For a continuous YouTube stream, start with AWS Elemental MediaPackage v2 time_delay set to 0 and leave suggested presentation delay unset unless you intentionally want playback behind the manifest’s live point. These MediaPackage settings affect what a player can watch and when; YouTube’s live latency mode is a separate choice. No single MediaPackage value guarantees end-to-end latency for an AWS-to-YouTube workflow, so test the actual ingest path and monitor YouTube stream health.

Separate MediaPackage timing from YouTube latency

MediaPackage controls how content is made available at its playback endpoint. YouTube’s latency mode governs the viewer experience on YouTube. They are not equivalent controls: changing a MediaPackage delay does not select YouTube Low or Ultra-low latency, and selecting a YouTube mode does not remove delay intentionally added at the MediaPackage endpoint.

For continuous streaming, decide first whether you are optimizing for faster viewer arrival, playback resilience, or rewind and catch-up. These goals can conflict. AWS notes that a time delay can increase playback latency; it may be useful in specific resilience scenarios, such as reducing buffering during input switching with input redundancy and short output segments, rather than as a general low-latency optimization. AWS MediaPackage v2 time-delay guidance

What each MediaPackage setting does

time_delay: shifts the available live point

AWS defines time_delay as a duration that shifts when content becomes available to players. It redefines the live point as “now” minus the configured duration. AWS illustrates that content received at 12:20 with a 60-second delay becomes available at 12:21, while a request made at 12:20 is served content from 12:19. The minimum is 0 seconds. When startoverwindow is 0, the maximum is 86,400 seconds (24 hours); when it is nonzero, the maximum delay equals that window. If both are set, the delay must be less than the startover window. • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For the least intentional delay, use 0. Increase it only when you have a defined operational reason and have tested the effect on viewers.

Startover window: retains earlier live content

The origin endpoint’s startover window determines how much ongoing live content remains available for viewers to start over or catch up. AWS documents a maximum of 1,209,600 seconds (14 days) for a MediaPackage v2 origin endpoint. It is a time-shift playback control, not a setting for lowering latency. If you configure a nonzero window, it also sets the maximum permitted time_delay, and the delay must remain shorter than the window. AWS origin endpoint guide

Suggested presentation delay: starts playback behind the manifest

This setting tells a player how far behind the end of the manifest to begin. AWS gives 35 seconds as an example, which starts playback 35 seconds before the manifest’s live point. If used together with time_delay, AWS says the suggested presentation delay is added to the time-delay duration. Use it only when you deliberately want that playback buffer; it is not YouTube’s latency mode. AWS origin endpoint guide

LL-HLS: packaging capability, not an end-to-end guarantee

AWS announced Low-Latency HLS packaging support for MediaPackage in May 2023. That establishes a packaging capability, not that every downstream ingest destination or player accepts the output, nor a guaranteed end-to-end latency. Confirm the exact output and destination requirements for your workflow. AWS announcement

Choose YouTube latency and ingest independently

RTMPS encoder ingest

YouTube recommends RTMPS for live encoder ingest. Its encoder guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Test before going live and monitor stream health during the event. YouTube encoder settings

YouTube describes Low latency as under 10 seconds for most viewers and Ultra-low latency as under five seconds for most viewers. Those are descriptions of YouTube modes, not a promise for a particular MediaPackage-to-YouTube path. YouTube also warns that lower latency may cause more playback buffering. Both Low and Ultra-low latency exclude 4K, so a 4K requirement changes which latency modes are available. YouTube latency guidance and YouTube stream settings

YouTube HLS ingest

YouTube supports HLS ingest for certain use cases, including HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP. YouTube says Ultra-low latency is turned off when HLS is selected because HLS sends segments rather than a continuous stream like RTMP. Its documented HLS ingest requirements include TS segments 1–4 seconds long, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte-range mode. Do not assume MediaPackage LL-HLS output is a drop-in replacement for YouTube’s specifically documented HLS ingest format; validate compatibility and requirements end to end. YouTube HLS ingest setup

A safe configuration and test sequence

  1. Choose the goal. Decide whether the priority is viewer latency, resilience during input switching, or rewind and catch-up. Avoid treating one setting as if it serves all three.
  2. Start with no added MediaPackage lag. Set time_delay to 0 and leave suggested presentation delay unset unless you intend to make playback start behind the manifest live point.
  3. Enable time-shift only if needed. Add a startover window when viewers need replay or catch-up. If it is nonzero, keep time_delay lower than that window.
  4. Select the YouTube ingest route. RTMPS is YouTube’s generally recommended encoder route. If using HLS, meet YouTube’s segment, playlist, transport, and byte-range requirements; account for Ultra-low latency being disabled.
  5. Match latency mode to resolution and tolerance. Choose among YouTube’s available modes based on interaction needs and buffering tolerance. If 4K is required, Low and Ultra-low modes are unavailable.
  6. Run a realistic test. Use the intended encoder, MediaPackage endpoint, ingest protocol, output resolution, and viewer setup. Verify the actual delay and watch YouTube stream health; official guidance does not specify one end-to-end latency number for every route and configuration.

Troubleshoot the symptoms that matter

  • Viewers consistently start too far behind: check whether time_delay is nonzero and whether suggested presentation delay is also configured. AWS says these delays add when used together.
  • Catch-up or rewind is unavailable: check whether the origin endpoint has a startover window configured and whether the desired viewing point is within that window.
  • Playback buffers after choosing lower YouTube latency: YouTube warns that lower latency may mean more buffering. Test the path under realistic conditions and choose a higher-latency mode if smooth playback is more important than immediacy.
  • 4K is unavailable with Low or Ultra-low latency: this is a YouTube mode limitation; those modes exclude 4K. Decide which requirement matters more for the stream.
  • Ultra-low latency disappears after selecting HLS: YouTube turns off Ultra-low latency for HLS ingest. This is expected behavior, not a MediaPackage timing setting.
  • YouTube does not accept the HLS feed: verify the documented TS segment duration, rolling playlist limit, HTTPS POST/PUT, and absence of byte-range mode. Also validate that the actual MediaPackage output matches YouTube’s HLS ingest requirements rather than assuming LL-HLS packaging alone is sufficient.
  • The stream is unstable during source switching: if using input redundancy and short output segments, AWS identifies time delay as a possible buffering-reduction measure for that scenario. Treat it as a resilience trade-off, test it, and account for the added playback delay.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that stays live from uploaded video rather than a camera-based live production, StreamNeo is a separate, simpler option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded content from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
