A Basic Droplet can cost less and may suit light or intermittent streams, but its shared CPU performance can vary. Neither plan guarantees a particular resolution or frame rate; test your actual FFmpeg command and YouTube settings before relying on either.
What changes between Basic and CPU-Optimized?
The central difference is CPU access, not a promise about the quality of the stream. DigitalOcean says Basic Droplets use shared CPUs: the hyper-thread may be shared with other Droplets, so available cycles can depend partly on other workloads on the host. CPU-Optimized Droplets provide dedicated vCPUs with guaranteed access to the full hyper-thread. DigitalOcean specifically identifies video and live streaming as suitable CPU-bound workloads for CPU-Optimized plans. That is provider guidance, not an independent FFmpeg benchmark. See DigitalOcean’s Droplet plan guide.
FFmpeg demand depends on what you ask it to do: codec, resolution, frame rate, preset, filters, and whether it is encoding or simply relaying an already encoded stream. The available plan information does not establish a universal minimum vCPU count or show which plan can encode a particular format. Dedicated CPU makes sustained encoding more predictable; it does not prove that a given configuration will be sufficient.
Plan comparison for a YouTube stream
| Factor | Basic Droplet | CPU-Optimized Droplet |
|---|---|---|
| CPU access | Shared; available CPU cycles can vary with other host workloads. | Dedicated vCPUs with guaranteed access to the full hyper-thread. |
| Example size and price | 2 vCPU / 4 GiB: $24/month. | 2 vCPU / 4 GiB: $42/month. |
| Included transfer in those examples | 4,000 GiB. | 4,000 GiB. |
| Fit for this workload | A plausible lower-cost trial for light or intermittent work if variable CPU is acceptable. | The more predictable starting point for continuous, CPU-bound encoding. |
The prices and included transfer figures are listed on DigitalOcean’s pricing page, checked 2026-10-03; its plan catalog and prices can change. The equal-size examples make the price difference visible but do not guarantee equal performance for an FFmpeg workload. Check the current configurations and transfer details at DigitalOcean Droplet pricing before choosing. DigitalOcean also lists Premium variants with higher outbound speeds for CPU-Optimized Droplets; do not assume a particular throughput without checking the exact plan and variant.

Memory is configurable on Basic Droplets. The bundled CPU-Optimized plan family is roughly 2 GiB of RAM per vCPU, but the figures do not establish a precise memory requirement for FFmpeg. Filters and pipeline choices can affect memory use, so monitor your actual process rather than treating a general ratio as a sizing rule.
Choose YouTube ingest settings before sizing the server
Your encoder settings affect both compute demand and network use. YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. YouTube recommends RTMPS. For H.264, its listed bitrate recommendations include 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. Use YouTube’s full, current table for other resolutions and frame rates rather than extrapolating from these examples. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not proof that a particular Droplet can encode at those settings. A high-resolution encode, demanding preset, or additional filters may need more CPU than a lighter pipeline. YouTube automatically transcodes the incoming live stream into multiple viewer-facing output formats; your server still has to produce and deliver the ingest stream you configure.
Bandwidth and monthly transfer are different checks
Your server needs adequate sustained outbound bandwidth as well as enough monthly transfer allowance. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate and advises testing and monitoring stream health. Its guidance states: “Have enough bandwidth: The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available. Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” Read YouTube’s streaming tips.

For a rough transfer estimate, multiply the total outgoing bitrate by streaming hours, then convert bits to bytes and allow for audio and any additional output. As a simple illustration, a constant 17 Mbps stream sends about 7.65 GB in one hour using decimal units, before protocol overhead. At 24 hours a day for 30 days, that is about 5,508 GB. This is an estimate derived from the bitrate, not a DigitalOcean measurement; actual transfer depends on the stream and how the provider accounts for traffic. It also does not tell you whether the Droplet can sustain the required instantaneous outbound speed. The 4,000 GiB listed for the example plans is an allowance, not a throughput guarantee.
How to compare plans without guessing
- Set your target. Choose resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and any FFmpeg filters or encoding preset. Use YouTube’s current ingest guidance for the target you intend to broadcast.
- Match the Droplet size. Compare Basic and CPU-Optimized at the same vCPU and RAM configuration where possible, and check the live price, transfer allowance, and any relevant network variant.
- Start with the plan suited to the workload. For continuous encoding with sustained CPU use, begin with CPU-Optimized. If the stream is light or intermittent and cost matters more than predictable CPU, Basic is a reasonable trial, provided you accept shared-CPU variability.
- Test the real command. Run the full FFmpeg command with representative motion and audio. Watch CPU utilization and headroom, confirm the output bitrate and keyframe behavior, and check YouTube stream health. YouTube explicitly advises testing before a live stream.
- Adjust from evidence. If CPU is saturated, output is unstable, or the stream health indicators show a problem, review the command and network first, then consider a larger or different Droplet. DigitalOcean allows resizing a bundled Droplet to a larger bundled plan, including a different type; confirm the available options for your Droplet before planning a change.
No specific 2-vCPU plan can be called a guaranteed 1080p or 4K FFmpeg server from the available plan and encoder specifications alone. Only a test using your codec, preset, filters, frame rate, and actual outbound path can answer whether it works for your stream.

Common problems and what to check
- CPU stays near full use or the encode falls behind: The selected settings or filters may exceed the available compute, or shared CPU may be variable on Basic. Check the FFmpeg process and logs, then test a less demanding preset or settings; for sustained encoding, compare a CPU-Optimized Droplet.
- YouTube reports unstable stream health despite low CPU use: Check sustained outbound bandwidth, bitrate variability, and network interruptions. Leave the recommended 20% bandwidth headroom and monitor YouTube’s stream health.
- Monthly transfer runs higher than expected: Recalculate from total bitrate and hours streamed, including audio and any additional outputs. Compare the estimate with the specific plan’s current transfer allowance; allowance does not guarantee available throughput.
- The stream connects but the picture or timing is not accepted as expected: Check the selected codec, CBR configuration, frame rate, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Use the two-second recommended interval and do not exceed four seconds.
- A plan looks adequate on paper but fails during a long run: A brief or unrepresentative test may miss sustained CPU or bandwidth issues. Test for a representative duration with the real content and command, and monitor both the encoder and YouTube stream health.
