How to Calculate the Break-Even Point Between a Gaming PC and Cloud Gaming

Calculate when a gaming PC could cost less than cloud gaming by comparing upfront cost, resale value, measured electricity, subscriptions, and usage limits over the same period.

To estimate when buying a gaming PC becomes cheaper than cloud gaming, compare both options over the same period. Subtract the PC’s expected resale value from its purchase and setup costs, then divide that net upfront cost by the cloud service’s monthly cost minus the PC’s monthly running cost. The result is a break-even month only if cloud gaming costs more each month to run than the PC; if it does not, there is no break-even through operating-cost savings under those assumptions.

This is a cash-cost comparison, not a complete measure of value. It does not price convenience, portability, latency, flexibility, ownership, or differences in game libraries. The answer depends on your hours played, local electricity rate, PC lifespan and resale value, and the cloud plan available in your region.

Use the same time horizon for both options

Choose a period that reflects how long you expect to use the PC before replacing or upgrading it—for example, three or four years. Compare the PC’s costs and resale value at the end of that period with all cloud-service payments and any costs you would incur specifically to use the service.

A PC bought upfront and a monthly subscription have different cash-flow patterns. Looking only at the PC’s sticker price or one month of cloud access can give a misleading answer. A longer horizon spreads the PC purchase across more months, but also gives more time for maintenance, upgrades, electricity use, subscription price changes, and changing game needs to matter.

Calculate the simple break-even month

Use these monthly and upfront amounts:

  • Local recurring cost = monthly gaming hours × average whole-system wall power in kilowatts × your marginal electricity price per kWh + monthly maintenance and upgrade allowance.
  • Cloud recurring cost = subscription + paid extra hours or storage, if applicable + internet or device costs required only for cloud gaming.
  • Net local upfront cost = PC purchase cost − estimated resale value at the end of your comparison period + one-time local setup costs.

Simple break-even months = net local upfront cost ÷ (cloud recurring cost − local recurring cost), provided the denominator is positive.

If the cloud recurring cost is equal to or less than the PC’s recurring cost, the denominator is zero or negative: monthly operating savings do not recoup the PC’s upfront cost under those assumptions. That does not automatically make cloud gaming the better choice; the two options may differ in library, performance, availability, or flexibility.

Build the comparison from your own inputs

1. Get a PC quote that meets your actual needs

Price a complete PC or build that can run the games and settings you want. Include any one-time components or setup costs you would not otherwise incur. Do not assume a cloud plan’s performance label maps directly to a particular retail graphics card; compare actual performance needs and supported games instead.

2. Estimate the PC’s value when you stop using it

Subtract a realistic resale estimate at the end of your chosen period. The resale value is uncertain, so use a conservative estimate and test a lower or higher one in a second calculation. Include only upgrades and maintenance you reasonably expect during the period; do not assume every PC needs an upgrade on a fixed schedule.

3. Measure power at the wall

For a useful electricity estimate, measure the entire PC during representative gameplay with a plug-in power meter when possible. GPU board power is not the same as whole-system wall draw. Convert watts to kilowatts by dividing by 1,000, then multiply by gaming hours and your marginal electricity price per kWh.

For example, if a measured system averages 0.4 kW while gaming, it is used for 60 hours in a month, and the relevant electricity rate is 0.20 per kWh in the reader’s currency, the gaming electricity estimate is 0.4 × 60 × 0.20 = 4.80 for that month. This is an illustrative calculation, not a typical PC draw or electricity price. Use your own measurement and tariff.

4. Count only costs caused by the choice

If you already pay for broadband, own a suitable screen or controller, or already have a PC, include only costs that would change because you choose one option. Do not charge both alternatives for the same existing expense. Add a broadband or client-device upgrade only if cloud gaming actually requires it.

5. Check the cloud plan’s real limits and game access

Record the plan’s regional price, included playtime, rollover, extra-hour charges, games catalog, and any relevant subscription bundle. A plan that appears cheaper can cost more if your usage exceeds its allowance. Conversely, bundled access to games you would otherwise pay for can change the value comparison, but only if those are games you want and can use under the plan.

GeForce NOW is a cloud gaming rig rather than a full Windows PC: game rights and supported titles matter. NVIDIA’s membership terms say members are responsible for having rights to use third-party games and downloadable content. Shadow describes its offers as full Windows 11 cloud PCs, with differing use caps and service levels. These are different kinds of service, not interchangeable labels for the same product.

Account for playtime caps, price changes, and region

Provider terms can change, and availability, prices, bundles, and catalogs vary by country. Treat published prices as dated references, not guaranteed checkout quotes. For a U.S. reference, NVIDIA’s corporate release published GeForce NOW Ultimate at $19.99 per month or $99.99 for six months, and Performance at $9.99 per month or $49.99 for six months. NVIDIA’s terms also say pricing can change and charges may include applicable taxes or fees; check the current local checkout price before calculating.

NVIDIA’s FAQ states that Performance and Ultimate include 100 monthly hours, with up to 15 unused hours rolling into the next month. Additional premium time can be purchased; otherwise, members can continue with basic rigs until the reset. Confirm current limits and charges for your plan before relying on those figures.

Shadow’s current offers are country-specific; use a quote for your own region rather than transferring a price from another market. Microsoft’s December 2025 guide said Xbox Cloud Gaming was available with Game Pass Essential, Premium, and Ultimate. Microsoft announced on September 3, 2026 that changes would begin in November 2026, including an option to use Xbox Cloud Gaming without Game Pass. Because that announced change may affect the offer depending on when and where you read this, verify the live terms in your region.

Check whether your connection can support cloud play

Network feasibility is part of the comparison. A subscription is not a practical substitute for local hardware if your connection, latency, or service availability cannot support the experience you need. Requirements differ by provider and stream setting.

NVIDIA’s U.S. GeForce NOW system requirements list 15 Mbps for HD up to 60 fps, 25 Mbps for FHD at 60 fps, 35 Mbps for QHD or UW QHD at 120 fps, and 45 Mbps for 4K at 120 fps, among other tiers. NVIDIA also calls for latency below 80 ms to a data center and recommends wired Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi. These figures apply to GeForce NOW, not every cloud gaming service. NVIDIA advises using its in-app network test: a generic speed test does not check the route to its data centers.

Test the service where you will actually play, at the times you normally play, and check service availability in your area. If you need an internet or device upgrade solely to make cloud gaming viable, include its incremental cost in the cloud side of the comparison.

Work an example without pretending it is universal

Suppose a hypothetical PC has a net upfront cost of 900 after subtracting expected resale value and adding setup costs. Suppose its monthly electricity, maintenance, and upgrade allowance totals 12, while the cloud option costs 20 per month after any relevant add-ons. The monthly difference is 20 − 12 = 8, so the simple break-even estimate is 900 ÷ 8 = 112.5 months.

That estimate is useful only if the assumptions remain plausible for nearly 113 months. If your chosen ownership horizon is shorter, compare total spend over that horizon rather than treating the arithmetic as a prediction. Replace every illustrative input with local quotes, measured power, your tariff, and the plan terms that apply to you.

Compare total cost over your chosen period

Once you have the monthly inputs, compare total spend over the same number of months. This makes it easier to see how usage, plan caps, and PC resale assumptions change the result.

Input or cost Gaming PC Cloud gaming
Initial cost Purchase, one-time setup, and any upgrades needed at the outset Only a device or internet upgrade required specifically for cloud use
Recurring cost Measured gaming electricity plus a realistic maintenance and upgrade allowance Subscription plus extra-hour charges and other usage costs
Value at the end Subtract a realistic resale estimate Do not assume the subscription has resale value
Fit and access Check performance for the games and settings you want Check supported games, rights, plan limits, regional availability, and connection quality

For each option, calculate upfront cost + (monthly recurring cost × number of months) − any end-of-period resale value. Keep taxes, promotions, and uncertain resale estimates visible rather than hiding them in a single total.

Run sensitivity checks before deciding

A single break-even figure can hide how much the result depends on uncertain inputs. Recalculate with low, expected, and high cases for the inputs most likely to change:

  • Monthly play hours: low use can make a fixed subscription expensive per hour; heavy use can run into cloud-plan caps or paid extra time.
  • Electricity price and measured wall power: use your local marginal rate and the PC’s gameplay draw, not a generic energy estimate.
  • PC resale value, lifespan, and likely upgrades: a lower resale value or an early replacement changes the local total.
  • Cloud price and usage terms: test the current regional subscription, included hours, rollover, and overage costs.
  • Incremental internet or device costs: include them only if they are necessary and attributable to cloud gaming.

A California Energy Commission report published in 2021 estimated that, under conditions prevailing in 2016, cloud gaming added approximately 40–60% to otherwise total local annual desktop electricity use. The estimate relied on an earlier GeForce NOW beta, NVIDIA SHIELD TV, and published data-center and network energy literature. It is historical and model-dependent; do not use that percentage as a current estimate for your own PC, connection, or cloud service.

Handle a PC you already own differently

If you already own a suitable gaming PC, its original purchase price is sunk for a forward-looking decision. Do not charge it again as though you were buying it today. Compare the future electricity, maintenance, and likely upgrade costs of keeping it against the cloud subscription and any costs that cloud use would add. If selling the PC is a realistic option, include the sale proceeds you would give up by keeping it as an opportunity cost.

What the calculation does—and does not—decide

The arithmetic answers a narrow question: under stated cash-cost assumptions, when does the accumulated difference in recurring costs offset the PC’s net upfront cost? It does not decide whether you would rather own hardware, use a full Windows PC remotely, avoid downloads, accept cloud latency, depend on a catalog, or have games available offline. Treat those as separate decision criteria rather than quietly assigning them a dollar value.

StreamNeo is for a different kind of streaming

StreamNeo is not a cloud gaming service and does not provide a remote gaming PC. It is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live 24/7 from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud loops the uploaded video, so your computer does not need to stay on. It is relevant if you are comparing ways to run a continuous prerecorded YouTube stream, not if you want to play games through a cloud gaming service. Learn more at StreamNeo.
