Set FFmpeg’s output dimensions with the scale video filter, then match YouTube’s ingest bitrate and keyframe guidance to the chosen resolution and frame rate. On a small Indian VPS, the right setting is the highest quality that the instance can encode in real time and upload steadily—with about 20% network headroom. There is no universal minimum VPS specification; test your actual files and server before relying on a nonstop stream.
Choose a resolution your VPS can sustain
Resolution is only one part of the load. Higher dimensions generally mean more work to encode and more upload bandwidth, while frame rate and encoder settings also affect resource use. A setting that works for one VPS, source file, or provider may not work for another.
Use YouTube’s ingest recommendations as a starting point, not a guarantee that a particular VPS can handle the encode. The table below gives YouTube’s published H.264 live ingest recommendations; verify the current table for your selected codec and combination before going live, because YouTube also publishes separate settings for other codecs and regional page versions.
| Output target | YouTube H.264 live ingest bitrate recommendation |
|---|---|
| 240p–720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
These are ingest recommendations, not YouTube upload-encoding targets. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, which must not exceed four seconds. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported live ingest video codecs, up to 60 fps. H.264 is the straightforward baseline for the example below.

Budget network capacity for the entire stream, including audio: YouTube says total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Confirm sustained outbound capacity on the actual VPS rather than choosing a stream rate at the provider’s advertised maximum.

Check the installed FFmpeg build
Run ffmpeg -version on the VPS and check the installed documentation for the options available in that build. FFmpeg’s online documentation is regenerated nightly and may describe a newer revision than the binary installed on your server. See the FFmpeg documentation and command-line documentation.

Apply the scale filter
The scale video filter sets output width and height. For a 1280-by-720 output, its dimensions are 1280:720; the relevant filter form is -vf "scale=1280:720". Consult the FFmpeg filters documentation for filter options supported by your build.
Do not force arbitrary dimensions without deciding how the source’s aspect ratio should be handled. If the source and target proportions differ, a direct resize can distort the image. Choose an intentional approach—preserve proportions, crop, or pad—and verify the result visually with your actual files. Check the output for bars, cropping, or stretched gameplay before committing to a long broadcast.

Configure YouTube ingest settings
- Choose the target resolution and frame rate. Start with a target your VPS can plausibly sustain, then use the corresponding current YouTube bitrate recommendation as the ingest target.
- Set H.264 and CBR. Use H.264 as the baseline for this setup and configure a constant video bitrate appropriate to the selected resolution and frame rate. FFmpeg option names and units depend on the chosen encoder; check your installed build and the FFmpeg all-options documentation rather than copying an option blindly.
- Set keyframes to a two-second interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. Match the encoder’s keyframe configuration to the actual frame rate.
- Check total bitrate against network capacity. Include audio when assessing total stream bitrate, and leave the recommended 20% upload headroom.
- Retrieve the ingest URL and stream key. Find the stream URL and key in YouTube Live Control Room using YouTube’s live stream settings guidance. Prefer RTMPS when available; YouTube describes it as RTMP over TLS/SSL, which encrypts the transmission. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
- Keep the stream key private. Do not put it in public logs, a public script repository, or an example command that others can see. Treat it as a credential that can let someone broadcast to your channel.
For the current encoder settings and bitrate tables, check YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance. Its recommendations can change, and codec-specific settings differ.
Make a playlist stream genuinely nonstop
Looping depends on the input format and how the playlist is presented to FFmpeg. There is no universally correct loop command for every playlist structure, so do not assume that a command copied from another setup will loop your files cleanly. Test the exact playlist, file types, and installed FFmpeg version.

- Confirm playback crosses each file boundary without an unintended pause or dropped segment.
- Listen for audio gaps, abrupt volume changes, or missing audio after transitions.
- Check that the playlist reaches its end and returns to the beginning as intended.
- Test what happens if an input file is unavailable or the process needs to restart; verify recovery rather than assuming it.
- Keep the VPS process, network connection, and any required playlist files available for the full run.
Test the VPS before leaving it on
- Use a representative test segment. Include movement and audio similar to the intended stream. YouTube explicitly advises: “Make sure to test before you start a live stream.”
- Check real-time processing. Watch FFmpeg’s reported processing speed and inspect CPU load. If processing falls behind real time, the server cannot reliably sustain that encode configuration.
- Check network and YouTube stream health. Monitor outbound load on the instance and messages in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s streaming tips stress that the total bitrate must fit available upload bandwidth.
- Test transitions and recovery. Observe more than one playlist transition and verify behavior after a restart or connection interruption using your actual setup.
- Adjust one constraint at a time. If speed or stream health is poor, reduce resolution, frame rate, bitrate, or encoding complexity, then repeat the test.
A provider’s advertised CPU or network figure does not by itself establish continuous encode performance. Compare VPS options using measured sustained encode speed, CPU allocation policy, outbound bandwidth and traffic limits, Indian-region availability, reliability, and cost. No universal CPU or RAM threshold is established for this workload.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg processing speed drops below real time | The VPS cannot keep up with the selected resolution, frame rate, or encoding complexity. | Check CPU load; reduce frame rate, resolution, or encoding complexity, then test again. |
| YouTube reports stream-health or bandwidth problems | Total bitrate is too high for sustained outbound capacity, or the connection is unstable. | Check actual VPS outbound load, include audio in the total, reduce bitrate if needed, and preserve 20% upload headroom. |
| The picture looks stretched or has unexpected bars or cropping | The source and target aspect ratios differ, or the scale treatment is not what you intended. | Choose whether to preserve proportions, crop, or pad, then inspect a test output. |
| Picture or sound breaks at playlist transitions | The loop or playlist behavior does not suit the input format, or the files differ in ways the setup does not handle cleanly. | Test the exact files and playlist structure; inspect both video and audio at each transition. |
| The stream stops after a disconnect or process restart | Restart and reconnection behavior has not been configured or validated for this setup. | Test interruption and restart behavior before depending on the stream; monitor FFmpeg and YouTube stream health. |
| The online option does not match the server’s actual FFmpeg behavior | Online documentation may reflect a newer FFmpeg revision than the VPS binary. | Check ffmpeg -version and consult documentation matching the installed build where available. |
