Wowza Streaming Engine vs. FFmpeg for Looping YouTube Videos

FFmpeg can send a prerecorded file directly to YouTube Live; Wowza Streaming Engine fits a wider server workflow, while Wowza Video is a separate managed option.

For looping one prerecorded video on YouTube Live, FFmpeg is the direct self-managed encoder; Wowza Streaming Engine is not required unless you need its media-server role in a wider workflow. Wowza Video is a separate managed service with its own file-loop feature. The right choice depends on whether you want to operate an encoder, already rely on Wowza Streaming Engine, or prefer a managed cloud workflow.

What each option does

Option Role in the workflow What to weigh
FFmpeg A command-line encoder that reads a media file and sends an encoded stream to a destination. You manage the command, the machine running it, and monitoring.
FFmpeg with Wowza Streaming Engine FFmpeg sends its output into a configured Wowza live application, which is part of a Wowza-centered server workflow. Useful when that server workflow is needed; it adds Engine configuration and monitoring.
Wowza Video A distinct managed service that downloads a source file when a live stream or transcoder starts. Playback is once by default; an advanced transcoder property can enable continuous looping. A loop overrides the transcoder idle timeout. It continues running and accumulating charges until manually stopped; a schedule can be used to stop it.

The available product documentation does not establish a universal price, reliability, or performance winner between these options.

Loop a file with FFmpeg

Before you start

  • Install FFmpeg on a computer or server that can remain running for the intended broadcast.
  • Prepare the video and audio you have rights to stream. Check YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies before broadcasting; the encoder settings alone do not determine whether repetitive content is eligible or compliant.
  • In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select a stream. Copy its server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password.
  • Check that the file’s codecs and dimensions are supported by your chosen FFmpeg build and that your connection can sustain the selected output bitrate.

Run a basic loop

  1. Choose the input. Replace input.mp4 with the local file path. The -stream_loop -1 input option tells FFmpeg to repeat the input indefinitely; -re reads it at its native playback rate rather than sending the file as fast as possible.
  2. Set the destination. Replace YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY with the RTMPS server URL and key shown in Live Control Room. Keep the key private and do not paste a command containing it into public logs or support posts.
  3. Start FFmpeg. This template encodes video as H.264 and audio as AAC, then sends an FLV stream to YouTube. Confirm that your FFmpeg build supports the chosen encoders.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 14M -maxrate 14M -bufsize 28M -r 30 -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv "YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"

The 14 Mbps video bitrate is YouTube’s current recommended H.264 example for 1080p30, not a universal setting. Match bitrate to your resolution, frame rate, codec, and actual upload capacity using YouTube’s current encoder table. This example uses a two-second GOP at 30 fps; YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. Use a frame rate no higher than 60 fps under the current guidance, and use constant bitrate (CBR) for the output.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For a file already encoded to suitable settings, stream-copying instead of re-encoding may reduce CPU use, but only if its codecs, bitrate, frame rate, keyframes, audio, and container are compatible with the destination. The command above re-encodes to make its output settings explicit. Test with a representative section of the actual program before relying on a long-running broadcast.

Check the YouTube stream

  1. In Live Control Room, confirm that YouTube receives the encoder signal and reports healthy stream status.
  2. Watch the preview and listen for audio, checking motion-heavy scenes as well as quiet or dark sections.
  3. Keep the FFmpeg process and host running. If the process exits or the machine loses power or connectivity, the feed stops; inspect the terminal output and restart the command after correcting the underlying issue.
  4. When ending the broadcast, stop FFmpeg and end the live stream in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that threshold is platform guidance, not a guarantee that every stream will be archived or retained indefinitely.

When Wowza Streaming Engine belongs in the chain

Use the Engine workflow when you specifically need FFmpeg’s output to enter a configured Wowza live application as part of a broader server setup. Wowza’s documented FFmpeg pattern is ffmpeg [input-options] -i [input-file] [output-options] [output-stream-URI]. Its restream guidance uses -re so a file is read at its native frame rate, simulating a live source and helping mitigate buffering and memory buildup.

In that arrangement, configure the Engine live application and the incoming stream’s file URI as required by the Engine workflow, then point FFmpeg’s output at the destination stream URI. This is a server-mediated pipeline, not evidence that Engine is required for an ordinary file-to-YouTube stream. You still need to configure and monitor the FFmpeg process and the Wowza application.

Choose based on workflow, not an assumed price winner

  • Choose direct FFmpeg if you want the shortest self-managed path from a file to YouTube and are comfortable maintaining a command-line process and always-on host.
  • Add Wowza Streaming Engine if your deployment needs its media-server workflow. Do not add it solely because a video is being looped; the reviewed documentation does not establish it as a universal requirement.
  • Consider Wowza Video if you prefer its managed service workflow and file-loop property. Account for the fact that continuous looping overrides idle timeout and that the transcoder must be stopped manually or by schedule to stop charges.
