Compare similar machines in the same intended region, include storage and outbound-transfer charges for your actual stream, and test the complete setup at its target bitrate before relying on it. The VM runs the encoder; YouTube receives the stream.
How a cloud VM sends a loop to YouTube Live
Create a live stream in YouTube Studio, then configure encoder software on the VM with YouTube’s server URL and the stream key. The encoder sends the video to YouTube; EC2 and Compute Engine are candidate places to run that software, not services YouTube requires. YouTube describes both software and hardware encoders in its live encoder setup guidance.
This comparison concerns one outgoing stream to YouTube. AWS’s documented media-services workflow can also include MediaLive, MediaPackage or MediaStore, and CloudFront distribution. That is a broader architecture, including delivery to viewers; its costs should not be compared with the cost of a VM sending one feed to YouTube. The AWS architecture documentation does not establish that a general-purpose EC2 instance beats Compute Engine for this use.
What to compare between EC2 and Compute Engine
No matched monthly cost or deployment test establishes a provider winner. Compare an intended setup on both platforms rather than relying on a headline VM price or a published maximum network figure.

For a fair estimate, price continuously running, similarly capable instances in the chosen regions; add disk, IP and other applicable charges; and verify outbound-transfer treatment using current provider terms. Then test stream stability at the intended bitrate. Recheck the numbers before committing because instance prices and network billing can change.
Choose YouTube settings before choosing machine size
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance publishes bitrate recommendations by resolution, frame rate and codec. For the cited 30-fps examples, it recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p with AV1 or H.265 and 14 Mbps with H.264; at 720p, the recommendations are 6 Mbps with AV1 or H.265 and 8 Mbps with H.264. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not evidence that a particular VM can encode or upload reliably at those rates.

Use the figures for the resolution, frame rate and codec you actually plan to send. Assess the encoder’s CPU or GPU needs separately from network capacity, and allow for audio and protocol overhead when planning the upload path. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data to and through Google’s servers.
- In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and get its server URL and stream key.
- In the encoder on your VM, select the intended resolution, frame rate and codec; enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key.
- Send a test stream with audio and movement representative of the real loop. YouTube’s advice is: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
- Check YouTube’s stream health and the VM’s encoding and network behavior under sustained load before treating the setup as ready.
Why Compute Engine’s published bandwidth ceiling is not a guarantee
Google documents outbound network ceilings that vary by machine family and route. For most machine series, its documentation describes a maximum of 3 Gbps per flow to destinations outside a VPC, with additional total-bandwidth restrictions depending on machine type and Tier_1 networking. Some machine families have different limits. Google says actual maximum bandwidth is not guaranteed and can be reduced by factors such as packet size, protocol overhead, flow count and network congestion. These are upper limits, not a throughput promise or proof that Google is cheaper. Check the exact machine and route in the Compute Engine bandwidth documentation.

Plan for stream continuity and the archive separately
A 24/7 broadcast depends on more than the VM staying powered on: the encoder must keep sending, and the YouTube ingest connection must remain healthy. Set up a way to detect a stopped encoder or unhealthy stream and decide how it will restart. Test recovery rather than assuming a high network ceiling prevents drops.
YouTube says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” Its cited guidance does not promise a complete archive for a stream lasting longer than 12 hours. If a durable replay matters, verify current Live Control Room behavior for your broadcast duration and keep an independent copy of the source media. See YouTube’s live encoder guidance.

Streaming rights and monetization are separate from hosting
A cloud server does not make a loop eligible for monetization. YouTube’s channel monetization policies include live streams in their use of “video.” The policy clarification dated July 15, 2025 says repetitive or mass-produced content falls under its inauthentic-content policy; content is expected to provide original and authentic value. Repetition with little variation, commentary or educational value may not be eligible, and reused content is reviewed at channel level separately from copyright clearance. YouTube says, “Our reviewers will check your channel and content against our policies.” Read the current YouTube channel monetization policies.
Rights are a separate check. YouTube’s livestream terms say the content provider represents that they hold the necessary rights for exploitation of live content on Google services worldwide, including applicable music licensing rights, and must comply with applicable laws. Clear the video, soundtrack and other included material for streaming and any archive you intend to rely on.

When a VM makes sense
Choose between EC2 and Compute Engine based on a matched estimate and a successful test of your actual encoder, region, bitrate, storage needs and recovery plan—not on a universal cost or reliability claim. A VM approach gives you control over the host and software but requires you to configure and maintain that setup.
