An “encoding overloaded” warning means your encoder or its host is struggling to render or encode the stream on time; it does not, by itself, prove that your Amazon EC2 instance needs an upgrade. First distinguish encoding or rendering lag from dropped frames caused by the connection to YouTube, then reduce workload or change settings one step at a time. Increase EC2 capacity only if measurements identify host resources as the bottleneck.
Identify what is actually failing
Record the exact warning and when it occurs. “Encoding overloaded,” rendering lag, dropped frames, reconnects, and YouTube Live Control Room errors point to different parts of the stream path. Do not use “dropped frames” as a catch-all for stutter: OBS associates dropped frames and disconnections with an unstable or insufficient connection between the encoder and the remote ingest server. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide explains that distinction.
- Encoding overload or rendering lag: investigate the encoder’s workload, settings, and host resources.
- Dropped frames or disconnections: investigate the outbound network path to YouTube’s ingest server.
- YouTube stream-health errors: check the encoder output, ingest settings, and YouTube’s reported issue rather than assuming the EC2 CPU is at fault.
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking encoder errors and CPU load, reviewing the output in the encoder or a local archive, and testing outbound connection strength. CPU usage is useful evidence, but it does not identify every possible bottleneck by itself.
Work through the diagnosis in order
- Reproduce the issue and observe the encoder. Note the warning, encoder performance indicators, host load, and whether the problem appears during complex scenes or particular content. YouTube recommends checking encoder errors and CPU load and inspecting the stream directly in the encoder or local archive.
- Reduce encoding and rendering demand one change at a time. If your quality requirements permit, lower output resolution or frame rate. Simplify scenes, sources, and filters, and close only workloads you know are unnecessary. Retest after each change with representative movement and audio. OBS identifies resolution, frame rate, and scene/source complexity as factors that affect resource demand. See OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide.
- Check whether hardware encoding is genuinely available. A compatible hardware encoder can move work from the CPU to a specialized component in a GPU, but do not select a hardware option merely because it appears in advice for another system. Verify that your EC2 instance, operating system, drivers, and encoder can access a supported device. Availability depends on the specific environment. See OBS’s hardware encoding guide.
- Check YouTube’s ingest settings. Match the codec and bitrate to the output resolution and frame rate, and use the recommended rate-control and keyframe settings below. A correct bitrate helps meet ingest requirements; it does not prove that the host can encode the chosen output in real time.
- Test the network separately. If the encoder output looks and sounds healthy but frames are dropping or the stream disconnects, investigate outbound connectivity to the ingest service. YouTube recommends testing outbound connection strength; OBS describes connection drops as trouble along the route from the encoder to the remote ingest server. Use YouTube’s troubleshooting steps and OBS’s connection guide.
- Assess EC2 capacity using the evidence. If the encoder and host observations point to insufficient resources after configuration and workload checks, evaluate whether a different instance configuration is warranted. Consider the encoder and codec, output resolution and frame rate, scene complexity, access to compatible hardware encoding, and the measured bottleneck. There is no evidence-based universal EC2 instance size for an unspecified streaming workload.
Use YouTube settings that match your stream
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no interval longer than four seconds. It lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, and AV1 options; available choices and recommended bitrates vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings for the row that matches your actual output rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.

For H.264 ingestion, YouTube lists these recommended bitrates:
| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps |
| 2160p60 (4K) | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p30 (4K) | 42 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingestion values, not a guarantee that a particular EC2 configuration can encode the stream. YouTube provides different values for AV1 and H.265. Test before the event with movement and audio similar to the planned stream, and monitor stream health. YouTube’s guidance says: “Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”

When changing EC2 capacity may help
Do not choose an instance family or size from the overload message alone. First establish whether the observed problem is encoding, rendering, I/O, or network-related, and whether reducing the workload or using an actually available hardware encoder changes the result.
AWS Elemental Live documentation discusses insufficient CPU, I/O bandwidth, and network ingestion as possible causes of performance problems in that product. It also explains that resolution, frame rate, bitrate, color depth, codec, and other settings affect pixels processed per second, and that codecs can differ in CPU demand. This is useful context, not an OBS-on-EC2 sizing recommendation: the guide is specifically about Elemental Live and does not identify a suitable EC2 instance for your encoder. See the AWS Elemental Live User Guide.

Troubleshoot common symptoms
- “Encoding overloaded” appears during complex scenes. Reduce resolution or frame rate if acceptable, simplify scenes and sources, or remove costly filters; change one variable and retest. OBS recommends freeing resources and reducing output workload when it cannot keep up.
- CPU use looks low, but the stream still stutters. Do not treat one CPU reading as a complete diagnosis. Check the encoder’s own performance indicators and whether the issue is rendering, encoding, or connection-related; inspect the output and YouTube’s stream-health errors.
- Frames drop or the stream reconnects, but encoding appears healthy. Test outbound connectivity to YouTube’s ingest service rather than immediately increasing compute. OBS classifies dropped frames as a connection issue between the encoder and ingest server.
- YouTube reports a stream configuration problem. Confirm codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR, keyframe interval, and the bitrate row for that codec and output. Refer to YouTube’s error-message guidance and its encoder settings.
- The hardware encoder option is missing or fails. Confirm that the specific EC2 instance and software environment expose a supported device and that the required drivers are available. Hardware encoding is not a universal option across EC2 configurations.
- The warning remains after reducing output demand. Compare encoder behavior and host measurements under a representative test, then determine whether the host is the limiting factor. AWS Elemental Live’s discussion of CPU, I/O, and network input describes that product; it does not establish a universal remedy or EC2 size for other encoders.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded video playing live on YouTube rather than troubleshoot an encoder running on EC2, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no home computer or connection has to stay on. Each slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. Start the free day on StreamNeo.
