You can run a prerecorded playlist to YouTube Live from an Ubuntu server on Amazon EC2: launch an Ubuntu instance, install and configure an encoder, connect it to a YouTube stream using the server URL and private stream key, and keep the playlist and encoder running. YouTube’s official guidance gives the ingest settings, but it does not prescribe an EC2 size or guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation. This guide shows a practical setup path and what you must verify for your own account, workload, and AWS region.
What this setup does—and what it does not guarantee
EC2 is the remote computer that hosts your playlist source and encoder. The encoder sends a live feed to YouTube over RTMPS, so your personal computer does not need to run OBS or stay connected for the stream to continue. You remain responsible for the EC2 instance, media, encoder configuration, monitoring, and recovery.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish how a longer session is archived, a maximum session duration, or what happens when a connection drops. A 24/7 playlist is therefore an intended operating pattern—not a guarantee from YouTube that one uninterrupted session will run indefinitely. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Before you launch the Ubuntu server
Prepare YouTube Live
Make sure live streaming is enabled for your YouTube account before building around it. For a first-time activation, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select a stream; you will use its server URL and stream key when configuring the encoder. The exact controls can change, so follow the current labels shown in Studio. Details: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Choose an Ubuntu image and region
Canonical describes standard Ubuntu on AWS as free to use, AWS-optimized, and supported for five years. Ubuntu Pro adds broader security coverage and kernel live patching. Choose the image and region currently available in the EC2 console; verify the image version and Pro eligibility there rather than relying on a version-specific launch recipe. See Canonical’s Ubuntu on AWS information.
Plan the workload and access
- Estimate the resources needed to read your playlist files and encode the chosen resolution and frame rate. No official source here identifies a tested EC2 instance family or size for this workload; validate performance with your own media and settings.
- Decide how media will reach the instance and persist across restarts. Keep a separate copy of original playlist files; do not treat an instance disk as your only archive.
- Restrict administrative access to the instance, keep system packages and encoder software maintained, and do not expose credentials in public scripts or logs.
Set up the EC2 encoder workflow
The following is an implementation outline, not a tested EC2 deployment recipe. The official sources establish YouTube’s connection workflow and encoder settings, but do not prescribe FFmpeg, OBS, a system service, an Ubuntu image version, or instance size for this exact use case. Check the current documentation for the encoder you select before installing or configuring it.
- Launch Ubuntu on EC2. In the AWS console, launch an Ubuntu Server image in the region you intend to use. Configure secure administrative access and storage appropriate for the operating system and playlist media. Note the instance’s network and storage configuration so you can include it in your cost estimate.
- Install and validate your encoder. Choose an encoder that can read your playlist format and output a continuous stream. Confirm it works on the selected Ubuntu image, can access the media, and can sustain the encode at the intended resolution and frame rate before relying on it.
- Prepare the playlist. Put the prerecorded files in a location the encoder can read reliably. Test transitions, audio levels, file compatibility, and what the encoder does when it reaches the end of the list. A looping playlist requires the encoder or its playlist input to repeat the items; verify that behavior instead of assuming it.
- Create or select a YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the destination stream and copy its server URL and stream key. Enter them in the encoder’s streaming destination settings. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, include it in a publicly readable script, or leave it in logs or screenshots.
- Apply the ingest settings below. Use YouTube’s published settings as a baseline, then verify the encoder’s actual output and YouTube’s incoming stream health. Configure the encoder to keep running after the initial test only after you have confirmed its playlist and reconnect behavior.
- Run a representative test. Test with the same kind of motion, audio, resolution, and frame rate expected in the live playlist. Watch YouTube’s stream-health status and messages, and check the audio and video from a viewer’s perspective before treating the setup as ready.
Recommended YouTube encoder settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the stream between the encoder and Google’s servers. Its listed protocols support H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. The figures below are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular EC2 instance or network path can encode and upload at that rate. | Setting | YouTube guidance | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Protocol | RTMPS recommended | Use the secure server URL supplied for the stream in YouTube Studio. |
| Video codec | H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS | Choose a codec supported by your encoder and workflow; do not assume every configuration is available in every encoder. |
| Rate control | CBR | Set constant bitrate at the target supported by your chosen output. |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps | Match the frame rate to the source and the workload you have validated. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds | Set the encoder’s keyframe interval accordingly and confirm the setting is applied. |
| H.264 1080p30 bitrate | 14 Mbps recommended; 5 Mbps minimum | Use the recommendation as an ingest baseline; test both encode capacity and sustained outbound bandwidth. |
| H.264 720p30 bitrate | 8 Mbps recommended; 3 Mbps minimum | Use the recommendation as an ingest baseline; a lower resolution does not remove the need to test stability. |
YouTube lists different bitrate ranges for AV1 and H.265/HEVC; use the current values on its settings page if selecting either codec rather than applying the H.264 figures above. Whatever codec you choose, use representative movement and audio in the test and monitor stream health during operation.

A cloud instance can stay on without your home computer, but an encoder process can still stop, media can become unavailable, and network connections can fail. Configure the operating system and encoder so that you can observe whether the process is healthy and restart it when appropriate. The specific service manager, restart policy, and reconnect options depend on the encoder and implementation; the official YouTube pages do not specify them for EC2.
- Check that the playlist has valid paths and that every file can be read after a reboot.
- Confirm that the encoder’s output reconnects as intended after a brief network interruption, using a test stream or controlled test rather than assuming recovery.
- Monitor the EC2 instance and YouTube stream health; an instance being in a running state does not prove that viewers are receiving audio and video.
- Keep the stream key private and rotate it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed.
- Review YouTube’s copyright and monetization rules for every item in the playlist. Permission to possess or upload a recording is not automatically permission to rebroadcast it live. Reused-content and copyright issues can affect a channel independently of whether the encoder works.
Estimate EC2 costs for your own region
There is no reliable universal monthly cost for a 24/7 EC2 playlist: the total depends on region, instance type, storage, transfer, and use. AWS says On-Demand instance charges accrue from launch until stop or termination. Its pricing information also identifies data transfer, EBS storage, and public IPv4 as cost areas. Build an estimate using the intended configuration in the Amazon EC2 On-Demand pricing information and AWS Pricing Calculator.

AWS describes 100 GB per month of internet data transfer out aggregated across AWS services and regions, excluding China and GovCloud, subject to AWS conditions. This is not a blanket promise that every streaming setup has no transfer charges; check the current terms and your account’s applicable usage before budgeting around it.
For Ubuntu, standard Ubuntu is free to use according to Canonical; Ubuntu Pro is an optional choice for broader security coverage and kernel live patching. Include any applicable Pro and AWS costs for your chosen image and region in the estimate.

YouTube reports poor stream health
Check the encoder’s actual output codec, CBR setting, frame rate, keyframe interval, and bitrate against YouTube’s guidance. Then check whether the selected instance can encode the media and sustain outbound traffic at that rate. Reduce the output target or change the instance only after testing the resulting stream.
The stream connects but has no picture or sound
Verify that the encoder is reading the intended media, that the files contain usable video and audio, and that the configured output includes both tracks. Test with a representative clip and inspect YouTube’s stream-health messages rather than relying only on the encoder’s local status.
The playlist stops at the last item
Check the playlist input’s loop behavior and file paths. Test what happens at the end of the list and after an instance or encoder restart; continuous playback must be configured and validated in the selected encoder.

The stream stops after a long session
YouTube’s cited guidance establishes automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours only. It does not answer what happens for longer sessions, so do not assume that a single session will remain live or archive indefinitely. Check current YouTube guidance and plan how you will monitor and restart a stream if needed.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube playlist without maintaining an Ubuntu server and encoder, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live from the cloud: upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the files as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the Monthly plan is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded videos and streams to YouTube, not a camera feed. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
