There is no universal winner between DigitalOcean and Vultr for a continuous YouTube stream. Compare each exact server plan’s outbound-transfer allowance and overage cost against your stream’s bitrate and uptime, then confirm that its compute capacity can handle your encoder. DigitalOcean pools Droplet transfer at the team level and documents a charge for excess outbound data; Vultr uses an account allowance alongside bandwidth allocations that accrue for running instances. Neither provider’s published information establishes which will cost less or run a particular 24/7 workload more reliably.
Start with the workload, not the headline server specs
A server sending a stream to YouTube produces sustained outbound traffic. Estimate the transfer your stream will use over its planned uptime, add headroom for protocol overhead and restarts, and compare that estimate with the allowance and billing terms of the specific plan you would use. Then check whether the server can encode or relay your source without compromising stream health.
YouTube’s recommended bitrate settings vary by resolution and frame rate. Use the settings for your intended stream to calculate transfer; a higher bitrate and more uptime mean more outbound data. This is an estimate, not a guarantee of the exact bill, because actual usage can include overhead and restarts. YouTube’s bitrate settings provide the encoder values to use in your estimate.
How DigitalOcean and Vultr handle bandwidth
| Provider | What its documentation says | What to check for a continuous stream |
|---|---|---|
| DigitalOcean Droplets | Droplet transfer allowances are pooled at the team level. Inbound transfer is free; additional outbound transfer is documented at $0.01 per GiB. DigitalOcean bandwidth documentation | Check the selected Droplet’s included transfer, your team’s total use, and whether the stream would push the pool into billable outbound overage. |
| Vultr instances | Vultr describes a 2 TB monthly free bandwidth allocation per account, with instance bandwidth allocations accruing hourly while instances run. Vultr’s bandwidth-cap explanation | Check the current allocation for the specific instance and how it combines with the account allowance and your other instances. Review the provider’s bandwidth-usage calculation as well. |
These are different billing mechanics, not directly comparable plan quotes. Allowances, available configurations, and prices can change; check the provider’s current plan details before committing. DigitalOcean’s Droplet pricing documentation describes its billing, while Vultr’s allocation rules explain how usage is counted. Do not treat included bandwidth as permission for unlimited outbound streaming.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Compare compute and encoding needs
First decide whether the cloud server must encode or transcode video, or only relay an already encoded source. Encoding can demand substantially different compute capacity from forwarding a prepared stream. Test the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, audio, and scene on the exact configuration before relying on it.
Vultr’s published streaming baseline
Vultr’s Ubuntu streaming-server guide gives a starting configuration of 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB storage, and 3 TB bandwidth for its documented OBS and FFmpeg setup. That is a vendor guide prerequisite, not an independent performance benchmark or a promise of reliable 24/7 operation. Follow the Vultr OBS and Ubuntu guide as a starting recipe, then validate the actual workload.

DigitalOcean’s plan and network details
DigitalOcean offers Droplets across different CPU classes and configurations rather than a streaming-specific recipe. Its ordinary non-GPU Droplets have a documented maximum network throughput limit of 2 Gbps; Premium CPU configurations have a higher limit. This is a network ceiling, not an assurance of sustained application-level encoding performance. Review Droplet features, Droplet limits, and the exact plan’s availability and price before choosing a server.
Build an apples-to-apples cost estimate
- Choose the stream settings. Set resolution and frame rate, then take the corresponding bitrate from YouTube’s encoder settings.
- Estimate outbound transfer. Multiply the selected bitrate by the hours you expect to stream, converting units consistently. Add headroom for protocol overhead and restarts rather than treating the result as an exact bill.
- Apply the provider’s allowance rules. For DigitalOcean, account for the team-level pool and any excess outbound charge. For Vultr, account for the monthly account allocation and the selected instance’s accruing allocation.
- Add the other costs. Include compute, storage, any relevant IP or other line items, and outbound overage. DigitalOcean documents per-second billing, but powering off a bundled CPU Droplet does not stop billing; the Droplet must be destroyed to end charges. Confirm current terms and use each provider’s plan information or calculator for the configuration you intend to run.
- Compare the same workload and period. Use the same region, uptime, source, stream settings, and recovery assumptions for both quotes. Without those inputs and current plan details, a claim that one provider is cheaper would be unsupported.
Configure YouTube and plan for continuous operation
The cloud provider does not change YouTube’s encoder requirements. The encoder needs the YouTube stream URL and stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals no longer than four seconds. Select the bitrate for your resolution and frame rate, and verify the stream health in Live Control Room using representative motion and audio. See YouTube’s encoder setup and encoder settings.

Protect the stream key
Treat the stream key as a password: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your channel. Keep it out of public scripts, screenshots, and shared logs. If it is compromised, reset it through YouTube Studio and update the encoder configuration.
Test recovery, monitoring, and archives
A cloud VM by itself does not ensure an uninterrupted broadcast. Test what happens when the encoder exits, the source becomes unavailable, or the connection to YouTube drops. Set up monitoring and a recovery process, and test them before relying on the stream. YouTube recommends checking the Live Control Room preview, monitoring stream health, and testing failover for events; see its live-streaming tips.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a continuous broadcast that may exceed that length, plan how you will handle archive and stream sessions, and check current Live Control Room behavior rather than assuming one indefinitely archived broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance covers the archive threshold.

Which should you choose?
- DigitalOcean may suit you if a team-level transfer pool works for your account and you want to estimate overage using its documented outbound rate. Include the cost of any transfer above the pool and verify your selected plan.
- Vultr may suit you if its instance allocation and account-level allowance fit your projected traffic, or if you want to begin from its published OBS/Ubuntu setup guide. Treat that guide as a starting point to validate, not a reliability guarantee.
- Choose only after testing if the stream must encode in real time, exceed YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold, or recover automatically from failures. The published information does not establish a controlled, like-for-like provider benchmark or an uptime guarantee for your workload.
