DigitalOcean Spaces does not provide a documented one-click way to import a video into YouTube Studio or loop that file as a YouTube live stream. These are separate workflows: upload a local file to YouTube for a normal video, use Spaces to store and serve an object by URL, or send a live feed to YouTube through an eligible live-streaming method. The steps below explain what each option does—and where the documented paths stop.
Choose the workflow that matches your goal
| Workflow | What it does | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Studio upload | Imports a video file into YouTube, where you set its details and availability. | The documented Studio flow selects a file from your computer; it does not document importing directly from a Spaces URL. YouTube Help: Upload YouTube videos |
| Spaces object storage and CDN | Stores a file and serves it from a URL; Standard Storage buckets can use the Spaces CDN. | This is file storage and delivery, not evidence that Spaces sends video into YouTube or loops playback. DigitalOcean: Upload Files to Spaces |
| YouTube Live encoder | Sends an encoder’s live feed to a YouTube live stream. | The cited YouTube guidance does not establish how to make an encoder fetch and loop a prerecorded Spaces object. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder |
If your goal is simply to publish a video, use YouTube Studio. If you need a file-hosting URL, use Spaces. If you need a prerecorded video to appear as a continuous live broadcast, you need a separate, supported playback-and-encoder workflow; the storage and YouTube setup pages alone do not provide one.
Upload a video from your computer to YouTube
- Open YouTube Studio, select Create, then Upload videos.
- Select the video file from your computer. YouTube describes this as importing the file into YouTube; this documented flow is not a direct Spaces-URL import.
- Complete the video’s details and choose its visibility. You can upload first and publish later: uploading imports the file, while publishing makes it available for viewers. A successful upload therefore does not necessarily mean the video is publicly watchable.
- Allow YouTube to process the video. YouTube says it converts uploads to the highest resolution available for playback across devices and networks.
For the precise current screens and account-specific options, follow YouTube’s upload instructions.
Upload and serve a video from DigitalOcean Spaces
Upload through the control panel
- In the DigitalOcean control panel, open the Spaces bucket and select the Files tab.
- Choose the upload option, select the file or files, and set the intended permissions.
- Use the browser control panel only for files smaller than 2 GB each and batches of fewer than 100 files, as stated in DigitalOcean’s 2026 documentation. For larger files or batches, use an S3-compatible client or the API. DigitalOcean’s
doctlCLI does not support uploading files to Spaces.
For large objects, multipart upload divides the object into parts that can be retried independently, which improves reliability if an upload is interrupted. See DigitalOcean’s upload documentation for supported upload methods.

Choose access deliberately
Spaces objects are private by default. A public object can be fetched by anyone who has its URL, so do not make sensitive or unauthorized content public. A private object requires authorization; a presigned URL can grant temporary access without making the object public. Object privacy and permission to list a bucket’s files are separate controls. See DigitalOcean’s file-permissions documentation.
Use the CDN when appropriate
For a bucket on Spaces Standard Storage, you can enable the CDN and serve content through its CDN endpoint. DigitalOcean states that the default edge-cache TTL is one hour, so updates may not appear at every edge immediately. Presigned requests are not cached, and Spaces Cold Storage does not support CDN integration. Details: enable the Spaces CDN and Spaces CDN details.

A Spaces URL is an object-delivery address, not a YouTube publishing control. The cited documentation does not show YouTube Studio importing that URL, nor does it show Spaces supplying a looped feed to YouTube Live.
What YouTube Live requires
YouTube’s stated eligibility requirement is a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube lists mobile, webcam, and encoder as live-streaming methods. An encoder sends a feed to YouTube using a stream key; the key is a credential, so keep it private and do not publish it in a video description, public webpage, or shared screenshot. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance and encoder instructions.

Before going live with an encoder, YouTube advises preparing ahead, checking the Live Control Room preview, confirming that the watch page and mobile viewing work, and monitoring audio and video quality. You can set a stream’s visibility to public, private, or unlisted. If DVR is enabled, viewers can pause, rewind, and resume the live stream. See YouTube’s live-stream settings.
Bandwidth and stream settings
YouTube recommends that available upload bandwidth exceed the stream’s total bitrate and advises 20% headroom in its streaming tips. This is YouTube Help guidance, not a guarantee that a particular connection will sustain a stream; allow for other devices and traffic using the same connection. The cited sources do not specify a universal bitrate, resolution, or keyframe interval for the Spaces-to-YouTube workflow, so use the current encoder recommendations that match your chosen resolution and frame rate rather than assuming a single setting fits every stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Can you loop a YouTube video or a Spaces file?
YouTube’s cited loop guidance is specifically about Clips: Clips are 5–60 seconds long and play on a loop from the original video’s watch page. That does not establish a loop control for an ordinary full-length video, or a way to loop a file hosted in Spaces as a YouTube live stream. See YouTube Help: Learn about managing Clips.
To broadcast a prerecorded video as live, a separate system must play the recording and provide a live feed to an encoder, which then sends it to YouTube. Before relying on that arrangement, verify the chosen software’s current instructions for file playback, looping, encoder output, stream-key handling, and recovery. The cited Spaces and YouTube pages do not document a direct Spaces-to-YouTube loop procedure, so this article does not prescribe one.

Copyright and channel checks before broadcasting
Having a file in your Spaces bucket does not by itself establish permission to broadcast it. Confirm that you own or have the rights to every video and audio element, and review YouTube’s current policies and channel status before making a stream public. A visibility choice such as unlisted or private controls who can access a stream; it does not grant rights to the material.
Troubleshooting the documented workflows
- You cannot select a Spaces URL in Studio: the documented YouTube Studio upload flow selects a file from your computer. Download an authorized copy to your computer and use Create → Upload videos; the cited instructions do not describe URL import.
- The control panel rejects a large upload or batch: its documented limits are files smaller than 2 GB and batches fewer than 100 files. Switch to an S3-compatible client or API; for large objects, use multipart upload.
- A private Spaces link does not open for another viewer: private objects require authorization. Use a presigned URL when temporary private access is appropriate, or make only an intended, non-sensitive asset public.
- A Spaces CDN URL still serves an older version: the default edge-cache TTL is one hour, so a cached copy may remain visible until it expires. Presigned requests are not cached by the CDN.
- YouTube Live will not start: check that the channel is verified and has no live restriction in the previous 90 days, then confirm that the encoder is using the intended stream key and that the Live Control Room preview receives a feed.
- The live feed stutters or drops: check available upload capacity against the total stream bitrate and YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom; also check whether other devices are consuming the connection.
- A Clip loops but the full video does not: the cited loop behavior applies to Clips (5–60 seconds), not proof of looping for ordinary videos or Spaces-hosted files.
Or let it run in the cloud
