There is no single MediaPackage HLS preset that makes a 24/7 YouTube stream work. Configure MediaPackage to package the incoming content for HLS playback, then configure a separate encoder or sender to deliver a supported live feed to YouTube using the protocol, ingest URL and stream key selected in YouTube. A MediaPackage playback URL is not, by itself, YouTube’s ingest destination. The right segment and manifest settings depend on whether you use classic MediaPackage or MediaPackage v2, the source segment cadence, and the sender’s format. AWS’s MediaPackage v2 endpoint guide and YouTube’s HLS setup instructions describe distinct parts of that chain.

Understand the two sides of the pipeline

MediaPackage is a packager and origin service: it receives media and produces HLS output for a playback destination. YouTube Live, by contrast, expects a sending component—such as an HLS-capable encoder for HLS ingest—to connect to YouTube’s ingest URL with the corresponding stream key. Keep those roles separate when planning the system:

  1. Input to MediaPackage: the source feed and its segment or fragment cadence.
  2. MediaPackage output: an HLS manifest and media segments, with settings determined by the MediaPackage generation and endpoint type.
  3. Delivery to YouTube: the actual encoder or sender must use YouTube’s chosen ingest protocol, URL and stream key. Do not treat the MediaPackage viewer playback URL as the YouTube ingest URL.

A manifest loading successfully confirms only that part of the packaging path. It does not establish that the sender can deliver a compatible feed to YouTube or that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.

Identify your MediaPackage version and endpoint before changing settings

First establish whether the deployment uses classic AWS Elemental MediaPackage or MediaPackage v2, and identify the endpoint type and its configuration interface. The classic guide documents HLS packager fields; the v2 guide documents origin endpoints, segment and manifest settings, and related behavior. Field names, available options and limits are not interchangeable assumptions. Check the console or API for the service actually deployed.

Choose the HLS segment duration to fit the input

Set the output segment duration to match the input segment or fragment cadence, or to a multiple of it. AWS documents that a mismatched requested duration is rounded to the nearest multiple of the input segment duration. As a result, entering a target number does not guarantee that MediaPackage will produce segments of exactly that length.

There is no universal segment duration for every 24/7 YouTube pipeline established by the cited AWS and YouTube guidance. Determine the source cadence first, choose a compatible target, and inspect the resulting manifests and playback. Changing the output duration without coordinating it with the input can yield a different segment pattern than intended. See the classic HLS field guidance or the v2 endpoint guide for the applicable service.

Set the manifest window for playback lookback, not channel runtime

The live playlist or manifest window controls how much recent content is represented in the rolling HLS manifest. It is not a timer for how long the channel runs: a continuous 24/7 operation and a short rolling playback window can coexist.

For MediaPackage v2, AWS documents a maximum manifest window of 900 seconds (15 minutes). Do not apply that numeric limit automatically to classic MediaPackage; the classic guide exposes a live playlist window setting, but the cited documentation does not establish the same maximum for that service generation. Select the value available for your version and endpoint based on the recent playback lookback your viewers or downstream workflow require.

Decide whether to include program date and time tags

MediaPackage v2 can insert HLS EXT-X-PROGRAM-DATE-TIME tags, associating segments with wall-clock time. They can support timeline seeking or display when that presentation is useful. For ordinary HLS they are optional; AWS says they are required for low-latency HLS in its v2 guide. Enable them when the playback or latency design needs them, rather than treating them as a general requirement for a 24/7 stream. Confirm the option and behavior for the actual endpoint in the v2 guide.

Keep time-shift settings separate from the manifest window

MediaPackage v2 has a separate startover window for time-shifted viewing. AWS documents a maximum of 1,209,600 seconds (14 days) for that setting. It serves a different purpose from the rolling manifest window, whose documented v2 maximum is 900 seconds (15 minutes). Configure startover only if viewers need catch-up or startover playback; it is not required just because the channel operates continuously.

Choose and configure YouTube ingest separately

YouTube documents both RTMPS encoder workflows and HLS ingestion. YouTube recommends RTMPS generally; HLS is an available option when the sending encoder supports it or the workflow calls for it. The correct choice depends on sender protocol support, codec requirements, stream-key configuration and the operations team’s ability to test and monitor the continuous feed.

Ingest choice What to configure Important distinction
RTMPS Use the YouTube ingest URL and stream key shown for the selected YouTube stream, with an encoder configured for RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS generally; MediaPackage HLS endpoint settings do not configure the encoder’s YouTube connection.
HLS Create or select a YouTube stream key configured for HLS, then give the resulting HTTPS stream URL and key to an HLS-capable sender. This is a YouTube ingestion workflow. Do not substitute a MediaPackage playback URL for YouTube’s HLS ingest URL.

For HLS key and URL setup, follow YouTube’s HLS instructions. For stream URL and key management, see Manage live stream settings. Confirm the selected key’s protocol and the sender’s settings together; a valid key for one protocol is not evidence that a different protocol is configured correctly.

Check codecs and encoder settings across the full chain

A codec accepted by MediaPackage is not automatically compatible end to end with YouTube ingestion. AWS lists H.264 or H.265 video and AAC audio among supported live HLS output combinations, while YouTube has its own ingestion constraints. Check the exact codec, resolution and protocol against YouTube’s current encoder guidance and the sender you intend to use before deploying. AWS’s list is at Live supported codecs and input types.

YouTube’s encoder settings page gives bitrate guidance by codec and resolution and recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding 4 seconds, for the encoder settings described there. These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not a universal MediaPackage segment-duration rule. Use the current table for the selected resolution and ingest method rather than assuming one bitrate applies to every stream. YouTube’s guidance also recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream-health messages: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Keep manifest naming and sender paths consistent

In MediaPackage v2, the HLS manifest name is appended to the endpoint path, and MediaPackage adds an extension such as .m3u8. The HLS manifest’s name can override the origin endpoint’s name. Confirm the final path from the deployed endpoint configuration and use the appropriate URL in the component that consumes MediaPackage output. This path remains distinct from YouTube’s ingest URL, which belongs in the YouTube sender configuration.

Build and validate the 24/7 workflow

  1. Record the deployment details. Note the MediaPackage generation and endpoint type, source segment cadence, intended output codecs and resolution, desired latency, and whether YouTube ingest will be RTMPS or HLS.
  2. Configure the applicable endpoint. Set the segment duration in relation to the source cadence; set the rolling manifest window for playback lookback; configure program date/time tags or a startover window only if the use case calls for them.
  3. Configure the actual YouTube sender. Select the matching YouTube ingest protocol, then enter the corresponding YouTube URL and stream key in the HLS-capable encoder or RTMPS encoder.
  4. Test representative content before relying on the feed. Include audio and visible movement, inspect that MediaPackage manifests and segments are being produced, and verify that YouTube receives the stream and reports healthy status. A valid manifest alone does not confirm the end-to-end path.
  5. Monitor after launch. Watch YouTube’s health messages and the deployed packaging and sender components. Check for segment cadence or format mismatches when playback or ingest is unhealthy, and confirm that the sender is using the intended URL, protocol and stream key.
  6. Plan long-running event and archive handling. YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. The cited guidance does not establish a single uninterrupted archive guarantee for a stream exceeding 12 hours, so verify current YouTube behavior and choose an event, restart or separate archive workflow if uninterrupted archiving is required.

Common configuration problems and what to check

  • The MediaPackage manifest works, but YouTube is not receiving a stream: verify that the sender uses YouTube’s ingest URL and stream key, not the MediaPackage playback URL, and that its configured protocol matches the selected YouTube key.
  • Output segments do not match the entered duration: compare the requested duration with the input segment cadence. AWS says MediaPackage rounds a mismatched output duration to a multiple of the source segment or fragment duration.
  • A setting or limit in instructions is missing from the console: check whether the endpoint is classic MediaPackage or v2. The guides describe different generations and their field names or limits should not be assumed to transfer.
  • Playback or ingest fails despite supported codecs being listed: validate the format across both MediaPackage and YouTube’s selected ingest path. AWS support for a codec combination is not an end-to-end compatibility guarantee.
  • The rolling playlist does not retain the desired playback history: review the manifest window setting. For v2, the documented maximum is 900 seconds; startover history is a separate setting and should not be mistaken for the manifest window.
  • A long-running stream does not produce the expected archive: verify current YouTube archive behavior for the event length. The cited YouTube guide states automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours, but does not establish one uninterrupted archive for a stream exceeding that duration.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is simply to keep uploaded video playing on a YouTube channel around the clock, StreamNeo is a simpler alternative to operating a MediaPackage-to-YouTube pipeline: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It streams to YouTube only and does not go live from a camera.
