If a prerecorded video freezes during a 24/7 YouTube Live stream, first find out where it stops: the source file, encoder output, YouTube’s incoming stream, or only a viewer’s player. Compare the source and encoder preview with a local recording, then check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health. That evidence points to the right fix; changing bitrate or latency before locating the failure can make diagnosis harder.
Find which part of the stream is freezing
A stream can remain connected while its picture stops advancing. The cause may be the video source, the encoder, an unstable upload, an error in YouTube’s ingest, or playback on one viewer’s device or network. Compare the same moment across the source, encoder preview, local archive, YouTube stream health, and viewer reports.
- Source file or playback: Check the recording outside the live setup. If it freezes there at the same point, the problem is upstream of the encoder.
- Encoder: Look for a freeze in its preview, errors in its status or logs, and unusually high CPU load.
- Local archive: See whether the recording made by the encoder contains the same freeze. YouTube recommends verifying archive files and checking that their file size continues to grow.
- YouTube ingest: Compare the time of the freeze with Live Control Room’s stream-health indicator and error messages.
- Viewer playback: If the source, archive, and stream health are clean, ask affected viewers to try another supported device or network.
Write down the time the symptom occurred. Matching the timestamp across an archive, encoder logs, and YouTube’s health messages is more useful than changing several settings at once.
Diagnose and fix the broadcaster’s setup
1. Check the prerecorded source
Play the file or playlist item directly, outside the live pipeline. Scrub around the reported timestamp and check whether the picture and audio advance normally. If the source itself hangs, replace or repair that file before investigating YouTube: an encoder cannot send frames that its source is not providing.

2. Inspect the encoder and its recording
Watch the encoder preview while the problem is happening, and check its error messages and CPU load. Then review the local archive at the same timestamp. A matching freeze in both preview and archive points toward the source or encoder path. If the preview looks healthy but the stream is not, investigate the outbound connection and YouTube health messages. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the routed audio and video sources, the local archive, and the encoder; if the evidence does not explain the fault, trying another encoder can help isolate it.
For a continuous broadcast, verify not only that an archive exists but that its file size keeps growing and the source keeps advancing. YouTube’s live-event tips also recommend checking preview and archive integrity, testing encoder failover, and monitoring audio and video quality throughout the event. Testing failover before relying on a long-running stream is safer than discovering a backup path does not work during an outage.

3. Read Live Control Room’s stream health
Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and inspect the stream-health indicator and its messages. Note the severity and timestamp, then compare them with the local recording and encoder logs. YouTube describes red errors as critical—they may stop an event starting or cause viewer problems—and yellow errors as moderate, with possible quality degradation. Its error guidance also notes that keyframes not being sent often enough can cause buffering. Treat an error as a clue about the relevant stage, not proof that every freeze has the same cause.
4. Test the upload connection and reduce overload
If the encoder output looks normal but YouTube reports a problem, test the outbound internet connection and contact the ISP if it is poor. Set the stream quality to one the connection can sustain reliably, and run a preflight test using representative movement and audio. A static test image or quiet scene may not expose the same load as the real playlist. Monitor stream health during the broadcast and note whether errors coincide with freezes.

Average upload capacity alone does not guarantee smooth delivery: congestion can interfere even when a connection appears able to carry the average bitrate. Avoid raising quality to chase a visual issue until the connection and health messages support that change.
Choose settings for continuity, not by guesswork
YouTube’s encoder guidance covers protocol, codecs, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframes. Use its recommendations for the specific resolution and frame rate you have selected, and ensure the connection can sustain the resulting stream. There is no single bitrate that fixes every frozen-video problem.

- Quality and bitrate: Choose a quality that is reliable on the actual upload connection, then test it before the stream. If health messages point to delivery trouble, test a lower sustainable quality rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. This is a configuration recommendation, not a guarantee against freezing; use it when checking encoder settings or investigating a keyframe-related health message.
- Latency: Lower latency gives the player less read-ahead buffer, so viewers are more likely to encounter buffering. For a prerecorded 24/7 stream that does not depend on immediate chat interaction, prioritize continuity over the lowest possible delay. YouTube explains the latency trade-off in its guidance on live streaming latency.
Use YouTube’s current instructions for the encoder and stream configuration you actually run: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. Test settings in advance and keep watching the health indicator once live.

If the source, encoder preview, archive, and stream health show no matching fault, troubleshoot playback on the affected viewer’s side. Ask them to try another network and a supported device, open the stream in the YouTube app or at youtube.com, update the browser or device software, and restart the device if needed. If another connection or device plays normally, that points away from the broadcast pipeline.

For TV playback, YouTube says the “Default” broadcast-delay choice is best for minimizing interruptions. “Decrease” lowers delay but is more likely to interrupt playback. Viewers can review YouTube’s steps in Troubleshoot streaming & video issues – Computer.
Use this order when the freeze returns
- Record the timestamp and confirm the source video advances at that point.
- Compare the encoder preview and local archive at the same timestamp; check encoder errors, CPU load, and archive growth.
- Check the Live Control Room health indicator and match its messages to the timestamp.
- If encoder output is healthy, test the upload path and use a quality the connection can reliably sustain.
- If broadcast-side evidence is clean, test viewer playback on another supported device or network.
- Change one relevant setting, then test with representative video and audio while monitoring health.

Use YouTube’s checks as a continuous-monitoring routine
Before an extended run, test the exact source, encoder, connection, and quality you intend to use. During the run, check that the source is advancing, the local archive is growing, and stream health has no new errors.
