For an x264 encode where speed matters most, start with -preset veryfast, choose a quality target with -crf, and test a short representative sample. There is no universally best preset: the right choice depends on your encoder, source footage, hardware and tolerance for larger files or lower visual quality. Before encoding an entire playlist, check whether you can join its clips without re-encoding at all.
What the FFmpeg preset changes—and what it does not
With FFmpeg’s software libx264 encoder, -preset is a speed-versus-compression-efficiency control. A faster preset generally spends less time finding compression efficiencies; for a comparable quality target, it can produce a larger file than a slower preset. The preset does not itself choose your desired image quality. FFmpeg documents encoder presets separately from CRF, its constant-quality mode option for supported encoders. See the FFmpeg codec documentation and FFmpeg documentation.
That distinction is why -preset veryfast is a useful speed-first starting point, not a guaranteed optimum or an official YouTube setting. If the sample’s image quality or file size is not acceptable, compare fast or medium at the same CRF. A slower preset may improve compression efficiency, but it takes longer; judge the trade-off on your actual material rather than assuming one setting suits every playlist.
First ask whether you need to encode the playlist
If the clips already have compatible streams and formats, concatenating them with FFmpeg’s concat demuxer may let you join them without re-encoding. That can avoid the full encoding workload entirely and preserve the existing encoded video and audio. Compatibility matters: the demuxer expects the input files to match in relevant stream characteristics, and its input list must be prepared in the format FFmpeg expects.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When you need filters, or the input streams are incompatible and must be normalized into a common output, use the concat filter and re-encode. FFmpeg’s FAQ distinguishes the demuxer and filter approaches; its concat-filter guidance says, “This operation is recommended if you need to re-encode.” See the FFmpeg FAQ. Do not try to save time by forcing stream copy across incompatible inputs: it does not perform the conversion that the filter-and-encode route is meant to do.
Choose a speed and quality setting with a short test
- Identify the encoder and output. The recommendation here is specifically for software
libx264. Establish the target resolution and frame rate, and whether the source clips need filtering or other changes. A different encoder may use different options or behave differently. - Make a representative sample. Use footage that reflects the playlist’s hardest-to-encode material—such as detailed motion, fast action or dark scenes—rather than judging from a static, easy segment. Keep the output settings consistent with the full job.
- Start with
-preset veryfastand a CRF target. For example, a basic video-only test can look likeffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -crf 23 -an sample.mp4. Here,23is only an illustrative starting value, not a universal quality recommendation; inspect the result and adjust CRF for your content and quality needs. If audio should be included, omit-anand set or map audio deliberately. - Compare alternatives fairly. Encode the same sample with
fastand, if useful, medium, keeping CRF and other output settings fixed. Compare elapsed encode time, visual quality and resulting size. Do not infer a benchmark for your full playlist from a different machine or source. - Use the selected settings consistently. Once the sample meets your needs, apply the same tested settings to the full encode. Keep the original files until you have checked the complete output and its audio, duration and transitions.
The example is intentionally not a complete playlist-joining command: the correct concat input depends on whether you can use the demuxer or need the filter, as well as each clip’s streams and any required filters. FFmpeg’s concat guidance describes those workflows.

Match the upload format and frame rate to the material
YouTube’s upload recommendations list MP4, H.264 video, AAC-LC or Opus audio, stereo or supported multichannel audio, and a 48 kHz sample rate. YouTube also recommends matching the frame rate to the rate at which the video was recorded. Follow its current recommended upload encoding settings for the complete format guidance.
YouTube publishes recommended SDR video bitrates by resolution and frame-rate class. These are recommendations, not a requirement that every upload use exactly the listed rate:

| SDR output | YouTube-recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p, 24/25/30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p, 48/50/60 fps | 12 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 24/25/30 fps | 35–45 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 48/50/60 fps | 53–68 Mbps |
The figures are displayed on YouTube’s help page, which does not state a publication year. They are bitrate guidance, not CRF values and not a reason to choose a slower or faster preset by themselves. If you use CRF, evaluate the resulting file and quality; if you need a particular bitrate or file-size ceiling, configure and check that constraint separately.
Common problems and what to check
- The encode still takes too long: confirm that you actually need a re-encode. Compatible clips may be joinable with the concat demuxer. If re-encoding is required, test
veryfastbefore moving to slower presets, and avoid applying filters or conversions the finished output does not need. - The file is larger than expected: a faster preset can be less compression-efficient. Check the CRF and compare the sample against
fastormedium; a slower preset may reduce size at comparable quality, at the cost of encoding time. Measure the actual outputs. - The picture is not acceptable: inspect a representative sample and adjust CRF or preset based on the result. A preset is not a quality setting, and an illustrative CRF value should not be treated as right for every source.
- Concat demuxer fails or the joined result is unsuitable: check whether the input streams and formats are compatible for stream-copy concatenation. If they are not, use the concat filter workflow and re-encode as needed rather than expecting stream copy to reconcile differences.
- The YouTube upload does not match expectations: check the output container, video and audio codecs, audio sample rate, resolution and frame rate against YouTube’s upload guidance. Keep the frame rate aligned with the recorded material where practical.
Or let it run in the cloud
Encoding creates a finished video file; keeping a YouTube channel live around the clock is a separate job. If your goal is to loop uploaded videos as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and offers a first day free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
