching stream key. HLS is a separate ingest choice; select HLS in the stream configuration and use YouTube’s HLS ingest URL and requirements, not a MediaPackage playback URL.
  3. Configure FFmpeg to read the playlist and encode or pass through appropriately. Confirm that FFmpeg can read the playlist and all referenced files, that their paths remain accessible for the full stream, and that the output container, codecs, and protocol match the selected YouTube ingest method. The sources cited here do not supply a tested command for every playlist type or FFmpeg build, so verify the command against your local FFmpeg documentation and a test stream.
  4. Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: keep it out of public scripts, shared logs, screenshots, and examples. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on it again.
  5. Start the encoder and check preview and stream health. For a scheduled stream, wait for the encoder preview in Live Control Room and select Go live when ready. Before the event, verify both audible sound and moving video, then monitor YouTube’s stream health during transmission. YouTube’s live encoder settings provide protocol and stream setup guidance.

RTMPS and HLS: which YouTube ingest option fits?

Option When it fits Requirements to account for Tradeoff
RTMPS Standard encoder ingest when the workflow supports it. Use the current YouTube server URL and corresponding stream key from Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Continuous-stream ingest; confirm the encoder output matches the selected stream configuration.
HLS When YouTube HLS ingest is selected, including workflows needing HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP, subject to YouTube’s support. YouTube specifies TS segments of 1–4 seconds; a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments; HTTPS POST or PUT; no byte ranges; and no encryption other than HTTPS. Segment-based delivery has higher latency than RTMP and imposes stricter playlist constraints.

These are YouTube ingest choices, not methods for turning a MediaPackage playback endpoint into an encoder destination. For the HLS rules and latency distinction, see YouTube’s HLS live streaming requirements. The 1–4 second segment length and five-segment limit are operational configuration requirements published by YouTube Help, not performance targets.

If MediaPackage also belongs in the production

  1. Configure an upstream encoder to send a live content stream to the appropriate MediaPackage input for your product version and Region.
  2. Use the MediaPackage endpoint URL for downstream playback or CDN access, according to your packaging setup.
  3. If YouTube also needs the program, provide it a separate feed from the encoder or an appropriate distribution system, configured with YouTube’s own current ingest URL and stream key.

This split respects the documented roles of the services. The available AWS and YouTube documentation does not verify that MediaPackage forwards its output directly to YouTube Live.

Troubleshooting a playlist stream

  • YouTube does not receive video: Check that FFmpeg is sending to the current YouTube server URL and that the stream key belongs to the selected Live Control Room event. Confirm that FFmpeg’s output protocol matches the protocol selected for that stream.
  • You pasted a MediaPackage URL into YouTube: Replace it with YouTube’s encoder destination. A MediaPackage endpoint serves downstream playback requests; it is not a documented YouTube push destination.
  • HLS ingest is rejected or unstable: Check for TS segments 1–4 seconds long, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, no byte ranges, and no encryption beyond HTTPS. Also confirm HLS was selected for the YouTube stream.
  • There is more latency than expected: HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream. If your workflow supports it and lower latency is important, consider YouTube’s recommended RTMPS path.
  • The preview has picture but no sound, or the video is frozen: Test audio and moving video before the event, inspect the playlist and its referenced files, and check YouTube stream health while the encoder is running.
  • FFmpeg cannot open playlist items: Check playlist syntax for your demuxer, file paths, permissions, and whether every referenced file is accessible to the FFmpeg process. Exact behavior depends on playlist format and FFmpeg build.
  • The stream key may have leaked: Reset or replace it in Live Control Room and update the encoder configuration. Do not publish the new key in logs or examples.
