Formatting erases data on its target, so never choose a device by guessing its name.
Before you start: attach and identify the disk
Attach the volume through your VPS provider’s control panel or CLI, following that provider’s current instructions. The exact attachment steps and device names vary by provider; a volume may not appear in Linux until it has been attached there.
Once attached, inspect the host’s block devices and filesystem identifiers:
lsblk -o NAME,SIZE,TYPE,FSTYPE,LABEL,UUID,MOUNTPOINTS
sudo blkidUse the device tree, capacity, filesystem, UUID and mount points together to identify the candidate disk. Confirm it is not the root or boot device, swap, an existing data volume, or otherwise in use. Do not assume a device such as /dev/sdb is the new disk just because its name looks likely. If the volume was attached moments ago and is not listed, device discovery information may be delayed; follow your distribution and provider’s instructions for refreshing it.

Choose the target and filesystem
Whole disk or partition?
A filesystem can be created directly on a block device or on a partition. A partitioned layout may suit a disk that needs multiple partitions or a provider or organization that requires a partition table. A whole-disk filesystem may suit a simple single-purpose volume. Inspect the device tree and match the target to the layout you intend; do not automatically choose either the whole disk or a partition.
If the volume already contains a filesystem or data, stop and establish whether it must be preserved. Formatting is destructive to the target’s existing contents.

Which filesystem?
For a straightforward Linux-only data volume, ext4 is a reasonable general-purpose default if the provider and workload do not require another filesystem. It is not universally best: account for provider support, workload, cross-platform access, existing filesystem and operational requirements. Use a filesystem-specific utility such as mkfs.ext4 rather than the generic mkfs frontend.
Create the filesystem
Only after confirming the intended target, create ext4 on the correct device or partition. Replace the placeholder with the exact device identified on your VPS:

sudo mkfs.ext4 /dev/CONFIRMED_PARTITIONIf your intended layout places the filesystem directly on the whole disk, use that confirmed device instead. Do not run this command if the target contains data you need; resolve preservation or backup requirements first. The mkfs.ext4 command creates an ext4 filesystem on the named target.
Mount the disk for immediate use
Create a directory to serve as the mount point, mount the confirmed device there, and verify the result:

sudo mkdir -p /mnt/data
sudo mount /dev/CONFIRMED_DEVICE /mnt/data
findmnt /mnt/dataReplace the device placeholder with the device on which you created the filesystem. Check that findmnt shows the intended filesystem at /mnt/data, then check available space before directing applications to it. Mounting overlays the directory view while the filesystem is mounted, so files previously visible in the mount-point directory will not appear there until the volume is unmounted.
Make the mount persist after reboot
A manual mount command does not configure a boot-time mount. Use the filesystem UUID in /etc/fstab rather than a transient /dev/sdX name, which may change as devices are added or removed. Find the new filesystem’s UUID with lsblk -f or sudo blkid, and verify it belongs to the disk you just prepared.

Back up the existing /etc/fstab before editing it. A typical entry for an ext4 data volume is:
UUID=REPLACE_WITH_REAL_UUID /mnt/data ext4 defaults 0 2This is a pattern, not a literal UUID or a universal option set. The six fields specify the source, mount point, filesystem type, options, dump field and fsck pass field. Check your distribution’s documentation and the host’s installed manual for special devices, network-backed volumes or options that depend on its systemd and util-linux versions.
Validate the entry before rebooting:
sudo mount -a
findmnt /mnt/data
lsblk -fIf mount -a reports an error, correct the configuration and test again before rebooting. Avoid replacing or deleting unrelated existing entries.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Risk of formatting the system disk: use the device tree and mounted paths to identify root and boot devices before running
mkfs. Stop if you cannot confidently distinguish the new disk. - Formatting the wrong level: inspect parent and child devices and their
TYPEvalues. Decide whether the filesystem belongs on the whole disk or a partition, then target that exact device. - The disk is missing from
lsblk: confirm provider-side attachment and consult the provider’s instructions for the VPS environment. Recently changed device information may take time to appear. - The disk mounts now but not after reboot: a one-time mount is not persistent. Add a correct UUID-based
/etc/fstabentry and test it withmount -a. mount -afails: check the UUID, mount-point path, filesystem type and fields in the fstab entry; do not reboot until the error is fixed.- Existing mount-point files seem to have disappeared: mounting hides the directory’s prior view while the filesystem is attached. Check the underlying directory after safely unmounting the volume.
