For an FFmpeg server that streams a prerecorded video to YouTube around the clock, compare the exact region’s outbound-traffic allowance and total server cost first, then test FFmpeg on the plan you are considering. Vultr documents 2 TB of monthly free bandwidth per account plus bandwidth allocated to instances hourly, with $0.01/GB for usage beyond the allocated quota. Hetzner lists 20 TB of included traffic for EU CX, CPX and CAX Cloud Servers, while US and Singapore allowances vary by plan. These figures are not directly comparable without matching region, plan and billing terms. Vultr documents its bandwidth allocation; Hetzner’s traffic table gives location- and product-specific amounts.
There is no established head-to-head FFmpeg benchmark or matched current plan-price comparison here, so neither provider can be declared universally cheaper or faster. Model your stream’s egress, check current plan details and public-IP charges, then test the actual encoding or relay workload.
How to choose between Vultr and Hetzner
For a continuous stream, outbound data is often the first cost variable to calculate. The server’s region, CPU and memory, public IP charges, and whether FFmpeg merely relays an encoded file or transcodes it also matter. Provider documentation does not establish a universal performance winner for this workload.
| Comparison | Vultr Cloud Compute | Hetzner Cloud | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Included traffic | Vultr documents 2 TB of free bandwidth per account each month, plus instance bandwidth allocated hourly. Allocation can vary by region. Vultr bandwidth limits | The traffic table lists 20 TB for EU CX, CPX and CAX Cloud Servers. US and Singapore allowances vary by plan. The table was last changed in 2024. Hetzner Cloud traffic table | Check the allowance for the exact server family and location; do not treat either figure as a provider-wide guarantee. |
| Traffic direction | Under the cited policy, outbound transfers count toward bandwidth; inbound traffic is not metered. | Hetzner’s Cloud FAQ says outgoing traffic is billed and incoming and internal traffic are free. Hetzner Cloud billing FAQ | For a one-way feed from your VPS to YouTube, outbound traffic is the key quantity. |
| Traffic over allowance | Vultr documents $0.01/GB beyond the currently allocated quota. Vultr bandwidth overage | The cited Cloud FAQ describes over-usage billing in 100 MB blocks; verify the current price and terms for your selected product. | Estimate monthly egress and price any excess using the live terms for your plan. |
| Billing behavior | Bandwidth accrues hourly, and pricing can vary by region. | Cloud Servers have hourly rates subject to a monthly cap. Charges continue while a server exists even if it is switched off. Hetzner Cloud billing FAQ | Include runtime and deletion behavior in your estimate, not just the advertised server rate. |
| Locations and IPs | Vultr warns that some rates vary by data-center location. Vultr locations | Hetzner lists Cloud locations in Europe, the US and Singapore; public IPs are not included in server prices, and IPv4 carries an additional charge. Its overview was last changed in 2022. Hetzner Cloud overview | Verify current location availability, IP charges and the route to your chosen YouTube ingest region. |
| Performance and availability | No directly comparable FFmpeg benchmark or stream failure rate is established. | No directly comparable FFmpeg benchmark is established. The Cloud SLA describes commercially reasonable efforts toward 99.9% monthly availability, subject to exclusions; this is not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming. Hetzner Cloud Service Agreement | Test your own workload and plan monitoring and recovery; do not infer encode capacity or stream uptime from a plan name. |
Vultr’s cited billing documentation was updated in December 2025. Hetzner’s traffic table dates to 2024 and its Cloud overview to 2022. Confirm current terms before ordering; current matched plan prices and comparable FFmpeg performance are not established by the cited documentation.

How much bandwidth does an FFmpeg YouTube loop use?
Estimate egress from the stream’s configured bitrate and the hours it is sent. A constant 1 Mbps feed transfers about 0.45 GB per hour, or about 324 GB over 30 days of continuous streaming, using decimal gigabytes. A 14 Mbps feed transfers about 6.3 GB per hour, or about 4.54 TB over 30 days. Actual totals vary with bitrate behavior, runtime, protocol overhead and provider accounting.
For an estimate, use: GB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × hours × 0.45. If a backup feed runs at the same time, include its traffic separately. Compare that monthly estimate with the exact plan’s outbound allowance, then calculate the cost of any excess. This illustrates why a larger headline allowance does not alone establish which VPS is cheaper: plan prices, location, IPs and excess-traffic terms also enter the total.

Choose the right FFmpeg workload before choosing compute
Relaying an already encoded video
If FFmpeg reads a video that is already encoded in the format you intend to send and copies its streams rather than re-encoding, the VPS is primarily reading, packaging and transmitting media. This is a different workload from live transcoding, though it still needs enough network capacity and stable access to the source file.
Transcoding or generating video
Changing codec, resolution or frame rate, adding overlays, or generating a composite stream requires more compute than simply relaying encoded audio and video. No comparative Vultr-versus-Hetzner benchmark for these FFmpeg tasks is established, so test the exact codec, resolution and frame rate on a candidate instance before committing to a continuous run.

Set up a continuous YouTube feed responsibly
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the prior 90 days. Enabling a channel’s first live stream can take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance explains the prerequisites.
- Pick a location and plan. Check the current traffic allowance, server price and any public-IP charge for the exact region and server family. Select a plan that can sustain the intended FFmpeg workload; provider plan names alone do not establish encoding performance.
- Prepare the YouTube stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the stream and obtain its stream key and ingest details. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or include it in logs or screenshots.
- Configure FFmpeg for the feed. YouTube accepts RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Select bitrate guidance for the actual codec, resolution and frame rate; YouTube’s H.264 recommendations include 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 8 Mbps for 720p30. These are YouTube recommendations, not proof that a VPS can sustain encoding at those settings. YouTube encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
- Allow upload headroom. YouTube recommends leaving 20% room above the total stream bitrate. Confirm that the VPS network can sustain the feed rather than assuming its advertised transfer allowance guarantees throughput. YouTube streaming tips.
- Test before relying on it. Start a test feed, check the preview in Live Control Room, and monitor audio and video quality continuously. Confirm that the stream key, ingest URL and FFmpeg process behave as expected before leaving a long-running stream unattended.
- Plan for failure. Monitor the FFmpeg process and YouTube preview; decide how you will detect a stalled process, server interruption or dropped ingest and restart or recover the feed. Provider availability figures do not guarantee a live stream will remain connected.
- Check content rights and platform rules. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance includes an example of using a cloud tool for a 24/7 prerecorded-video stream, but it does not mean every loop or content choice is allowed, nor does it guarantee monetization. Use content you have the rights to stream and follow YouTube’s policies. YouTube encoder setup guidance.
YouTube’s guidance covers 24/7 prerecorded streaming as a possible setup, not an assurance that a particular stream will stay live or be monetized.

Common cost and setup mistakes
- Comparing allowances from different regions: Match the exact location and server family. Hetzner’s listed allowances vary between EU, US and Singapore; Vultr also notes regional pricing variation.
- Ignoring a second stream: Add the egress from any concurrently running backup feed to your estimate.
- Using server price as total cost: Check traffic overage, public IP, backups and other selected services. Hetzner says an existing server continues accruing charges when switched off; delete it when it is no longer needed.
- Choosing compute based on a provider label: Test the actual FFmpeg operation. A stream copy and a transcode are not equivalent workloads.
- Assuming the source example approves any content: YouTube’s cloud-tool example is about setup, not permission to stream copyrighted or otherwise disallowed material.
