For a simple, low-resource stream, start by evaluating Vultr’s shared-CPU Cloud Compute against your encoder’s measured CPU use and the plan’s outbound bandwidth allowance. Choose dedicated-CPU Optimized Cloud Compute when sustained encoding or complex scenes need more predictable CPU resources. There is no universal Vultr instance size guaranteed to handle every resolution, frame rate, scene, or codec. Test the actual workload and current price in your target location before committing.
What “VPS” and “Cloud Compute” mean at Vultr
“VPS” is a general term for a virtual private server. In Vultr’s product taxonomy, the relevant product is Cloud Compute, which includes shared-CPU plans. Optimized Cloud Compute uses dedicated CPUs. The choice is not simply between a VPS and a cloud server; it is between compute categories with different resource characteristics.
Vultr’s standard Cloud Compute uses previous-generation Intel CPUs and regular SSD storage. Its High Frequency plans emphasize higher clock speeds and NVMe storage; High Performance plans use newer Intel Xeon or AMD EPYC CPUs with NVMe. Plan and location availability can vary, so verify the current options for the region you intend to use.
Shared CPU vs. dedicated CPU: which fits your stream?
| Decision factor | Shared-CPU Cloud Compute | Dedicated-CPU Optimized Cloud Compute |
|---|---|---|
| CPU resources | Virtual CPU resources are shared; Vultr positions these plans for general applications and workloads. | Dedicated virtual CPUs are intended to provide more consistent, predictable compute performance. |
| When to evaluate it | A static or low-complexity scene that passes a real stream test within CPU and transfer limits. | Sustained encoding, complex scenes, or measured CPU pressure where predictability matters. |
| How to select a plan | Compare vCPU, memory, storage, bandwidth, tier, region, and current price. | Choose General Purpose or a CPU-, memory-, or storage-focused ratio based on the measured bottleneck. |
| Main cost consideration | Plan cost plus included outbound transfer and any applicable overage. | Potentially higher compute-tier cost, plus the same need to check transfer allowance and other services. |
| What the plan description does not establish | No universal plan size for a 24/7 YouTube encoder. | Dedicated CPU does not guarantee a particular encode resolution or uninterrupted streaming. |
For a static prerecorded video or a simple scene, shared CPU may be a reasonable first option to test. A more involved OBS scene or sustained encoding load may justify testing a dedicated-CPU plan. Those are starting points, not guarantees: the encoder’s settings and actual CPU use determine whether the chosen instance is adequate.

How to choose and test a Vultr instance
- Choose a location and compute family. Check the current availability and plan details for your preferred region. Compare standard, High Frequency, or High Performance Cloud Compute if considering shared CPU; consider Optimized Cloud Compute if a measured workload needs dedicated CPU resources.
- Match the instance to the workload. Compare vCPU, memory, storage, included outbound bandwidth, and current plan price. Consider what OBS must do: play media, composite sources, add transitions or overlays, and encode the output. Do not select a server based on resolution alone.
- Provision the machine and install your encoder. Vultr supports provisioning through its Console, API, CLI, or Terraform. Its official OBS-on-Ubuntu guide describes an OBS desktop setup; Vultr also documents an OBS-based Broadcaster Marketplace route. Check current image and Marketplace availability before relying on a particular deployment path.
- Configure YouTube ingestion and OBS. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and obtain its stream key and server settings. In OBS, configure the stream destination and key, then set the output resolution, frame rate, encoder, bitrate, rate control, and keyframe interval. Keep the stream key private; anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Run a representative test. Test the actual media, scene complexity, resolution, frame rate, audio, and encoder settings you expect to use. Watch OBS CPU use and YouTube’s stream-health messages. Vultr’s OBS tutorial advises lowering output resolution or upgrading to a plan with more vCPUs if CPU use is high. A successful short test is useful, but it does not establish a server uptime guarantee.
- Verify operation after disconnecting. Follow Vultr’s guidance to check that OBS remains active after you disconnect from the desktop. Decide how you will monitor the process and restore it if OBS, the server, or the network path stops working.
YouTube settings to use as a starting point
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance for the exact resolution, frame rate, and codec. Its recommended H.264 reference bitrates include:
| Output | YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate | YouTube AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 or 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended encoder settings, not a Vultr server-sizing specification. Consult YouTube’s current table for other resolutions and codecs.

How much bandwidth will a 24/7 stream use?
Vultr counts outbound transfer toward a plan’s bandwidth allowance and does not meter inbound transfer. A stream sent from your VPS to YouTube is outbound. Estimate the data volume from the bitrate you actually use, then compare it with the current plan allowance.
Planning formula: bitrate in megabits per second × seconds streamed ÷ 8 = megabytes transferred. Divide by the number of megabytes per gigabyte used by your billing or planning convention to estimate gigabytes. Allow extra for audio and protocol overhead. This is a planning estimate, not observed usage or a guaranteed bill.

Costs and operational reliability to check
Compute price alone does not determine the total cost. Check the instance’s current price and included outbound transfer in the intended region, then account for any overage and optional services such as storage or backups if you use them. Pricing and availability can change; verify them on Vultr’s current product and billing pages.

A VPS can keep an encoder running independently of your home computer, but that does not by itself guarantee continuous availability. The sources do not establish a particular uptime guarantee or SLA for a specific plan. Build a recovery routine: monitor YouTube’s stream health, confirm the encoder stays active after disconnecting, and know how to restart the process after an interruption.

Copyright and channel-policy checks before going live
A server’s ability to broadcast does not grant permission to use the audio or video in your stream. Confirm you have the necessary rights to every recording, song, clip, image, and other element you broadcast, and review YouTube’s current live-streaming and channel policies. A long-running or looped broadcast is not exempt from copyright rules or other platform requirements. Keep records of licenses and permissions where applicable, and respond to YouTube notices through the channel’s normal account tools.
Common Vultr streaming problems and fixes
- OBS reports high CPU use or the stream stutters: Check whether the encoder or scene is overloading the instance. Reduce output resolution or scene complexity and test again; if the workload still exceeds available CPU, compare a plan with more vCPUs or test dedicated CPU.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: Check the outgoing bitrate, RTMPS destination, keyframe interval, and the instance’s actual network delivery. Test with network headroom and representative content instead of assuming the plan’s advertised transfer allowance guarantees a stable path.
- The stream stops after you close the remote desktop: Confirm OBS remains active after disconnecting, as Vultr’s tutorial directs. If it does not, adjust the deployment and session setup so the encoder process continues, then reconnect and verify the channel output.
- The stream key is rejected or the channel is not receiving video: Check that the current YouTube stream key and server settings were entered correctly in OBS and that the intended stream is active in YouTube Studio. Keep keys private and replace a key if it has been exposed.
- The monthly transfer estimate is unexpectedly high: Recalculate from the actual output bitrate and hours streamed, include overhead, and compare usage with the current plan’s outbound allowance. Confirm the provider’s current overage terms before the stream runs continuously.
- The archive does not contain the whole 24/7 broadcast: YouTube’s stated automatic archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours. Use a separate recording strategy if a complete archive is important.
