Add MediaLive, CDN delivery, data transfer, and applicable taxes separately if you need an end-to-end workflow estimate. There is no reliable single rupee figure without your region, stream configuration, audience and billing details.
First confirm MediaPackage belongs in your YouTube workflow
Do not start with a price until you know which services your stream actually uses. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS; it also mentions HLS in a specific HDR-related context. AWS’s documented general MediaPackage live flow receives HLS from an upstream encoder such as MediaLive. Those descriptions do not establish that a MediaPackage endpoint connects directly to every YouTube ingest setup. Check the exact encoder output, MediaPackage endpoint and YouTube ingest method before treating MediaPackage as required. YouTube encoder settings · AWS MediaPackage live flow
YouTube also transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats for viewers, according to YouTube Help. That does not remove the need to price the AWS services that encode, package or deliver the source stream.
What to include in a MediaPackage estimate
MediaPackage live costs depend on data ingested and content originated or packaged. More input renditions, higher bitrates, longer events and more data served from MediaPackage generally increase the relevant volumes. The applicable rates depend on Region and MediaPackage generation. Use the current AWS MediaPackage pricing page and, for MediaPackage v2, its pricing documentation.

| Cost component | What to estimate |
|---|---|
| Live ingest | Total GB received by MediaPackage across all renditions and actual input pipelines or streams. |
| Origination or packaging | GB served or originated by MediaPackage, accounting for content served from cache where applicable. |
| Other workflow services | Price separately when estimating the complete pipeline: encoding, CDN delivery, data transfer, other AWS services and applicable taxes. |
| Currency conversion | Convert the USD service charges using the applicable AWS invoice USD-to-INR rate for your account. |
A CDN cache can reduce MediaPackage’s originated volume. AWS’s MediaPackage v2 pricing documentation says, “Content that’s cached and served from a content delivery network (CDN) doesn’t incur this per GB charge.” That statement concerns MediaPackage’s per-GB streamed-out charge; CDN distribution can still have its own cost. See AWS pricing for MediaPackage and the AWS live-streaming deployment guide.
Calculate the estimate step by step
- Set the scope and architecture. Record the AWS Region, MediaPackage generation, whether MediaPackage is in the actual ingest path, and whether you want its line item alone or the complete workflow. Confirm the source encoder and endpoint compatibility rather than assuming a direct connection to YouTube.
- Calculate ingested data. Sum the bitrates of all renditions sent to MediaPackage. Convert the combined rate to GB per hour using the same convention as the pricing estimate, multiply by event hours, and account for the number of input pipelines or streams MediaPackage receives. Include redundancy only if those additional inputs are actually received and billable in your design.
- Estimate originated data. Estimate audience delivery volume from average delivered bitrate, viewing hours and viewers. Apply an explicit cache-hit assumption to determine the portion served or originated from MediaPackage. Prefer observed workload data; a cache ratio is an assumption, not a guarantee.
- Apply current regional rates. Multiply ingest GB by the current ingest rate for the selected Region and generation; multiply originated GB by the corresponding origination rate. Add any other applicable MediaPackage charges shown for that configuration.
- Convert the USD subtotal to INR. Use the USD-to-INR conversion applicable to your AWS invoice, rather than presenting a market exchange rate as the exact amount AWS will bill.
- Add non-MediaPackage services if needed. Estimate MediaLive, CloudFront or another CDN, data transfer, other AWS services and applicable taxes as separate lines. Only then label the sum an end-to-end estimate.
Formulas and a worked volume example
MediaPackage USD estimate = (ingested GB × current regional ingest rate) + (MediaPackage-originated GB × current regional origination rate) + any applicable transfer or other charges.

AWS’s pricing-page example uses 9.5 Mbps across five renditions and estimates 4.175 GB per hour per stream using its stated conversion convention. This is an AWS example, not a universal conversion promise for every accounting method. The same pricing page gives example rates of $0.030 per GB for ingest and $0.050 per GB originated in US East (N. Virginia); they are regional examples, not INR prices or rates for every MediaPackage generation. Verify current rates for your configuration on AWS MediaPackage pricing.
AWS’s deployment guide illustrates a 99% cache-hit assumption in a one-hour, 10,000-viewer example priced for US-East-1 under standard pricing assumptions. It also illustrates a different 97.5% cache-hit assumption in another scenario. Treat both as scenario inputs, not expected cache performance or quotes for your stream. CloudFront delivery can be a substantial part of a live-event estimate, so a MediaPackage subtotal alone is not a full workflow budget.

Convert USD charges to rupees without overstating precision
AWS publishes service rates in USD. AWS guidance says eligible accounts with an India contact and billing address are billed by AWS India in INR; service charges are computed in USD and converted for billing under AWS’s terms. The exact invoice exchange rate and taxes depend on account and billing circumstances. Use the rate reflected in the applicable AWS invoice or billing information rather than calling a hand-selected public FX rate the amount AWS will charge. See AWS account guidance for India and AWS India billing guidance and FAQs.
If you use a public exchange rate to plan, label the converted figure illustrative and show the assumed rate and date. Without the applicable AWS invoice conversion and tax treatment, an exact billed rupee total is not established.

Keep MediaPackage and full-workflow totals separate
For a MediaPackage-only figure, include only its applicable ingest, origination and other MediaPackage charges. For an end-to-end YouTube Live budget, separately price the upstream encoder and delivery path. MediaLive charges vary with configured inputs, outputs and channel characteristics; consult AWS Elemental MediaLive pricing. Include CloudFront or another CDN’s delivery cost and any applicable data transfer charges. The AWS deployment guide provides examples, but its totals assume US-East-1 standard pricing and no free-tier use or discounts; do not reuse those totals as rupee quotes for another deployment.
Inputs that can change the result substantially
- Region and generation: rates differ; compare only after identifying both.
- Rendition ladder and redundancy: summed input bitrate and the number of actual pipelines affect ingest volume.
- Event length: a short event and continuous operation accumulate very different volumes.
- Audience and viewing profile: viewer count, average delivered bitrate and viewing hours drive delivery volume.
- Cache ratio: this affects the volume attributed to MediaPackage origination; use a stated, defensible assumption.
- Billing scope: decide whether your requested number is MediaPackage alone or the whole workflow, and account for invoice conversion and taxes accordingly.
Common estimating mistakes
- Using one bitrate instead of summing renditions: add every rendition sent into MediaPackage, then account for the real number of received pipelines.
- Calling a MediaPackage subtotal the YouTube Live bill: include encoder, CDN and other applicable service lines for a complete estimate.
- Charging MediaPackage for cached data as if it were originated: apply the cache assumption to MediaPackage volume, while retaining a separate CDN delivery estimate.
- Using a guessed exchange rate as the invoice rate: report it only as an illustration; AWS’s applicable conversion can differ.
- Assuming an endpoint or protocol connects directly: verify the exact source-to-MediaPackage-to-YouTube path for your configuration.
- Copying an illustrative AWS total: use current rates and recalculate for your Region and workload. AWS’s pricing page has an arithmetic inconsistency in one two-hour example: it states a $27.21 total, while the displayed component arithmetic sums to $13.685. Do not reuse the stated total; recalculate from the applicable rates.
