If your AWS Elemental MediaLive video reaches YouTube but has no sound, trace the audio path in order: confirm the source has audio, check the MediaLive input selector, verify the output’s audio encode and mapping, then inspect YouTube ingest and playback. The title alone cannot identify the cause; the key diagnostic is where the audio first disappears.
Locate where the audio disappears
Compare the source, MediaLive configuration, and YouTube Live Control Room preview before changing settings. If the source is silent, downstream configuration cannot restore its audio. If the source is audible but YouTube’s preview is silent, investigate the MediaLive input extraction and output mapping. If the preview has sound but a viewer does not, check the player and playback device before changing the channel.
| Stage | What to check | What the result suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Is the intended audio audible or present in the source signal? | If not, resolve the source or signal issue first. |
| MediaLive input | Does the input attachment select the intended track, PID, or language? | A wrong or missing selector can leave the channel without the intended audio. |
| MediaLive output | Is there an audio encode mapped to the intended input audio selector? | A missing encode or incorrect mapping can produce video without audio. |
| YouTube and playback | Does Live Control Room receive the intended stream and show audio in its preview? | Use the preview to distinguish an upstream signal problem from a viewer-side mute or playback-path issue. |
1. Confirm the source contains audio
Listen to or otherwise verify the audio at the source before changing the MediaLive channel. Check that the selected source, track, and physical or network signal are the ones you expect.
If the source is AWS Elemental Link
Check that the device has signal lock and inspect the EncoderRunning metric. AWS documents that a value of 0 means the encoder is not processing the input; verify that a valid signal is being passed to the device. See the AWS MediaLive metrics documentation.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Check MediaLive’s input audio selector
In the channel’s input attachment, confirm that the audio selector identifies the asset you intend to extract. MediaLive selectors are input-specific: requirements depend on the input type, and multi-track inputs may require choosing a PID or language. AWS describes RTMP as carrying a single audio asset, while HLS and other input types can require a more specific selection. Consult the MediaLive input selector documentation for the input type in use.
If audio fails only when the channel switches to particular inputs, compare each attachment’s selector and mapping rather than assuming one selector works for every source. For a multiple-input channel, AWS says the channel must extract the same audio languages from each input and use identical selector names across inputs.

3. Verify the output audio encode and mapping
Inspect the output configuration and confirm both that an audio encode exists and that it references the intended input audio selector. A video encode by itself does not carry the selected audio into the output.
For the documented HLS-to-YouTube example
AWS’s MediaLive-to-YouTube HLS example, published on 14 April 2021, uses an HLS output group; in Stream settings it selects Audio 1 and chooses AAC. AWS also specifies AAC audio in an MPEG-2 transport stream for this HLS example. Treat it as an example of that HLS workflow, not a setting to apply blindly to an RTMP output or a guarantee that current console labels are identical. See AWS’s HLS-to-YouTube walkthrough and confirm available options in your current MediaLive configuration.

4. Confirm YouTube ingest settings and preview
Check that MediaLive’s output group and destination match the ingest workflow configured for the YouTube live event. Confirm the intended YouTube stream URL and stream key are being used; YouTube’s encoder setup guide directs creators to configure the encoder with YouTube’s stream URL and key.
Then compare the YouTube Live Control Room preview with the source. If the preview is silent, continue tracing upstream through the output and input. If the preview has audio but the viewed stream is silent, check player mute, device volume, and the playback path before editing MediaLive.

5. Apply audio-format requirements for the chosen protocol
Do not carry an HLS-specific configuration over to RTMP without checking the format rules for the actual ingest protocol. YouTube’s supported audio formats differ by protocol, and the AWS HLS example is specific to HLS.
If you intend to send 5.1 surround sound
YouTube lists AAC for RTMP and AAC, AC-3, or E-AC-3 for HLS for 5.1 live audio. Its listed 5.1 settings are 48 kHz and 384 Kbps. These values apply to 5.1, not as general requirements for stereo. YouTube also supports mono and stereo configurations. See YouTube’s 5.1 live-audio guidance.

Common symptoms and fixes
- Source and YouTube preview are both silent: verify the source signal and track first; for Elemental Link, check signal lock and
EncoderRunning. - Source is audible, but YouTube preview is silent: check the input attachment’s audio selector, then confirm the output includes an audio encode mapped to that selector.
- Audio works on one input but not another: inspect the selector and mapping for each attachment. In a multiple-input channel, check that the selected languages and selector names meet AWS’s requirements.
- Audio is missing after changing output protocol: verify the output group and codec against the YouTube ingest protocol configured for the event; HLS and RTMP are not interchangeable configuration examples.
- Live Control Room preview has sound, but playback does not: check the viewer’s mute state, device volume, and player path before changing the encoder configuration.
What to collect if the issue remains
To narrow the fault without guessing, record the input type, whether the source is audible, the configured audio selector, the output group and audio mapping, the ingest protocol and destination, and whether the Live Control Room preview has sound. Those details show which segment of the audio path needs attention.
Or let it run in the cloud
