You can install OBS Studio on an Ubuntu DigitalOcean Droplet and connect it to YouTube Live, but installation alone does not prove the Droplet can encode your stream reliably. OBS says performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity, and the available guidance does not validate a Droplet size for live encoding. Treat this as a workload-specific setup: secure the server, install OBS, connect YouTube, then test the exact stream you plan to run before relying on it.

Before you begin: understand the cloud-encoding limitation

A Droplet is a remote computer, not a ready-made OBS appliance. OBS on Linux requires OpenGL 3.3 and an X Window System or Wayland environment; you must also arrange a supported graphical desktop and confirm which graphics and encoding options the virtualized host exposes. The available documentation does not establish a validated headless OBS procedure, guarantee a virtual GPU or hardware encoder on a standard Droplet, or document a webcam and microphone path from your local computer to the remote server.

OBS Project puts the compatibility caveat plainly: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” Its System Requirements page says CPU requirements vary considerably with encoder, resolution, FPS and scene complexity. Do not treat any generic Droplet size as an OBS recommendation.

Check the current OBS installation guidance and the release actually offered for your Ubuntu image before combining a specific OBS major version with a specific Ubuntu release. An OBS Project announcement dated June 19, 2026 says OBS Studio 33 will no longer support Ubuntu 24.04; that version-specific announcement is not a substitute for checking current release compatibility.

1. Create and secure the Ubuntu Droplet

  1. Select an Ubuntu image. Choose a current Ubuntu LTS release. DigitalOcean recommends current Ubuntu LTS for a production-ready Droplet.
  2. Use SSH keys and a non-root account. Configure SSH-key access and create a non-root account with sudo privileges rather than doing routine administration as root.
  3. Set firewall rules carefully. DigitalOcean recommends a cloud firewall that permits inbound SSH and allows outbound traffic. OBS needs outbound access to YouTube’s ingest service, so do not block the connection required to send the live stream.
  4. Enable operational safeguards. Consider backups and monitoring before configuring the stream. See DigitalOcean’s production-ready Droplet setup.
  5. Choose resources by testing, not by guesswork. DigitalOcean describes shared and dedicated CPU families, but does not publish OBS performance results for them. Its generic command example using 2 vCPU and 2 GB RAM is not an OBS sizing recommendation. Start with a workload-specific trial and monitor the actual CPU and stream health.

2. Install OBS Studio on Ubuntu

The OBS Project’s Linux installation page documents the Ubuntu PPA and apt route for Ubuntu 18.04 or newer. The page is dated August 26, 2021, so verify that its package path and your Ubuntu release remain compatible before proceeding.

  1. Connect to the Droplet with SSH using the non-root sudo account you configured.
  2. Arrange access to a supported graphical desktop on the Droplet. The sources do not document a specific remote-desktop setup, so confirm that your chosen desktop provides X Window System or Wayland and that OBS can access OpenGL 3.3.
  3. Run the OBS installation commands documented by the OBS Project:
    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:obsproject/obs-studio
    sudo apt install obs-studio
  4. Open OBS in the graphical session and confirm that the installed build starts and presents the encoder options available on this host. Do not assume hardware encoding will be available just because OBS is installed.

For the package route and Linux prerequisites, consult OBS Linux Installation and OBS System Requirements.

3. Enable YouTube Live and connect OBS

  1. Enable live streaming if needed. YouTube says first-time live-streaming enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do this well before a planned broadcast.
  2. Create or select a stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or select an existing one. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  3. Copy the ingest URL and stream key. Enter the stream URL and key in OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel. Reset it if it is exposed. YouTube explains stream controls in Manage live stream settings.
  4. Prefer RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection to Google’s servers. Select it where the installed OBS build and YouTube stream configuration make it available.
  5. Keep the stream key private. Do not paste it into public logs, screenshots, code repositories or support posts. If you believe it has been compromised, reset it in YouTube’s live-stream settings and update OBS with the replacement.

4. Choose a YouTube encoder starting point

YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, gives the following H.264 recommended bitrates. These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not proof that a particular Droplet can encode or upload that workload. The support page does not display a publication year.

Output YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps

In OBS, configure the selected output to use the corresponding resolution and frame rate, then set the bitrate and encoder options to match YouTube’s recommendations. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Its encoder guide lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, but the practical choice depends on what your OBS build and virtualized host expose. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate and resolution guidance for the current details.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Choose a conservative starting resolution and frame rate if you are uncertain about capacity. Higher output settings can demand more from both encoding and the outbound connection; the official bitrate table does not certify that a given Droplet can sustain them.

5. Test the actual stream before depending on it

  1. Set the YouTube broadcast to private or unlisted for a test, as appropriate for your channel.
  2. Use the same OBS scene, sources, motion and audio conditions intended for the real broadcast. A simple static scene is not a representative test if your planned stream has more complex scenes.
  3. Start streaming from OBS and watch YouTube’s stream-health messages in Live Control Room. Check for encoding or connection warnings rather than judging success only by whether the preview appears.
  4. Monitor the Droplet’s resource usage during the test. If encoding is unstable, reduce resolution or frame rate and test again, or reassess the architecture. This is a practical response to OBS’s stated workload variability, not a tested Droplet sizing formula.
  5. Only schedule or rely on the broadcast after a representative test remains stable for the duration and conditions you need.

Copyright, reused material and channel rules

OBS and a working stream key do not grant rights to broadcast the video, music, game footage or other material in a scene. Use material you have permission to stream, and check YouTube’s current policies for copyright and reused content before building a recurring broadcast around recordings or loops. Technical setup cannot guarantee that a channel or individual stream will satisfy YouTube’s policies.

Common problems and what to check

  • You cannot start a first live broadcast: live streaming may not yet be enabled for the channel. YouTube says first-time enablement can take up to 24 hours; enable it in advance.
  • YouTube does not receive the stream: check that OBS has the correct stream URL and current key, that the key has not been reset, and that the Droplet firewall permits outbound traffic.
  • The key may have leaked: reset it in YouTube’s live-stream settings, then replace the saved key in OBS.
  • OBS fails to open or its display is unavailable: confirm the Droplet has a supported graphical environment using X Window System or Wayland and meets the Linux OpenGL 3.3 requirement. A standard cloud VM is not guaranteed to expose the graphics configuration OBS needs.
  • The stream starts but encoding or stream health is poor: the Droplet may not sustain the chosen encoder, resolution, frame rate or scene complexity. Check resource use and YouTube health messages; lower resolution or frame rate and repeat the representative test.
  • The installed OBS package and Ubuntu release do not match: verify the current OBS release and installation guidance for that Ubuntu version. In particular, the OBS Project’s June 19, 2026 announcement concerns OBS Studio 33 and Ubuntu 24.04 compatibility.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream, rather than operate a remote OBS desktop, StreamNeo is a simpler cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps it running without a computer or home connection left on, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and plays uploads at their original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams made from uploaded videos, not live camera input. Read about StreamNeo or start the free first day.
