Wowza Streaming Engine nDVR records a live input and enables rewind playback through Wowza-served HLS or MPEG-DASH. YouTube has its own live DVR controls for viewers on YouTube. The available documentation does not establish that Wowza’s nDVR settings control rewind in the YouTube player—or specify the exact Wowza-to-YouTube ingest route. First identify whether you use Wowza Streaming Engine or Wowza Video, then verify the current ingest procedure and the destination where viewers will play the recording.
What Wowza nDVR does—and what it does not establish for YouTube
Wowza nDVR is a recording and time-shift feature for a live stream served through Wowza. In Wowza Streaming Engine, it records the incoming live stream and supports DVR playback using HLS or MPEG-DASH. Its documented DVR controls and playback URLs apply to Wowza playback; documentation does not say those controls pass through to a YouTube destination. Wowza Streaming Engine nDVR setup
YouTube Live DVR is a separate viewer feature. YouTube says viewers can pause, rewind, and resume a live stream when live DVR is enabled. If the creator disables it, viewers cannot seek backward during the live broadcast; a recording may still be available after the stream ends. YouTube: Enable or disable DVR on a live stream
So, if your viewers watch on YouTube, check YouTube’s live DVR setting rather than assuming Wowza’s rewind window governs YouTube playback. If viewers watch a Wowza HLS or MPEG-DASH output, configure and test Wowza nDVR for that destination separately.

Identify the Wowza product and playback destination
The procedure differs by product. Do not apply Streaming Engine application settings to Wowza Video, or treat Wowza Video’s playlist setting as a Streaming Engine DVR URL option.
| Product or destination | What the documentation establishes | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Wowza Streaming Engine | Enable nDVR on a live application; configure recording and playback behavior. DVR playback is documented for HLS and MPEG-DASH, not RTMP or RTSP. Wowza setup guide | Engine version and license, application settings, source compatibility, DVR playback URL, storage and reconnect behavior. |
| Wowza Video | A Wowza CDN stream target has a Playlist Seconds setting that determines rewind depth. The documented range is 6–28,800 seconds (8 hours), with a documented default of 100 seconds. Player support varies; Wowza says nDVR does not work with Wowza Player. Wowza Video nDVR configuration Wowza Video stream targets API | That your stream target and intended player support the setting, and that the selected destination is the one viewers will use. |
| YouTube playback | YouTube has its own live DVR feature. The available Wowza documentation does not establish that nDVR settings control YouTube’s player. | YouTube’s DVR setting and the current Wowza-to-YouTube ingest procedure for your product. |
Configure nDVR in Wowza Streaming Engine
These steps cover the documented Streaming Engine workflow for a live application and Wowza playback. They do not specify a YouTube ingest endpoint, stream-key procedure, or encoder profile; confirm those using current instructions for your deployment before scheduling a broadcast.

- Check version, license, and source. Wowza’s documentation specifies Streaming Engine 4.7.6 or later for MPEG-DASH nDVR. Wowza says perpetual and subscription licenses enable integrated nDVR; older licenses purchased before 2015 may require contacting Wowza. Confirm current requirements for your installation. Setup guide nDVR quick-start Wowza licensing
- Open the live application’s nDVR settings. In Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, select the live application, open nDVR, and enable it. Restart the application or Engine as the Manager prompts.
- Choose recording storage and the rewind window. Set the DVR store directory and recording/playback behavior. The “All material available” option makes the entire recording available and preserves it after the stream ends. “Use window duration” exposes a rolling window and purges older material outside that period; the documented minimum window is 60 seconds. Decide whether playback URLs require the DVR query parameter and whether the application supports both live and DVR streaming. Save settings and restart to apply them.
- Use the XML method only if you manage configuration directly. Wowza’s documented alternative requires the DVR recorder and store settings plus the DVR streaming packetizer, alongside packetizers for the output protocols. Follow the configuration reference for the installed version rather than copying partial XML into a different configuration.
- Publish a compatible live source and test playback. Start with a basic live stream, then confirm recording and DVR playback using HLS or MPEG-DASH. Include the DVR query parameter in the playback URL if the application requires it. RTMP and RTSP do not support Wowza nDVR playback in the setup guide.
Check codec, synchronization, and 24/7 operations
Source compatibility
Wowza says nDVR needs aligned audio and video in the incoming stream; short keyframe intervals and aligned audio/video work best. Its quick-start lists H.264 video, AAC audio, and MP3 audio among supported stream types/codecs. Unsupported source codecs can prevent recording; transcoding may be an option when supported for the ingest. Validate the actual source and resulting playback instead of assuming a file or encoder profile will work. Wowza nDVR quick-start Wowza nDVR configuration
Reconnects, retention, and storage
Wowza warns that recording may be interrupted when the live source disconnects. Its documentation describes a default stream timeout of five minutes to accommodate encoder disconnects and restarts. For a continuous channel, test the behavior with your actual encoder and application, and plan how you will monitor the source, retain recordings, and provide enough disk capacity. The available documentation does not give a general storage-capacity formula or establish uninterrupted delivery for a particular 24/7 YouTube setup.

Validate the whole route before going live
- Confirm whether the running product is Wowza Streaming Engine or Wowza Video.
- Confirm whether viewers will watch YouTube or a Wowza HLS/MPEG-DASH player; test DVR at that destination.
- Check YouTube live DVR separately if viewers need to rewind on YouTube.
- Verify source codec and audio/video alignment, then test an actual recording and playback.
- Test disconnect, reconnect, recording continuity, retention, and storage under the chosen deployment.
- Confirm the current YouTube ingest procedure, including endpoint, stream-key workflow, encoding profile, and reconnect guidance, with the relevant current service documentation. These specifics are not established by the Wowza nDVR references cited here.
