To compare costs fairly, calculate the PC’s added electricity expense from its measured average wall draw, monthly streaming hours, and your local marginal electricity rate. Then price a cloud service that performs the same job for the same hours. A remote cloud PC that sends a stream to YouTube is not the same as a managed service that delivers video to viewers, so do not compare their bills as if they were equivalent.
Calculate the PC’s monthly electricity cost
Use the PC’s average power draw at the wall while it is doing the actual streaming workload—not the wattage printed on its power supply. A gaming PC’s draw can change substantially depending on the game, graphics settings, encoder, and whether it is also rendering or recording.
Monthly PC electricity cost ≈ average wall draw in kW × monthly streaming hours × applicable marginal electricity rate in ₹/kWh.
- Measure average wall draw in watts during a representative stream, ideally with a plug-in energy meter. If you cannot measure it, use an estimate and label it as such; do not treat a PSU’s rated capacity as the PC’s measured consumption.
- Estimate how many hours the PC will stream in a typical month.
- Find the marginal energy rate that applies to your household’s location, utility, consumer category, and relevant usage slab. Check your current bill or tariff schedule.
- Convert watts to kilowatts, multiply by hours to get kWh, then multiply by the applicable ₹/kWh rate.
For example, if your measured average draw is W watts, your streaming time is H hours, and your marginal rate is R rupees per kWh, then monthly energy use is (W ÷ 1,000) × H kWh and the energy charge is that result × R. Enter your own readings rather than relying on a generic monthly total.

Use the marginal tariff, not an assumed national rate
There is no single household electricity rate for all of India. The Central Electricity Authority’s March 2026 tariff compilation illustrates the variation: for Chandigarh domestic consumers, it lists energy charges of 275 paise/kWh for 0–150 kWh/month and 480 paise/kWh for 151–400 kWh/month, plus a ₹30/kW/month fixed charge, under the tariff stated as effective 1 August 2024. This is an example for a particular place, category, and tariff date—not a current rate to apply to every household. Check your local tariff order and bill. The Ministry of Power says retail electricity tariffs are determined by the appropriate electricity regulatory commissions, and state governments may subsidize some consumer classes. Your bill may also include slabs, fixed or demand charges, electricity duty, and adjustment mechanisms. Count only charges that the added PC load actually changes; do not automatically assign the whole household fixed charge to streaming. Ministry of Power press releases

Make sure the PC setup can sustain the stream
An electricity estimate is useful only if the proposed stream is technically viable. YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Its recommended video bitrate for 1080p at 30 fps is 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 14 Mbps for H.264. Recommendations depend on resolution, frame rate, and codec; consult the current table for your exact output. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingestion. Your upload connection must support the stream’s total outgoing bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload bandwidth headroom, testing upload speed, and using a reliable network. That matters when comparing a home PC with a cloud machine: include the cost of an internet connection or cloud network capacity only where it is an incremental cost for that setup.

Identify what “cloud streaming” means
Cloud fees cannot be compared meaningfully until you name the workload. A cloud virtual machine or remote PC that encodes a creator’s stream and sends it to YouTube is different from a managed video platform that ingests, transcodes, packages, and distributes a live event to viewers. YouTube itself handles viewer-side transcoding for a stream sent to its live ingestion service; it says it creates multiple output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. An AWS guide gives an illustrative cost of approximately $69.74 for a one-hour 540p live event with approximately 1,000 viewers, including encoding/packaging and distribution. That is a scoped hosted-delivery example, not the price of a cloud PC for sending a creator stream to YouTube, nor an India-specific monthly quote. AWS live streaming guidance

Build a like-for-like cloud estimate
For the exact cloud product and region, price the resources needed to run the same stream for the same monthly hours and at the required resolution and frame rate. Confirm the machine can encode the chosen format and sustain the upload to YouTube if YouTube is the destination.
- Workload: remote VM/PC encoder, managed ingest and transcoding, or full viewer delivery.
- Runtime: hours streamed, idle time, minimum billing increments, and whether the service charges while stopped.
- Compute: instance size and any required accelerator or encoding capacity.
- Storage: persistent disks and uploaded media storage.
- Network: transfer or egress charges, including any delivery to viewers.
- Other charges: managed encoding or delivery fees and applicable taxes.
Use the provider’s current calculator or quote for that region and workload. The available AWS event example does not establish a general cloud-PC price, and no conclusion that cloud is cheaper follows without the actual service, performance, runtime, and included network and storage costs.

Compare the total cost and operating fit
Put the estimated monthly incremental PC energy charge beside the full monthly cloud quote for the equivalent workload. Then consider differences that affect the decision even if the totals are close:
- Home power and internet: a PC stream depends on your home equipment, electricity, and uplink. A cloud encoder depends on the provider’s resources and a workable connection to the destination.
- Control: a local PC may give you direct control over game, encoder, and files; a remote instance may require setup and remote access.
- Reliability needs: consider what happens during home power or network interruptions, and what recovery features the chosen cloud service actually includes. Do not assume a cloud setup is more reliable without evidence for that service.
- Always-on operation: include all hours and any idle billing if you need a continuous stream, not just the time you actively monitor it.
For a practical estimate, record average measured watts, typical monthly streaming hours, the applicable marginal tariff and slab, then obtain a named cloud service’s regional quote with compute, storage, network, and tax charges included. Compare those totals only after confirming both options can produce the required output.
