An FFmpeg packet-write error tells you that FFmpeg could not write output packets; it does not, by itself, identify why. Match the error’s timestamp to YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages, then compare the local encoder preview and any recording with the remote stream. That evidence helps distinguish a source or encoder problem from an outbound connection or ingest-configuration issue without guessing at a root cause.
What an FFmpeg packet-write error means
It marks a failure at the output-writing stage. It is a symptom, not a diagnosis: the line alone cannot establish whether the cause was the source, encoder, network path, ingest settings, destination endpoint, or a remote service. FFmpeg-user mailing-list posts show “Broken pipe” and trailer-writing failures in different output contexts, but those community reports do not prove that every packet-write error has the same cause. See the 2017 RTMP report and the 2023 SIGPIPE discussion.
The exact log context matters. A failure during packet writing is not the same evidence as an error that appears only while FFmpeg writes the trailer at shutdown. Earlier connection, timeout, or handshake messages may be more informative than the final write-error line.
Diagnose the stall in order
1. Preserve the log and timing
- Save the complete FFmpeg stderr output, not just the last line. Note the timestamp, exact error text, whether it occurred during packet writing or trailer writing, and any earlier connection, timeout, or handshake message.
- Record the FFmpeg version and build, output protocol, and destination type. Do not publish your stream key; remove it from logs before sharing them.
- Note whether YouTube reported a stream-health error at the same time. Keep the local log and dashboard timestamps in the same time zone if possible.
2. Read YouTube’s stream-health evidence
Open the stream’s Live Control Room and inspect its timestamped status messages rather than inferring YouTube’s side from FFmpeg’s error alone. YouTube describes red errors as critical and yellow errors as moderate in its live streaming error messages guide. Its live-stream metrics help explains the metrics available in the dashboard. Compare the message and timing with the FFmpeg log; a matching timestamp narrows the investigation but does not automatically identify the underlying cause.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Compare local output with what viewers receive
Check the encoder preview and, if you have one, a local recording. YouTube notes that encoder errors, CPU load, or problems in routed audio and video sources can contribute to poor output. If the local preview is healthy while the remote stream stalls, an outbound connection issue may be involved; that is a reason to test connectivity, not proof that the network is at fault. Follow YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance to test the outbound connection and contact your ISP if the tests reveal problems.
4. Check the actual stream against ingest settings
Compare what FFmpeg is sending with the settings shown for the YouTube ingest: codec and container, bitrate, audio and video stream settings, resolution, and keyframe cadence. YouTube’s encoder settings guide recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals no longer than four seconds. Choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain; a setting that exceeds available upstream capacity can undermine delivery. Use YouTube’s error guide alongside its settings guide when checking the stream configuration.

5. Check RTMPS details only when the log points there
If the evidence includes an SSL or connection-timeout symptom, verify that the RTMPS URL was copied from the current Live Control Room ingest details and that the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions describe trying port 443 for an SSL error. Do not treat a packet-write error by itself as proof that the URL, protocol, or port is wrong.
6. Change one variable at a time
After capturing a baseline, test a stable wired connection if one is available, or compare wired and Wi-Fi behavior if your device and network support both. If upload capacity is insufficient, reduce the selected ingest bitrate or resolution and check whether the stall changes. If local checks do not explain the failure, YouTube advises using the latest encoder and trying another encoder where appropriate. Keep a note of each change and the result so you can tell which evidence actually moved.

Use the evidence to narrow the likely area
| What you observe | Where to investigate next | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Local preview or recording also has errors, missing audio, or other defects | Encoder errors, CPU load, source media, and routed audio/video inputs | It does not establish that the encoder is the only cause of the remote stall. |
| Local output looks healthy, but YouTube reports a problem at the matching time | Read the exact dashboard message, then compare it with the outbound connection and ingest settings. | A healthy local preview does not prove the network is responsible. |
| FFmpeg shows an SSL, connection, or timeout message before the write failure | Check the destination URL and RTMPS support; use YouTube’s RTMPS guidance for an SSL symptom. | A later packet-write error alone does not prove a misconfigured endpoint. |
| Actual bitrate, format, or keyframe interval differs from the selected ingest settings | Align the encoder output with the Live Control Room configuration and YouTube’s published recommendations. | A settings mismatch does not, without more evidence, explain every stall. |
| Stalls vary between wired and Wi-Fi tests | Investigate the outbound network path and available upload capacity; contact the ISP if connectivity tests show a problem. | One successful test does not establish a universal or permanent fix. |
Common mistakes that slow diagnosis
- Fixing the wrong layer: a “Broken pipe” message does not tell you whether to change the source, encoder, network, or endpoint. Use earlier log lines and YouTube’s simultaneous health message.
- Changing several settings together: changing bitrate, protocol, and encoder at once makes the result hard to interpret. Establish a baseline and change one variable at a time.
- Assuming a stream key is invalid: the packet-write error does not establish that. Look for relevant authentication or connection evidence before replacing credentials.
- Lowering quality without checking upload capacity: test whether the selected bitrate is sustainable and compare it with the ingest configuration; change resolution or bitrate only as a controlled test.
- Sharing unredacted logs: remove the stream key and other sensitive connection details before posting logs for help.
