The best setup is a long-running FFmpeg container with read-only access to a compatible local playlist, a stable wired upload connection, and an encoder your host can sustain at 4K/60fps. Use RTMPS, constant bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval to match YouTube’s guidance. The right Compose file still depends on your operating system, CPU or GPU, media formats, playlist-transition needs, and recovery requirements; no single configuration is best for every host.
Choose the design before choosing the Compose file
Treat this as four connected parts: the media playlist, FFmpeg’s decode/filter/encode process, Docker’s access to files and hardware, and YouTube’s ingest endpoint. Decide these items before deployment:
- Host and runtime: operating system, Docker Engine/Compose version, and whether the platform supports the GPU runtime you intend to use.
- Media: video and audio codecs, dimensions, frame rates, stream counts, and whether every playlist item has compatible streams.
- Output: H.264, H.265, or AV1; SDR or HDR; and whether sources need scaling, frame-rate conversion, or other filters.
- Continuity: whether a short gap at file boundaries is acceptable, and what should happen after an FFmpeg exit, Docker restart, or network interruption.
- Network: stable upload capacity above the selected video bitrate plus audio and transport overhead. YouTube’s encoder targets are not a guarantee that a particular connection can sustain them.
The example below is a starting point for a single SDR output from local files, not a tested universal deployment. It assumes an FFmpeg image with the needed protocols, decoder, filters, and encoder. Pin an image you have verified rather than assuming every image contains the same build.
Set 4K60 output to YouTube’s published ingest targets
YouTube’s current encoder-settings page, accessed 2026-10-03, lists 2160p at 60fps and gives different bitrate recommendations by codec. Use the figure for the codec you actually send; 50 Mbps is not a universal 4K60 requirement.

| Output codec | YouTube 4K/2160p60 minimum | YouTube 4K/2160p60 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| H.265 or AV1 | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
YouTube specifies CBR, recommends a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. It supports RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery to its servers. For SDR, its guidance specifies Rec. 709. Audio can be AAC or MP3; YouTube lists AAC-only support for 5.1 surround over RTMP/RTMPS. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. HDR has separate guidance, including H.265 for HDR over RTMP(S), so do not apply the SDR example below to an HDR delivery without adapting the color and codec settings.
Verify the FFmpeg build and hardware path
Check the actual binary inside the image
FFmpeg options vary with its build. Before writing a long-running service, run these checks against the exact image you plan to deploy:
ffmpeg -versionconfirms which binary and build configuration you are testing.ffmpeg -protocolsshould show RTMPS support if that is the selected ingest protocol.ffmpeg -encodersshould list your intended encoder, such aslibx264orh264_nvenc.- For NVIDIA hardware, check
ffmpeg -h encoder=h264_nvencand then test a short encode with the same host, image, and device configuration used in production.
FFmpeg documents its command-line media processing at ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg.html and protocol support, including RTMPS, at ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg-protocols.html.
Choose CPU or GPU encoding based on sustained performance
CPU encoding avoids GPU passthrough complexity, but the host must sustain real-time decode, any filters, and 4K60 encoding continuously. There is no universal CPU threshold established here; test your own media and filters over a representative period. GPU encoding can offload encoding, but it is not automatically available just because the host has a graphics card. The device, driver, container runtime, and FFmpeg build must all support the selected encoder.

NVIDIA documents FFmpeg integrations including h264_nvenc, hevc_nvenc, and av1_nvenc in its FFmpeg with NVIDIA GPU Hardware Acceleration guide. Confirm that YouTube supports the chosen ingest codec, the installed FFmpeg exposes its encoder, and the specific hardware can encode it. Docker’s GPU access guide describes NVIDIA container prerequisites; GPU access is not installed or configured automatically by Compose.
H.264, H.265, or AV1?
For a first deployment, choose based on end-to-end compatibility and a successful test, not bitrate alone. YouTube lists all three codecs in its encoder settings, with the 4K60 targets above. H.264 is a straightforward baseline when the installed CPU or GPU supports it well. H.265 or AV1 can use YouTube’s lower recommended bitrate target, but the encoder must be present and compatible with your hardware and chosen workflow. Do not mix HDR and SDR assumptions; use YouTube’s applicable guidance for the actual output.
Mount the playlist and reserve resources in Compose
Keep the media library read-only in the container, keep the playlist/configuration separate from media, and arrange a protected way to provide the YouTube stream key at runtime. Do not put the key in a public Compose file, image, source repository, or shared logs. This Compose skeleton illustrates the service shape; the image’s entrypoint and secret-injection method may need adapting.

In Compose GPU reservations, capabilities: [gpu] is required; use either count or device_ids, not both. The Docker instructions cover this reservation pattern at Run Docker Compose services with GPU access. For CPU-only encoding, omit the device reservation. Confirm GPU access on the host and in the container before relying on the service. A Docker restart policy restarts an exited container; it does not prove that FFmpeg will reconnect correctly after every network interruption.

Build a playlist that matches your continuity needs
Use a playlist format and FFmpeg input strategy appropriate to the files. A concat-demuxer playlist is a practical starting point when items have compatible stream layouts and codec parameters. Create /config/playlist.txt with entries such as:
file '/media/part-001.mp4'
file '/media/part-002.mp4'
Paths are interpreted in the container, so every listed file must be mounted at that path. Do not assume a playlist will be gapless: differing codecs, dimensions, frame rates, timestamps, audio layouts, or end-of-file behavior can introduce breaks or errors. If seamless transitions matter, normalize and test the media set or use a playback design that explicitly handles transitions. The chosen loop method and restart behavior should be verified with the exact FFmpeg build and files; a loop flag alone does not guarantee uninterrupted playback.
A practical validation order is to play each item individually, test the entire sequence through at least one boundary, then test a full loop. Watch FFmpeg logs and YouTube’s live preview for frozen video, timestamp warnings, missing audio, or unexpected resolution changes before treating it as unattended.
Encode and send a test stream
The following command is an SDR H.264 example for a compatible playlist. It scales and pads to 3840×2160, converts to 60fps and yuv420p, maps the first video stream and optional first audio stream, and uses a two-second GOP. Scaling a smaller source up does not add detail. This example uses the CPU encoder; if using NVENC, replace the video-encoder options only after verifying the image’s encoder help and GPU access.

Here YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL and YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY stand for values you obtain from your YouTube live setup; inject them securely rather than committing them. Copy the RTMPS server/stream URL and key from the YouTube interface, and confirm the complete output target is correct before starting. Do not expose a key in terminal history, screenshots, logs, or a public configuration. The encoder flags can differ by build: if the command reports an unrecognized option or encoder, check the actual binary and adjust to its supported options. The example is not an HDR configuration.
For H.265 or AV1, select the corresponding FFmpeg encoder and YouTube bitrate target rather than retaining the H.264 encoder or 50 Mbps recommendation. Encoder names and options depend on the build. NVIDIA documents relevant NVENC encoder integration in its hardware acceleration guide; use its guidance alongside the local encoder help and a real test. YouTube’s LiveStreams API reference also documents RTMP/RTMPS ingestion.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan recovery and monitoring separately from playback
Decide which layer handles each failure rather than treating “restart” as a complete reliability plan:
- FFmpeg exits: Docker’s
unless-stoppedpolicy can restart the container after a process exit, subject to host availability and the container’s command behavior. - Network drops while FFmpeg remains alive: determine whether that FFmpeg build and invocation reconnect successfully; test by interrupting connectivity in a controlled test. Do not assume a Docker restart policy detects a stalled process.
- Malformed or unavailable media: inspect logs and test file access, paths, permissions, and playlist entries. A restart cannot repair a bad source file.
- YouTube ingest or stream setup changes: verify the live event, RTMPS target, and stream key in YouTube’s interface. Rotate a key if it may have been exposed.
- Unattended operations: retain logs, alert on process exit or lack of expected output, and check the YouTube preview/status. Set a maintenance plan for image, driver, and key changes.
There is no single universal playlist-loop or reconnect-supervision design established for all host platforms and media collections. Separate scheduling, encoding, and supervision where needed, and validate the failure cases that matter to your channel.

Common problems and practical checks
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot open the output or reports an unknown protocol | The image lacks RTMPS support, the target is malformed, or credentials were not injected. | Run ffmpeg -protocols in the deployed image; verify the URL and secret injection without printing the key into public logs. |
| Encoder not found or cannot initialize | The FFmpeg build lacks the encoder, or GPU/runtime/driver access is incomplete. | Check ffmpeg -encoders and encoder help; validate host toolkit and device access in the container. |
| Stream falls below real time or stalls | Host cannot sustain decode, filtering, encoding, or upload; source access may also be interrupted. | Test the full filter and playlist workload; compare stable upload capacity with the chosen video and audio bitrate and overhead. |
| Playlist breaks or has gaps at item boundaries | Files may have mismatched streams, timestamps, frame rates, or formats; looping behavior may not suit the set. | Test each file and boundary with the production command. Normalize incompatible media or choose a transition-aware design. |
| YouTube rejects or reports poor stream quality | Codec, resolution/frame rate, bitrate mode, keyframe interval, color mode, or ingest target may not match the selected YouTube settings. | Check the applicable codec-specific YouTube guidance and inspect the actual output parameters and live preview. |
| Container restarts but the live stream does not recover | A process restart is not the same as proven reconnect supervision; stream/event state or output configuration may need attention. | Test FFmpeg exit and network interruption separately, review logs, and check the YouTube event and stream target. |
DIY cost and cloud alternative
What the Docker route costs operationally
A local Docker setup uses your existing host, but 24/7 operation depends on its power, cooling, hardware capacity, storage, internet service, and maintenance. GPU encoding may require supported hardware and a configured driver/toolkit path. Compare the total running cost and operational burden rather than bitrate alone; the right balance depends on the host and how much supervision you want to own.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is the #1 alternative when the goal is keeping a prerecorded YouTube playlist live without maintaining a Docker host: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; one free day per account. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube and plays uploaded video rather than going live from a camera. Start the free trial at StreamNeo registration.
For Indian creators, UPI and cards are available for payment; card checkout is available worldwide. If you want to keep the workflow DIY, the free upload-time calculator can help estimate transfer time.
