AWS Elemental MediaLive Input Specification for Looping 1080p YouTube Videos

AWS Elemental MediaLive can loop a supported file input with sourceEndBehavior set to LOOP. Here are the file options, YouTube’s 1080p encoding recommendations, and the protocol checks to make before going live.

To loop a video file in AWS Elemental MediaLive, use a file input and set InputSettings.sourceEndBehavior to LOOP. MediaLive documents MP4 files pulled from Amazon S3 or an HTTP(S) server. For a 1080p H.264 YouTube Live stream, YouTube’s current guidance recommends 14 Mbps at 30 fps or 17 Mbps at 60 fps, with CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. The input loop is documented; a compatible MediaLive-to-YouTube output path still needs to be confirmed for your chosen channel configuration.

How to loop a video in AWS Elemental MediaLive

MediaLive’s file-input setting controls what happens when the source file reaches its end. In the input settings, set sourceEndBehavior to LOOP. AWS describes this as: “Loop input if it is a file. This allows a file input to be streamed indefinitely.” See the MediaLive InputSettings API reference.

This setting loops the file input; it does not by itself configure a complete YouTube channel, output encoder, ingest protocol, or live schedule. Specify those separately in the MediaLive channel configuration.

Choose a supported file source

MediaLive supports MP4 files pulled from Amazon S3 or an HTTP(S) server. It also supports static TS or M2TS files from those locations. AWS says growing TS files written while they are in use are unsupported. See AWS MediaLive supported input formats.

Set the end behavior

For a file input, configure InputSettings.sourceEndBehavior as LOOP. AWS documents indefinite looping for file inputs. Confirm that the actual file is reachable by MediaLive and that the channel’s input and output settings are valid before starting it.

Specify the 1080p output profile

“1080p” identifies a resolution, not a complete encoding profile. MediaLive’s API classifies HD as 720 through 1080 vertical lines; that classification does not prescribe the source frame rate, codec, bitrate, audio, or output protocol. Set those according to the file and the intended YouTube output.

H.264 video bitrate by frame rate

YouTube Help’s H.264 recommendations, current guidance accessed in 2026, are:

Output resolution and frame rate Recommended video bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps

Use the row matching the output frame rate; do not treat these as interchangeable settings. YouTube also recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, its recommendation is 128 Kbps at a 44.1 kHz sample rate. These are YouTube recommendations, not a tested AWS MediaLive preset. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings and select values supported by your MediaLive channel.

Input and output details to settle

  • Source frame rate and whether the output should be 30 or 60 fps.
  • Input codec, bitrate, resolution, and whether the audio track and codec are present.
  • Output codec and bitrate. YouTube’s general live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1; the bitrate figures above are specifically for H.264.
  • Output group and ingest protocol, which must be compatible with the selected MediaLive channel and YouTube ingest endpoint.

Can MediaLive stream directly to YouTube using RTMPS?

YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. However, AWS’s documentation that MediaLive RTMP Pull and RTMP Push inputs do not support RTMPS describes MediaLive inputs, not the output capability of a particular channel configuration. It is not enough to establish whether a direct MediaLive-to-YouTube RTMPS output works. Verify the output protocol supported by your selected MediaLive configuration and that YouTube accepts the intended ingest endpoint. Relevant documentation: AWS supported input formats and protocols and YouTube live encoder settings.

What about YouTube HLS ingest?

YouTube documents HLS ingest as an alternative. Its requirements include MPEG-TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT requests. The AWS documentation cited here does not establish that a particular MediaLive output group satisfies all of those requirements. Treat HLS as an option to validate against both services’ configuration details, not as a confirmed drop-in path. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Copyright and YouTube live eligibility

Looping a file does not grant permission to stream its contents. Use video and audio you own or are licensed to use, and check that the rights cover continuous live streaming. A technically valid MediaLive input does not guarantee that YouTube will accept or keep the broadcast live; channel eligibility and platform enforcement are separate from the AWS file-loop setting.

Before starting, review the copyright safety checklist and confirm that your intended content is suitable for a continuous YouTube stream.

Troubleshooting a looping MediaLive input

  • The file stops at the end. Confirm that the input is a file input and that sourceEndBehavior is set to LOOP, rather than relying on a separate schedule or process.
  • MediaLive cannot use the source. Check that the MP4, TS, or M2TS source is at a supported S3 or HTTP(S) location and is accessible to the configured input.
  • A TS source is still being written. AWS says growing TS files written while in use are unsupported; use a static file instead.
  • The 1080p stream does not match the intended motion smoothness. Confirm whether the output is 30 or 60 fps and use the corresponding H.264 bitrate recommendation: 14 Mbps at 30 fps or 17 Mbps at 60 fps.
  • YouTube does not accept the output connection. Do not infer output support from MediaLive’s RTMP input documentation. Verify the selected output protocol and the intended YouTube endpoint; if considering HLS, check segment duration, playlist behavior, and HTTPS request requirements.
  • The stream connects but video or audio is wrong. Recheck the source tracks, selected codecs, output settings, frame rate, and audio sample rate/bitrate against the actual file and YouTube recommendations.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is simply to keep a prerecorded video live on YouTube, StreamNeo is a simpler alternative to configuring and operating a MediaLive channel: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the upload in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Video streams as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
