YouTube lets you schedule live events, but scheduling an event does not schedule which playlist your encoder plays. To switch playlists by weekday, schedule the YouTube events separately and configure the encoder or a playout service to select the right playlist. For a manual setup, use OBS and change its playlist for each event; for unattended weekday switching, you need a separate scheduler or cloud playout system.
What YouTube scheduling does—and does not do
YouTube Studio schedules a broadcast event and its watch page. Your encoder or playout system supplies the audio and video. Scheduling an event in YouTube does not tell OBS which media playlist to play on a particular weekday, nor does it automatically change the playlist source.
Scheduled events can be shared in advance, promoted, and offer viewers the option to set reminders. But the event calendar and media-playlist calendar are separate jobs. Decide whether you need a distinct YouTube event and watch page each day, or one stream whose content changes according to a schedule; then configure both the YouTube event and the media system accordingly.
Manual weekly setup with YouTube Studio and OBS
This approach is suited to a weekly schedule where someone can prepare each event and select the intended playlist. OBS’s VLC Video source can play a list of media files, but its documented controls are for playlist playback—not choosing a different playlist by weekday.

1. Schedule the YouTube events
- In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go Live > Manage > Schedule stream.
- Create an event for each day you intend to stream. Set that event’s title, description, date and time, visibility, and other details for that day’s content.
- If appropriate, use YouTube’s Reuse settings option to copy an earlier stream’s metadata, settings, and stream key. Review and edit the copied details rather than assuming they all apply to the new event. Treat the stream key as private.
- Share each scheduled event’s watch-page URL with viewers who want to visit or set a reminder.
2. Prepare the OBS playlist source
- Install VLC on the computer running OBS; the VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene you will use for the stream, then add the media files for the playlist. OBS’s VLC source plays multiple files in sequence by default.
- Leave shuffle off if you need the same order each time. Choose whether to enable looping: with looping off, playback ends when the playlist reaches its end; with looping on, it repeats.
- Before each day’s event, load or select the playlist intended for that day. The playlist selection is an encoder-side action, separate from the YouTube event schedule.
3. Connect, verify, and start the event
- Connect OBS to the scheduled YouTube event using its stream connection details.
- Start streaming from OBS and check the preview in YouTube Live Control Room. Starting the encoder sends the signal; it does not by itself complete YouTube’s documented scheduled-event start flow.
- When the preview is ready and you are prepared to begin, click Go live in Live Control Room.
4. End the event cleanly
End the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room, then stop sending from OBS. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that statement does not establish the same archive behavior for streams lasting 12 hours or longer.
Making weekday playlist changes unattended
If no operator will be available to change playlists, you need a separate scheduler or playout layer in addition to YouTube’s event scheduler. Before relying on any setup, test the full cycle: the weekday and time-zone rules, which playlist starts, transitions between files, what happens when a playlist finishes, and how the system responds to missing media or a lost connection.

Recurring cloud playout
Upstream’s help documentation describes daily or weekly recurrence and playlist-related behavior, including ending a stream when a playlist finishes. These are vendor-documented capabilities, not independent performance findings. Confirm that the current service supports your exact weekday-switching pattern, time zone, YouTube event arrangement, transitions, and recovery requirements. Its pricing and geographic availability are not established here.
Building an API-based system
Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API represents scheduled broadcasts as liveBroadcast resources and delivery streams as liveStream resources. An API-driven setup can manage those YouTube resources, but it still needs a separate media system that chooses and transmits the correct playlist at the scheduled time. Creating or managing a broadcast through the API does not itself create weekday playlist-selection logic.

Troubleshooting common scheduling problems
- The correct YouTube event is scheduled, but the wrong videos play. The event schedule does not select OBS media. Load the intended playlist in the encoder before starting that day’s event.
- OBS does not show a VLC Video source. Install VLC on the computer running OBS, then check the source list again.
- The playlist order changes unexpectedly. Check that shuffle is off in the VLC Video source.
- The playlist stops after the last file. If it should repeat, enable looping. If it should end the stream at the end, confirm the rest of your playout setup is configured to handle playlist completion as intended.
- The encoder is sending video, but the scheduled event has not started. Check the Live Control Room preview, then click Go live when ready. The documented flow requires this control-room action.
- A reused event has incorrect details or an unexpected key. Reuse settings copies metadata, settings, and the stream key. Review the event’s copied information and key settings before connecting.
- The stream is not archived as expected. YouTube’s stated automatic-archive behavior applies to streams under 12 hours; do not assume that statement covers longer streams.

Copyright and channel-policy checks
A scheduled event or looping system does not grant rights to the music, gameplay, or other material in a playlist. Use media you own or have permission to stream, and check YouTube’s current copyright rules before scheduling. Repeatedly broadcasting the same recordings also does not guarantee monetization: assess your channel against YouTube’s current monetization and reused-content policies. A playlist schedule controls playback; it does not resolve rights or eligibility questions.
