A 404 on a YouTube HLS workflow does not identify the cause by itself. First find which request returned it: an encoder uploading HLS to YouTube, a player or CDN requesting a MediaPackage playback manifest or segment, or another hop in between. Those requests go to different hosts and need different fixes. A MediaPackage playback URL is not a YouTube HLS upload URL.
Identify the request that returned 404
Before changing settings, capture the failing request from the encoder log, browser network trace, CDN access log, or service request details. Record the hostname, path, query parameter names, HTTP method, timestamp, response body, and available CDN or proxy headers. Redact stream keys, authorization headers, signed query values, and account identifiers before sharing the information.
A 404 shown by a CDN does not prove that MediaPackage returned it. If your setup permits it, compare the CDN response with a request directly to the origin. Also note whether the failing URL is the top-level manifest, a child playlist, or a media segment; the first failing path narrows the problem.
Determine the direction of the request
- YouTube HLS ingest: the encoder sends playlists and media segments to the HTTPS HLS ingestion URL supplied for the YouTube stream. This is an upload destination, not a playback URL.
- MediaPackage playback: a player or CDN requests a manifest or segment from a MediaPackage origin endpoint. Use the generated endpoint URL and configured manifest name.
- AWS ingest: an upstream encoder or MediaLive sends content into MediaPackage. Its ingest protocol and authentication depend on whether the workflow uses MediaPackage v1 or v2.
YouTube’s setup guidance describes HLS as an ingestion protocol for cases such as HDR streaming or codecs unsupported by RTMP: YouTube Help: Set up an HLS stream.

If a MediaPackage playback request returns 404
Check forced endpoint-error behavior
In MediaPackage v2, inspect the endpoint’s Force endpoint error configuration. AWS documents optional 404 responses for stale or incomplete manifests, missing DRM keys, and slate input. These settings can deliberately signal an origin failover workflow while problematic segments leave the exposed timeline; a 404 in this case may be an expected health signal rather than a missing endpoint. Correlate the time of the response with input interruptions, timeline gaps, key rotation, or slate detection before changing the setting. Compare manifest filters with the request query
Compare the endpoint’s configured manifest filters with the exact query parameters on the failing request. AWS documents a 404 when an endpoint has a manifest filter and the request includes a matching parameter. In a controlled test, remove redundant matching parameters or correct the filter syntax, then request the intended manifest again. Do not broadly strip query parameters: some workflows require them.

Use the generated manifest URL and current name
Copy the URL from the live endpoint details or API output rather than guessing its path. The HLS manifest name is part of the URL. AWS documents index as the default only when no manifest name has been configured. A renamed manifest, recreated endpoint, or stale copied URL can leave a client requesting an obsolete path. See AWS endpoint setup.
Trace the playlist hierarchy
- Request the top-level HLS manifest directly.
- Follow the child playlist URIs it contains.
- Follow the segment URIs in the child playlist.
- Record the first URL in that chain that returns 404, along with its method and response.
If only a segment fails, treat it as a different symptom from a missing top-level manifest. Check whether the upstream is still delivering content and whether the endpoint supports the incoming tracks, container, and codecs. AWS input and output support varies by MediaPackage generation and endpoint type.

Isolate a CDN or proxy
If a CDN or proxy sits in front of the endpoint, compare its response with the origin response and review the intermediary’s cache behavior. A difference indicates the failure may be introduced or retained in the intermediary; a matching origin 404 points you back to endpoint configuration or upstream conditions. The status code alone does not establish which layer generated it.
If the YouTube HLS upload request returns 404
- Copy the current destination. In YouTube Live Control Room, select or create the HLS stream configuration and copy its displayed HLS ingestion URL. Confirm the encoder is using an HLS stream key and URL, not an RTMP destination or a MediaPackage playback endpoint.
- Check the upload requests. Confirm the encoder is sending HLS media playlists and segment files to that destination. YouTube’s HLS specification describes HTTP PUT or POST uploads and the required media-playlist model: YouTube Live Streaming API: HLS ingestion protocol.
- Validate the HLS output. Check playlist type, single-stream and muxed audio/video expectations, HTTPS transport, media/container/codec requirements, sequence numbers, and file naming against YouTube’s current HLS guidance. A correctly formed MediaPackage playback playlist is not automatically a valid upload request to YouTube.
- Verify the active session. Check whether the stream key or session destination was replaced while the encoder retained an older URL. Never include a stream key in public logs or support tickets.
Confirm which MediaPackage generation and ingest mode you use
Do not apply MediaPackage v1 assumptions to v2. AWS documents v2 live input as HLS or CMAF and lists output support by endpoint type; AV1 support is limited to CMAF endpoint types. MediaPackage v1 has different input and output requirements, including WebDAV with digest authentication and unencrypted media segments for its HLS input. Check the documentation for the generation and endpoint type actually configured: AWS Elemental MediaPackage user guide.

For a MediaLive-to-MediaPackage v2 workflow, AWS currently recommends the MediaPackage output group configured for CMAF Ingest for new workflows: AWS: Creating a MediaPackage output group. That recommendation applies to the MediaLive-to-MediaPackage leg. It does not turn a MediaPackage output URL into a YouTube upload destination.

- MediaPackage generation (v1 or v2), AWS region, and channel or endpoint identifiers, with secrets removed.
- Exact failing host and path, with sensitive query values redacted but parameter names preserved.
- HTTP method, timestamp, status, response body, and relevant response or CDN headers.
- Encoder output configuration and source/output media characteristics.
- Whether the request passed through a CDN or proxy, and whether a direct-origin request produces the same result.
