MediaPackage output stopping does not, by itself, identify the failed component. The fault may be upstream of MediaPackage, in its manifest or packaging state, between the endpoint and viewer, or at YouTube’s ingest or policy checks. First establish whether MediaPackage is still receiving input; then check whether its endpoint is serving a changing live manifest.
Find where the stream first stops
Use timestamped evidence from each stage rather than restarting components at random. The exact MediaPackage generation, ingest protocol, encoder, CDN, player, and YouTube configuration matter; the checks below help localize a fault but do not prove a cause on their own.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Record the stream health indicator and any timestamped errors. YouTube displays errors beside the health indicator. Its ingestion guidance specifies H.264 video and AAC audio for proper ingestion. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
- Check whether MediaPackage is receiving input. Compare bytes received and bytes sent in CloudWatch over the incident window, then correlate any change with encoder logs and source or network events. AWS recommends monitoring MediaPackage bytes received and sent, response times, and request counts. If receive activity stopped, investigate the encoder, source, and network path first. AWS MediaPackage monitoring.
- If input continues, inspect the endpoint output. Fetch the MediaPackage endpoint manifest and check its HTTP status, whether media-sequence and segment references keep changing, and whether it contains
EXT-X-ENDLIST. If a CDN sits in front of the endpoint, compare the manifest served directly by MediaPackage with the one served through the CDN. This is a way to narrow down where behavior differs, not proof by itself of the root cause. - Check the playback client. If upstream output resumes and the manifest is live again, refresh or reconnect the player. AWS notes that playback devices may need to refresh before playback resumes.
- Check YouTube policy notices and encoder health. YouTube recommends checking encoder health, audio and video sources, CPU load, the local archive, and outbound internet. If YouTube interrupted a stream after a copyright match, inspect Studio for a strike or interruption notice. Licensed material can still be interrupted if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel. YouTube live-stream troubleshooting and YouTube copyright guidance for live streams.
What the symptoms can mean
MediaPackage stops receiving input
A failed encoder, source, or network path can stop ingest. AWS’s MediaPackage v2 endpoint documentation describes stale manifests when MediaPackage no longer receives ingest streams: manifests stop updating and playback sessions stop. Treat that as a documented v2 configuration description, not as proof that every classic MediaPackage deployment exposes the same setting. AWS MediaPackage v2 stale-manifest documentation.
The upstream HLS stream ended
If an upstream HLS manifest carries EXT-X-ENDLIST, MediaPackage treats the content as complete and serves a static VOD manifest. If encoder output restarts, AWS says the MediaPackage manifest becomes live again; a playback device may still need to refresh. AWS live and VOD manifest behavior.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A redundant input may have failed over
If input redundancy is configured and one active stream ends, MediaPackage can fail over to the other input. The manifest is considered complete only when both incoming streams end. Confirm that redundancy is actually configured and that the backup input is healthy before relying on failover. AWS live and VOD manifest behavior.
YouTube rejects or interrupts the stream
YouTube’s ingest errors and policy notices are separate from whether MediaPackage’s endpoint is still producing output. A copyright match may lead to a placeholder, temporary interruption, or termination. Check the channel’s notices and, for licensed third-party material, whether the rights owner has allowlisted the channel. YouTube copyright guidance for live streams.

The stream is not necessarily stopping because of YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That statement concerns automatic archiving; it does not establish that MediaPackage stops output at 12 hours or that a 24/7 ingest must stop at that point. YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.
Recover without erasing useful evidence
- Save the incident timestamps, CloudWatch received and sent byte trends, encoder logs, endpoint status, manifest samples, and YouTube errors before changing the workflow.
- If evidence shows that input stopped, restore or restart the upstream encoder or output. Then verify that MediaPackage’s manifest changes and check whether YouTube’s preview recovers.
- If MediaPackage is live again but playback is not, refresh or reconnect the playback client.
- Do not reset a channel until you have confirmed whether the workflow uses classic MediaPackage or MediaPackage v2. The reset guidance below is specific to v2.
MediaPackage v2 channel reset: generation-specific procedure
AWS says a v2 channel reset removes previously ingested content. For that workflow, stop the encoder, reset the channel, wait 30 seconds, and then restart the encoder. A v2 endpoint reset clears prior output content and is intended for certain packaging or content-history cases. Do not apply these steps blindly to classic MediaPackage.
