Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For a 30-day month, estimate the electricity cost with 0.72 × average wall watts × your marginal tariff in ₹/kWh. At an illustrative 10 W and ₹6/kWh, that is ₹43.20. Those are assumptions, not a measured Raspberry Pi workload or a universal Indian tariff: your result depends on the Pi, FFmpeg task, attached devices, actual wall draw and electricity rate.
Calculate the monthly electricity cost
Use the reading for the complete setup at the wall, in watts. That includes the power-supply losses and any storage, USB devices, HAT or other peripherals if you want to estimate the increment on your household meter.
Monthly electricity cost (₹) = average wall draw (W) × 24 × billing-period days ÷ 1,000 × marginal tariff (₹/kWh).
For 30 days, this simplifies to 0.72 × average watts × rate per kWh. For a 31-day period, multiply the 30-day estimate by 31/30 if the draw and rate remain constant.

Illustrative 30-day examples
The wattages and ₹6/kWh rate below are arithmetic examples, not observed Pi measurements or a recommended national tariff.
| Average wall draw | Energy in 30 days | Cost at ₹6/kWh |
|---|---|---|
| 5 W | 3.6 kWh | ₹21.60 |
| 10 W | 7.2 kWh | ₹43.20 |
| 15 W | 10.8 kWh | ₹64.80 |
Your bill may also reflect slab rates, subsidies, taxes and fixed charges. Attribute fixed charges to the Pi only if its consumption changes the applicable bill tier; use your current utility bill and tariff for the relevant marginal rate.

Find the right wattage and electricity rate
Measure the complete Pi setup
A plug-in electricity usage meter can give you a wall reading for the equipment you plan to run. This is more useful than treating a board specification as a continuous household draw. Raspberry Pi says its published power measurements are approximate, exclude additional USB-device consumption and may be exceeded when several USB devices or a HAT are attached. See Raspberry Pi’s hardware documentation.
Use your own tariff, not a national assumption
Electricity rates vary by state or union territory, utility and consumer category. The Central Electricity Authority’s 2025 tariff publication, for example, lists a Goa domestic average billing rate of ₹3.50/kWh. That is one entry in its state, utility and category table—not a rate for all of India. Check the current tariff that applies to your connection in the CEA 2025 publication and your bill.

Do not use the power-supply rating as the draw
Raspberry Pi recommends a 27 W supply for Pi 5 and a 15 W supply for Pi 4 Model B. These are recommended supply capacities, not evidence that either board continuously consumes that many watts. The actual wall draw must be measured under your workload and with your peripherals connected. Raspberry Pi hardware documentation
FFmpeg workload changes what you need to measure
Sending an already encoded file, remuxing and live transcoding are different jobs. The available figures do not establish the power draw or real-time performance of an unspecified Pi model running an unspecified video format. Measure your own setup while it performs the task you intend to leave running; do not infer that a wattage example proves the Pi can encode a particular resolution or frame rate in real time.

If you are preparing video for YouTube, its Help page recommends H.264 video settings and says content should be encoded and uploaded at the same frame rate at which it was recorded. That is YouTube format guidance, not a certification that a Raspberry Pi can produce the stream at that frame rate. YouTube recommended upload encoding settings

Electricity is only one part of running FFmpeg at home all month. The Pi and any peripherals are upfront costs; you also need a continuous internet connection and must handle monitoring and recovery if the computer, connection or YouTube stream fails. The electricity formula above does not include hardware purchase costs, internet service or your time.
