There is no single reliable price for leaving a YouTube video looping on a Mac mini M2: the answer depends on the power used by your complete setup and your local electricity rate. Measure its average wall draw while the video is playing, then calculate watts × hours ÷ 1,000 × your price per kWh. The available Mac mini figures are reference points, not measurements of YouTube playback. Nor is there enough information to say an unspecified cloud service would be cheaper.
What the published M2 Mac mini power figures do—and do not—tell you
Apple lists 7 W idle and 50 W CPU maximum for its 2023 Mac mini configuration with M2, 24 GB unified memory, and a 2 TB SSD. Apple defines idle as Finder open under default power-management settings; its figures are measured at the wall and include system and power-supply losses. The 50 W figure is a compute-intensive CPU test, not a typical streaming estimate. Neither number measures a YouTube video loop. Apple’s Mac mini power consumption and thermal output information also covers newer generations, so be sure to use the 2023 M2 row rather than a newer model’s figures.
Notebookcheck reports 2.2–2.6 W idle, 28.7 W average load, and 51.5 W maximum load for its M2 Mac mini review setup. These are results from that reviewer’s stated test conditions, not browser or YouTube playback measurements. Notebookcheck’s M2 Mac mini review is useful as an independent example of how test conditions can produce different readings, but its average-load figure should not be used as your streaming power.
The relevant value for your bill is the average wall power of the actual setup while it performs the task. A display, speakers, external drives, network gear, and UPS can all change the total if they are included in the measurement.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Measure the setup you plan to leave running
- Connect the equipment you intend to use—Mac mini, display if applicable, audio equipment, storage, and any other included devices—to a plug-in electricity usage monitor. Alternatively, use a suitable meter you already have. No particular meter model or current listing is established here.
- Start the intended YouTube video and let the setup settle into its normal playback state. Measure the complete setup at the wall, not just the Mac mini, if you want the total system cost.
- Record the average watts over a representative period of operation. A momentary reading may not capture normal variation; use the monitor’s accumulated or average reading if available.
- Note exactly what the measurement includes. If your display or router is on a separate outlet and not measured, do not imply its energy is included.
A wall meter reading replaces the Finder-only idle figure or a reviewer’s unrelated workload with a measurement of your own playback and equipment. The sources cited here do not establish a universal average wattage for an M2 Mac mini playing YouTube.
Calculate the electricity cost for your own rate
Use your measured average power, the hours you will run the setup, and your local marginal electricity charge per kilowatt-hour:

- Energy in kWh: average watts × operating hours ÷ 1,000.
- Energy cost: kWh × your local price per kWh.
For a 30-day always-on period, use 720 hours. The result is conditional on your reading and tariff. If the meter measured only the Mac mini, the calculation excludes any separately powered display, speakers, network equipment, or storage. If a UPS is between the equipment and the wall, a wall-side measurement includes its conversion losses.
For example, enter your measured wattage as P and your local marginal rate as R: (P × 720 ÷ 1,000) × R estimates the energy charge for 30 days. This is a calculation method, not a claim about what a particular M2 setup consumes or what any reader pays.

Can a cloud service be cheaper?
There is no evidence-grounded cloud break-even figure without naming a service and specifying the region, product or instance, billing terms, 24-hour runtime, storage, data transfer, taxes where applicable, and whether the service can perform the same task. A comparison of Mac electricity alone with an unspecified cloud bill would not establish savings. If you are comparing actual options, put them on the same time period and scope: measured local wall energy and marginal rate versus the cloud service’s full cost for the workload and runtime you need.
There is also a task distinction. Looping a video in a desktop YouTube player is not automatically equivalent to using a cloud service to keep a YouTube live stream running. Check what the cloud product actually does before treating the two as substitutes.

Loop a video on YouTube and account for interruptions
Loop one video on desktop
- Open the video’s YouTube watch page.
- Right-click inside the video player.
- Choose Loop.
For a playlist, YouTube’s desktop instructions say to expand the playlist and use its Loop control. See YouTube Help: Loop videos or playlists on YouTube – Computer.
Do not assume a loop prevents every prompt
YouTube says its “Video paused. Continue watching?” prompt may appear with Autoplay on before 60 minutes of uninterrupted watching on web, before 30 minutes on mobile, or before 180 minutes on TV. Those timings describe the prompt; they do not establish that every manual loop triggers it or avoids it. See YouTube Help: Why YouTube asks, “Continue watching?”.
