If an encoder is sending a live stream to a MediaPackage v2 channel, select HLS or CMAF to match the encoder’s output. If the video is already recorded, the documented route is a VOD asset workflow—not choosing HLS or CMAF because the video came from YouTube.
Can MediaPackage ingest a YouTube video URL?
The AWS MediaPackage documentation reviewed here does not document a path for ingesting a YouTube playback URL directly. For a live MediaPackage v2 channel, an upstream source or encoder must send a supported ingest format. For prerecorded content, the classic MediaPackage VOD workflow uses source content in Amazon S3.
That is a limit of what the cited documentation establishes, not proof of a categorical AWS prohibition. If the only source you have is a YouTube URL, obtain an authorized source asset or arrange for an encoder to deliver a supported stream before configuring MediaPackage.
Choose the workflow based on what you have

When to choose HLS or CMAF in MediaPackage v2
HLS and CMAF are live ingest formats in MediaPackage v2, not labels for whether a video is prerecorded. The upstream encoder’s packaging determines which input type fits.

HLS
For HLS channel creation, AWS specifies an encoder producing HLS with TS streams and sending them using HTTP PUT. Choose HLS when that is the encoder’s ingest output.
CMAF
For CMAF, the encoder must follow the DASH-IF Live Media Ingest Protocol. Choose CMAF when the upstream encoder sends that specified format.

Both documented v2 live inputs are pushed over HTTPS. AWS specifies unencrypted media segments and at least one video track; audio and video tracks can be muxed or unmuxed. A channel policy is required when sources are outside your AWS account.
Check the channel setting before creation
In the MediaPackage v2 CreateChannel API, InputType is immutable after channel creation. The allowed values are HLS, CMAF, and MULTIVIEW; if you omit the value, the API defaults to HLS. Verify the encoder’s output before creating the channel, since changing the input format is not a simple channel edit. AWS describes MULTIVIEW as a channel that composites other channels and has no ingest of its own.

What the classic VOD route means for a recording
MediaPackage’s classic service distinguishes live input from VOD assets: live content comes from an upstream encoder, while VOD source content resides in an S3 bucket. The documented VOD formats include HLS and MP4 with a SMIL manifest. A YouTube video’s origin does not, by itself, make it a MediaPackage v2 HLS or CMAF live input.
Practical checklist
- If the video is already recorded: determine whether you have an authorized asset that can be staged in S3, then follow the classic VOD asset workflow.
- If an encoder is sending live output: inspect its ingest packaging and choose HLS or CMAF accordingly.
- If all you have is a YouTube URL: do not select an input type based on that URL; the reviewed AWS pages do not establish direct URL ingestion.
- If creating a v2 channel: set and verify
InputTypebefore channel creation, because it is immutable.
