How to Restart an AWS Elemental MediaLive Channel Automatically After a Failure

MediaLive can recover a failed pipeline while running, but an idle channel needs an explicit start. Here’s how to automate that safely with EventBridge.

Short answer: MediaLive can recover a failed encoder pipeline while its channel is already running, but it does not automatically restart a channel that has stopped and reached IDLE. To start an idle channel automatically, route a MediaLive state-change event through Amazon EventBridge to a handler that checks the channel’s current state and, if your policy allows it, calls the MediaLive StartChannel operation. EventBridge delivery is best-effort, so this is an event-driven recovery workflow—not a guarantee that every failure will trigger a restart.

First identify what failed

“Restart after a failure” can describe three different problems. The right response depends on whether the failure is upstream of MediaLive, affects one of its encoder pipelines, or leaves the entire channel stopped.

Failure Relevant response What it does—and does not do
Upstream source or path into MediaLive Automatic input failover, if supported inputs are configured as a failover pair Switches processing to the standby input when configured failure conditions occur. It is not a whole-channel restart. AWS: Automatic input failover
One MediaLive encoder pipeline Channel pipeline redundancy and MediaLive’s recovery behavior Redundant pipelines are intended to protect against a pipeline failure. A channel may enter RECOVERING while MediaLive restarts a pipeline. This is distinct from starting an idle channel. AWS: Standard-channel pipeline redundancy
The entire channel is stopped and IDLE An external, event-driven start workflow Your automation must decide whether a start is safe and then explicitly start the channel. MediaLive does not automatically start a stopped channel. AWS: Starting the channel

Do not treat a channel-wide stop/start as a continuity guarantee. The documented behavior establishes how to request a start, not a universal recovery time or uninterrupted output.

Understand the channel states before automating

MediaLive state is the key to avoiding a second action while the service is already working. In particular, a pipeline in recovery is not the same as a stopped channel.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • IDLE: the channel is not running. This is the state an automatic-start policy may act on.
  • RECOVERING: one or both pipelines failed and MediaLive is restarting them. Do not issue a whole-channel start just because this event arrived.
  • STARTING and STOPPING: transitional states. Wait for a stable state rather than issuing a conflicting or duplicate action.
  • RUNNING: the channel is running. A state-change notification alone is not a reason to start it again.

AWS’s documented rule is: “You must always start a channel manually. The channel never starts automatically except when it is already running and attempts to recover from a failure.” AWS Elemental MediaLive User Guide: Starting the channel

Build an EventBridge-to-start workflow

The pattern is to use an EventBridge event as a signal, then have a handler verify the channel’s live state before it calls the start operation. AWS documents the event source and format; the checks, retry handling, logging, and recovery policy below are operational design recommendations, not a policy AWS mandates for every channel.

  1. Create a narrowly scoped EventBridge rule. Match source aws.medialive and detail type MediaLive Channel State Change. Narrow the pattern to the intended channel resource or ARN and the actionable state, such as IDLE, rather than sending every state change for every channel to the same recovery action. AWS: Events from AWS services
  2. Route matching events to a handler. AWS Lambda is one suitable target. The event example includes detail.state, detail.channel_arn, and detail.pipelines_running_count; the channel identifier can be taken from the ARN or channel ARN field. AWS: MediaLive events in EventBridge
  3. Check current state, not just the event snapshot. Have the handler query the channel’s current state before acting. Proceed only if it is actually idle and your recovery policy authorizes an automatic start. An event that reports RECOVERING, STARTING, STOPPING, or RUNNING should not cause a start request.
  4. Call the start operation only for an idle channel. Use the MediaLive StartChannel API operation or its equivalent in your AWS SDK. RestartChannelPipelines is a separate operation for a channel that is currently running; it is not the operation for starting a stopped channel. AWS: RestartChannelPipelines
  5. Log the decision and outcome. Record the event, state observed by the handler, whether a start was attempted, and the API result. Make handling safe to retry so duplicate event delivery or a retried invocation does not create competing actions.
  6. Plan for missed events. AWS describes MediaLive service-event delivery through EventBridge as best-effort. If missing a notification is unacceptable, alert on a channel that remains idle or periodically reconcile channel state in addition to using the event trigger. AWS: Events from AWS services

Check inputs and schedules before enabling unattended starts

A successful start request does not guarantee that the source is ready or that playback resumes at the point viewers expect. Validate the channel’s inputs and schedule as part of the recovery design.

  • Push inputs: The source must already be pushing before the channel starts. If the upstream sender waits for the channel to come online before it starts sending, define how that dependency is resolved before enabling automatic starts.
  • Scheduled inputs: For a channel with multiple inputs, MediaLive selects the input based on schedule state. Confirm the schedule’s next action and intended input after a restart.
  • File inputs: A scheduled file input may replay from the beginning of its file or clip after restart, rather than resume at the position that matches elapsed wall-clock time. Check whether replay is acceptable for the content.

See AWS: Starting and stopping a channel for the documented input and schedule behavior.

Choose restart, failover, or an alert deliberately

Automatic restart is not always the safest response. A persistent input problem may remain after the channel starts, while a pipeline failure may already be handled by MediaLive. Decide whether the workflow should start once, use a bounded retry policy, or alert an operator instead. The appropriate choice depends on the channel’s cost, content, and outage tolerance; AWS’s general documentation does not prescribe a policy for an individual channel.

  • Use input failover for a supported upstream-input failure when a standby input is configured.
  • Rely on pipeline redundancy and MediaLive’s recovery behavior for the pipeline-failure case your channel is designed to withstand.
  • Use an external start workflow when the whole channel is idle and restarting it is safe.
  • Consider an alert and human decision when the source may not be ready, a restart could replay content unexpectedly, or repeated automatic starts would be costly or disruptive.

Troubleshoot an automatic restart that does not work

Symptom Likely cause What to check
No handler invocation after the channel stops The rule does not match the event, or the best-effort event was not delivered Check the rule’s source, exact detail type, channel ARN/resource filter, and target invocation records. If missed notifications are unacceptable, add an idle-state alarm or periodic reconciliation.
The handler runs but does not start the channel Its state guard sees a non-idle or transitional state, or policy blocks the start Log and inspect the state returned by the live channel check, then confirm the handler’s intended state policy.
The start request fails or the channel does not produce expected output The source may not be ready, or channel/input configuration may need attention Confirm push inputs are already sending; inspect the channel’s state and input configuration rather than blindly retrying.
The channel starts on an unexpected input or replays a clip The schedule selects a different input, or a scheduled file input starts again from its beginning Review the schedule’s state and the file-input behavior expected after a restart.
Repeated invocations issue overlapping actions Duplicate events or retries are not safely handled Make the handler idempotent: check current state before acting, record outcomes, and avoid starting channels already transitioning or running.
