But the symptom alone does not identify the cause. Compare OBS’s live output, a local recording, and YouTube playback to find where the blank interval first appears.
First, find where the black interval enters the stream
Watch the transition in OBS and make a short local recording that includes a clip change. If you use Studio Mode, judge the live/program pane—the output viewers receive—not just the edit/preview pane, which can show a different scene.
- The local recording also goes black: Start with source visibility, playback completion, playlist timing, and scene composition. The blank is present in OBS’s recorded output.
- The recording is clean, but YouTube playback goes black: Inspect OBS’s outgoing stream and YouTube’s live monitoring. YouTube Live Control Room provides live metrics, but those metrics do not by themselves identify this particular symptom. See YouTube’s live streaming help.
- OBS reports dropped frames at the same time: Check the connection indicator and dropped-frame counter. OBS says an increasing counter alongside a yellow or red connection indicator points to an unstable connection to the streaming service or a connection that cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. A black interval without that signal does not, on its own, establish a network problem.
This boundary check narrows the search; it does not prove a single cause. The clip source type, playlist, scene arrangement, and OBS version can all affect what happens at a transition.
Check Media Source playback and visibility settings
“Show nothing when playback ends”
In the affected OBS Media Source properties, look for Show nothing when playback ends. OBS documents that this setting automatically hides the source when its file finishes. If no other visible source covers the canvas, the end of a clip can leave the output blank. OBS describes the option as useful for preventing a video’s last frame from remaining on screen; it does not mean that another clip or scene will appear automatically. “Close file when inactive”
In the same source properties, check Close file when inactive. OBS says this unloads a hidden or off-scene media file to free memory. When the source becomes active again, it may take a short time to reload, during which it is not showing. That can look like a brief black gap during a scene switch. Change one setting at a time and record another transition so you can tell whether the change affected the symptom.
OBS’s Media Sources documentation describing these controls is dated January 11, 2022. These documented effects explain possible causes, not which settings are enabled in your setup; labels or behavior may differ in later OBS versions.

Check the playlist and the scene that should cover the gap
For an OBS VLC Video playlist
OBS VLC Video supports playlists, including controls for looping the playlist and shuffling it. Check the item order, whether the intended next file is valid and queued, and whether loop or shuffle behavior matches your plan. Also inspect visibility behavior: having a next item in the playlist does not help if the source or scene showing it is hidden. The OBS Media Sources guide documents these playlist controls.
For scene changes and transitions
OBS scenes are built from sources, and transitions such as Fade and Cut determine how the outgoing and incoming scenes appear. Confirm that the intended scene is actually sent to live output and that it contains a visible background, holding slide, or next clip beneath or after the outgoing source. A transition to an empty scene can expose the canvas. In Studio Mode, make the change to the live/program side rather than assuming the edit/preview side is already on air. A practical troubleshooting order
- Observe the live/program output during a transition. If using Studio Mode, do not use the edit/preview pane as the sole reference for what viewers see.
- Record a short local sample containing a clip change. Compare that recording with YouTube playback to establish whether the interval is already in OBS’s output or appears later.
- If the recording is black, inspect the active media source. Check Show nothing when playback ends and Close file when inactive. Test one change at a time.
- If the source is VLC Video, inspect the playlist. Verify order, loop and shuffle settings, next-item availability, and source visibility.
- Check scene coverage and transitions. Make sure the incoming scene is not empty and that a background or holding source remains visible through the handoff.
- If the recording is clean or OBS shows dropped frames, inspect the stream path. Review OBS’s connection indicator and dropped-frame counter, then use YouTube Live Control Room’s live metrics. OBS’s Help Portal provides connection troubleshooting guidance.
