First identify whether FFmpeg failed to join the clips or whether it created a local file that YouTube later rejects or flags. For compatible files, try the concat demuxer with stream copy. If streams, time bases, resolution, frame rate, or audio settings differ, normalize and re-encode with the concat filter. Then check YouTube’s ingest settings and stream-health diagnostics separately.
Choose the concat method that fits your files
| Method | Use it when | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Concat demuxer | Inputs have the same streams, codecs, and time bases, and you want to join them without re-encoding. | It cannot normalize incompatible streams. Unequal stream lengths or inaccurate duration metadata can cause gaps or artifacts. |
| Concat filter | You need to re-encode or normalize differing inputs, such as their resolution or frame rate. | Segments must start at timestamp zero, and corresponding streams must be made compatible. Different frame rates can produce variable-frame-rate output unless normalized. |
| Concat protocol | A supported container permits raw file-level concatenation. | It is not a general-purpose way to join MP4 files. |
FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends the concat filter when re-encoding is needed. See the FFmpeg FAQ on concatenating video files and the concat demuxer reference.
Inspect the first error and compare the input files
Keep the first meaningful FFmpeg error line; later messages may only be consequences. Inspect each clip’s streams and metadata before choosing a command:
ffprobe -hide_banner -i clip1.mp4
ffprobe -hide_banner -i clip2.mp4
Compare the number and order of streams, codec names and profiles, time bases, resolution, frame rate, pixel format, audio codec, sample rate, channel layout, and reported duration. If FFmpeg reports mismatched streams, codecs, or time bases—or the clips need different output settings—use a filter-and-encode workflow rather than expecting -c copy to repair them.

Join compatible clips with the concat demuxer
Create a plain UTF-8 text file such as list.ffconcat. If you want FFmpeg to detect the format from the header, make the exact header the first line: no byte-order mark or extra whitespace.
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'part1.mp4'
file 'part2.mp4'
Then run:
ffmpeg -f concat -i list.ffconcat -c copy output.mp4
This stream-copy approach is for compatible inputs: the demuxer requires the same streams, codecs, and time bases. It adjusts timestamps based on each file’s duration, so incompatible stream lengths or incorrect duration metadata can disrupt where the next segment begins. The list uses safe relative file paths by default. FFmpeg’s -safe 0 accepts arbitrary names and protocols; use it only when you trust the list and every referenced path. Escape or quote paths with spaces or special characters according to FFmpeg’s concat script syntax.

Normalize mismatched clips with the concat filter
The filter route re-encodes so you can make video settings consistent. Each segment must begin at timestamp zero, and related audio and video streams must be concatenated in a synchronized operation. The filter can select common pixel and sample formats, but you must explicitly normalize other properties such as resolution. If frame rates differ, normalize them when appropriate for the intended output; otherwise, the result may be variable-frame-rate.
This video-only example is a pattern to adapt to the actual inputs, not a general-purpose command. It deliberately omits audio, so it discards audio from the output:

-map "[v]" -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p output.mp4
If the clips have audio, inspect it and decide how to handle it. Include corresponding audio streams in one synchronized concat operation, or normalize or mix them separately with an explicit choice about timing and content. Audio and video durations that do not match exactly can cause desynchronization at a join. FFmpeg documents the filter approach in its concat filter reference.
Fix gaps, timestamp jumps, and bad transitions
Check duration metadata
The concat demuxer resets the first input to timestamp zero and places each later file at the previous file’s end. It does this globally: if streams within a file have different lengths, gaps can result. An inaccurate reported duration or a truncated file can place the next segment at the wrong time and produce artifacts. The concat list accepts duration directives to override inaccurate or unavailable file-duration information; use them only when you know the correct duration.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Reset timestamps for filtered inputs
The concat filter expects each segment to start at zero. A video filter such as setpts=PTS-STARTPTS resets the video timestamps in the example above. Audio may need its own timestamp handling; do not assume resetting video alone fixes an audio/video sync issue.
Separate a file-assembly problem from a live-ingest problem
Play or inspect the completed local output first. If FFmpeg produced the file but YouTube reports an issue after streaming begins, diagnose the ingest separately: a successful concat does not establish that the encoder output matches YouTube’s requirements.

Check YouTube’s encoder settings and stream health
YouTube’s published encoder guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. These are protocol-specific settings, not universal instructions for every YouTube ingest protocol. Consult YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the bitrate recommendation that matches your resolution and frame rate.
YouTube distinguishes protocols: RTMP/RTMPS suit normal, low, or ultra-low latency, while HLS and DASH offer additional codec choices and generally involve more latency. Do not assume that FFmpeg FLV/RTMP settings can be reused unchanged for an HLS or DASH workflow. Check YouTube’s live streaming protocol comparison for the chosen protocol.
When the local output looks valid, inspect YouTube Live’s stream-health status and configuration issue labels. Official diagnostics include unsupported video codec, unsupported audio codec, missing audio or video, open GOP, and video starvation, which can cause buffering. An open-GOP warning calls for a closed-GOP encoder configuration. See YouTube’s Live Streaming API configuration issue documentation.
Common symptoms and what to check
| Symptom | Likely check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Concat demuxer reports incompatible streams or fails during stream copy | Compare stream count and order, codecs, and time bases with ffprobe. |
Use the concat filter and normalize the streams that differ. |
| A gap or abrupt jump appears at a join | Compare stream lengths and reported file durations; check whether a clip is truncated. | Correct known duration metadata with a concat-list duration directive, or use a filter workflow that normalizes timestamps. |
| Audio drifts or breaks at a transition | Check audio stream presence, sample rate, channel layout, and duration against video. | Handle corresponding audio and video streams together or make an explicit audio normalization or mixing decision. |
| YouTube flags the stream although the local output plays | Read stream-health diagnostics and verify the encoder settings for the selected ingest protocol. | Correct the specific codec, GOP, missing-stream, or starvation issue reported by YouTube. |
If these checks do not resolve it, share the first FFmpeg error line, the command used, FFmpeg version, and relevant ffprobe stream metadata. Without those details, the exact cause cannot be determined.
