If FFmpeg keeps disconnecting from a YouTube live stream on a DigitalOcean Droplet, first identify whether the failure is in the YouTube ingest URL or protocol, the FFmpeg process, the Droplet’s network, or an outbound firewall rule. There is no universal reconnect flag: the right fix depends on the output protocol and the exact error. Capture the command and logs before changing settings, then work through the checks below.

Capture the failure before changing anything

A disconnect can mean FFmpeg exited, YouTube rejected or lost the ingest connection, or the Droplet could no longer reach the endpoint. Record enough detail to tell these apart before restarting or changing firewall policy.

  • Record the installed FFmpeg version and build configuration, using ffmpeg -version.
  • Save the complete command and the exact error lines immediately before and after the drop. Redact the stream key before sharing either.
  • Note whether FFmpeg exits, remains running while output stops, or reconnects by itself; also record how long the stream ran before the failure.
  • Record the configured ingest URL and protocol, and whether the same input succeeds locally or from another host.

These observations help distinguish an endpoint or authentication issue from a process exit, a network reset, or blocked egress. Without the command, logs, and firewall configuration, a particular cause cannot be established.

Check that FFmpeg is using the right YouTube ingest endpoint

Compare the URL and stream name in the command with the values YouTube provides for that live stream. The YouTube LiveStreams API documents primary and backup ingest addresses for RTMP and RTMPS, including ingestionAddress, backupIngestionAddress, rtmpsIngestionAddress, and rtmpsBackupIngestionAddress. Use the address appropriate to your selected protocol rather than reusing a hostname or URL from another setup. See YouTube’s LiveStreams API documentation.

Depending on the encoder, YouTube’s stream URL and stream name may need to be combined as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Check how your FFmpeg command handles the key and URL; do not publish the key in logs or troubleshooting posts.

If you use RTMPS

  • Confirm the URL uses the rtmps scheme and points to an endpoint configured for RTMPS.
  • Confirm the connection goes to port 443 and the TLS Server Name Indication (SNI) uses the server hostname.
  • Check for TLS or SSL errors, timeouts, and a mismatch between the endpoint and protocol. Sending cleartext RTMP to an endpoint expecting RTMPS can result in an SSL error or an unhelpful timeout.

YouTube explains the endpoint, port, and SNI requirements in its RTMPS ingestion guide. A wrong endpoint, port, or SNI can produce connection errors even when the stream key is correct.

Do not switch protocols just to chase a reconnect

YouTube supports RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH ingest. RTMPS encrypts RTMP and is an option for ordinary low-latency content. HLS and DASH are encrypted, segment-based alternatives that generally add latency. Before switching, verify that your FFmpeg output supports the target protocol and that its latency and codec requirements suit your stream. YouTube’s ingestion protocol comparison describes the trade-offs.

Use FFmpeg reconnect options only for the protocol they cover

FFmpeg’s reconnect options are not a universal remedy for a YouTube publisher disconnect. The options in its protocol documentation apply to HTTP behavior. They do not establish that adding -reconnect 1 will restore an RTMP or RTMPS output connection.

For an HTTP input or output where the documented behavior applies, FFmpeg lists options including:

  • reconnect: retry after a disconnect before EOF.
  • reconnect_at_eof: treat EOF as an error, which can be useful for live or endless streams.
  • reconnect_on_network_error: retry certain TCP or TLS errors during connection.
  • reconnect_on_http_error: retry for selected HTTP status codes.
  • reconnect_streamed: enable reconnect behavior for streamed, non-seekable inputs.
  • reconnect_delay_max, reconnect_max_retries, and reconnect_delay_total_max: bound delays or retries.
  • respect_retry_after: honor an HTTP Retry-After response when applicable.

Check the installed build’s help and the FFmpeg protocol documentation before using an option. Place protocol options where they apply in your command, and verify the actual input and output protocols. For an RTMP/RTMPS publishing failure, diagnose the endpoint, logs, network, and firewall rather than assuming HTTP retry flags will fix it. If FFmpeg exits, restarting it is a process-supervision problem as well as a connection problem; choose a retry policy based on the observed exit and error, not an unverified one-size-fits-all command.

Inspect both DigitalOcean and host firewall egress

A DigitalOcean Cloud Firewall and a firewall running inside the Droplet are separate controls. Check both. DigitalOcean Cloud Firewalls block traffic that is not permitted by their rules; if no outbound rules are configured, outbound traffic is not permitted. Host firewall rules can also conflict with cloud firewall rules. See DigitalOcean’s guidance on configuring firewall rules and debugging firewall connection problems.

  1. In the DigitalOcean control panel, inspect the firewall attached to the Droplet and review its outbound rules. Confirm they allow the destination, protocol, and port required by the active YouTube ingest endpoint.
  2. Inspect the Droplet’s local firewall. On Ubuntu, DigitalOcean documents sudo ufw status verbose for UFW; for iptables, its example is iptables -L. These are inspection commands, not instructions to replace a production firewall policy.
  3. Compare cloud and host rules with the endpoint you actually use. Do not open unrelated inbound ports to resolve an outbound streaming connection.

DigitalOcean notes that UFW is installed by default on Ubuntu Droplets and recommends it as a user-friendly way to manage host firewall rules. Its firewall troubleshooting guide provides the provider’s diagnostic context.

Correlate network checks with the exact disconnect time

On the Droplet, ip -br a can show whether interfaces are up and what addresses they have. A ping can test reachability, but it uses ICMP: a failed ping does not prove the outbound route to YouTube is down if ICMP is blocked by a cloud firewall. Pair limited tests with FFmpeg’s error lines and checks relevant to the actual ingest destination. DigitalOcean’s network configuration guide describes these checks.

Review DigitalOcean Monitoring’s public outbound bandwidth around the failure. The graphs separate public and private traffic, as well as inbound and outbound traffic, so public outbound is relevant when the Droplet is sending a stream to an external ingest server. A traffic change can help establish when sending stopped, but the graph alone cannot identify the cause. See Droplet Metrics.

Use alerts as supporting evidence

Droplet alerts require DigitalOcean’s metrics agent. DigitalOcean’s alert troubleshooting guidance says the agent needs outbound TCP ports 80 and 443 to report. That requirement is for agent traffic; it is separate from the YouTube ingest traffic used by FFmpeg. See Why are my alerts not working on my Droplets?

Common symptoms and next checks

Symptom What to check next
RTMPS produces an SSL error or times out Verify the RTMPS URL, endpoint, port 443, and hostname used for TLS SNI against YouTube’s ingest details.
FFmpeg says the connection closed, but the process remains running Record the protocol and exact error. Confirm the ingest endpoint first; use HTTP reconnect options only if the relevant connection is HTTP.
FFmpeg exits at the time of the interruption Inspect the last error lines and distinguish a process failure from a network drop. A supervisor may be needed for process restarts, but it will not correct a wrong endpoint or blocked egress.
The stream works locally but not from the Droplet Compare the endpoint and command, then inspect both Cloud Firewall outbound rules and the host firewall. Correlate the test with the Droplet’s network state.
Ping fails Do not treat that alone as proof that YouTube ingest is unreachable; ping uses ICMP, which may be blocked. Check the actual streaming protocol and destination instead.
Outbound bandwidth falls when the stream drops Use the timing as a clue, not a diagnosis. Match it to FFmpeg logs, endpoint checks, and firewall rules.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream from uploaded videos rather than maintaining an FFmpeg process on a Droplet, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps looping from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Every slot streams uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month.
