To loop locally stored videos of different formats on YouTube Live, use OBS Studio’s VLC Video source: add your files in playback order, enable Loop Playlist, then send OBS’s encoded output to YouTube. VLC must be installed, and its architecture must match OBS. Test every file and the full playlist before going live; support for a file depends on the media and software installed on your computer.
How the playlist becomes a YouTube Live stream
OBS decodes your local video files, combines them in a scene, and encodes the resulting program for YouTube. YouTube receives that encoded output—not each original playlist file. That distinction matters: a file that plays locally is a source-media question, while resolution, bitrate, codec, keyframes, and delivery protocol are settings for the outgoing live stream.
For playlist playback, OBS documents a VLC Video source. Its media-source documentation lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM for the separate Media Source feature, and MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV audio. That list is not an exhaustive format matrix for VLC Video. The VLC source uses VLC libraries for extended media support, but actual playback can vary with your OBS and VLC versions, installed codecs, and individual files. See the OBS media-source documentation.
Set up a looping playlist in OBS
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. The VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. Restart OBS after installing VLC if the source does not appear.
- Create a scene for the broadcast. In OBS, select or create a scene, then add a source and choose VLC Video. Add the local files to its playlist in the order you want them to play.
- Check the playlist options. Keep Loop Playlist on so playback restarts after the last item. OBS documents this option as on by default; Shuffle Playlist is off by default. Leave shuffle off for a fixed sequence.
- Fit and preview the video. Check that the source fits the canvas as intended and that each clip’s picture and audio play. Watch through the last clip and the transition back to the first. The documentation does not guarantee seamless transitions, so confirm that cuts, pauses, and audio changes are acceptable for your program.
- Connect OBS to YouTube Live. Follow YouTube’s current live-stream setup to obtain and use your stream key, then enter the stream details in OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key as a password: do not show it in a recording or share it. YouTube recommends RTMPS for standard live ingestion.
- Configure and rehearse the outgoing stream. Choose an encoder and settings supported by your OBS version and computer, then rehearse—using an unlisted or private stream if appropriate. Check YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators before making a scheduled broadcast public.
Configure YouTube’s live encoder settings
Use YouTube’s live encoder guidance for the current settings applicable to your workflow. It lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video support, frame rates up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. The available encoder choices depend on your installed OBS version and hardware; do not assume a particular codec is available on every computer.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Bitrate: Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends. Select a bitrate that fits the output resolution and frame rate, your encoder, and your upload connection; the appropriate target is not established by the source-format list. Leave enough network capacity for stable delivery rather than setting the stream to the maximum your connection can occasionally reach.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. This is encoder guidance, not a measurement of how your stream will perform.
- Resolution and frame rate: Set the OBS output to the dimensions and frame rate you intend to broadcast and can encode reliably. YouTube’s guidance supports up to 60 fps; a source clip’s frame rate does not itself determine the outgoing stream settings.
- Audio: Use AAC or MP3 for the live output, and check the OBS meters while previewing clips with different audio levels.
RTMPS or HLS?
RTMPS is the sensible starting point for a standard OBS-to-YouTube workflow because YouTube recommends it. HLS is a documented alternative, particularly for HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP, but it has higher latency because it delivers media in segments.
HLS also has protocol-specific requirements: YouTube’s setup guidance requires TS segments and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. The YouTube HLS ingestion guide gives encoder-level playlist and segment requirements. Use HLS when your encoder and delivery needs call for it; beginners should not manually construct HLS playlists for a conventional OBS stream.

Test the mixed-format playlist before going public
- Play every playlist entry in OBS; do not infer that an entire batch works from one successful file.
- Check the order, loop point, picture, aspect ratio, and audio for each clip.
- Watch for black frames, missing audio, unexpected scaling, or pauses between files.
- Confirm the YouTube preview receives the expected program and check its stream-health indicators during a rehearsal.
- Rehearse the complete scene and stream on the computer and network you plan to use. Documentation does not guarantee uninterrupted operation for a specific setup or duration.
Common problems and fixes
VLC Video is missing from the source menu
Install VLC and match its architecture to OBS—64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Restart OBS and check again.
A playlist entry shows a black screen or has no sound
Test that file on its own in the VLC Video source, then check the installed OBS/VLC versions and codecs. The documented Media Source format list is not a guarantee that every file will work in VLC Video.

The playlist stops instead of starting over
Open the VLC Video source’s playlist options and verify that Loop Playlist is enabled. Check that the source contains the complete list of files you intended to add.
Playback order changes unexpectedly
Turn off Shuffle Playlist if you need a fixed sequence, then inspect the playlist order in the source settings.

YouTube does not receive the stream or reports poor stream health
Verify the stream key and connection settings in OBS, use the recommended RTMPS route for a standard workflow, and check the encoder settings and YouTube preview. A local preview proves only that OBS can show the source; it does not confirm that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.

Only stream video and audio you have the rights or permissions to use. A clip playing correctly in OBS does not establish that you may broadcast it. Review YouTube’s current rules for copyright and live streams before broadcasting, especially for music, game footage, and material made by someone else. You can use the copyright safety checklist as a practical pre-stream check; it is not a substitute for permission or YouTube’s policies.
