Raspberry Pi 5 vs VPS Cost for a 24/7 YouTube Stream in India

A Raspberry Pi 5 can have low running costs if you already own it, while a VPS trades setup for recurring rental. Here’s how to compare both fairly in India.

Neither a Raspberry Pi 5 nor a VPS is automatically the cheapest way to keep a YouTube stream running around the clock in India. A Pi’s real cost includes its hardware, measured electricity use, any extra internet or backup power, and your time maintaining it. A VPS replaces most home hardware and power costs with recurring rental, but its renewal price, bandwidth terms, encoder capacity, and recovery responsibility need checking.

Compare both over the same 30-day period using your actual electricity tariff and the exact VPS plan you can buy. The price and plan figures below are snapshots, not a like-for-like performance test.

What costs are you comparing?

A Raspberry Pi is a computer you own and run at home; a VPS is a rented computer in a provider’s data centre. Either can potentially send a prerecorded video to YouTube continuously, but neither is guaranteed to sustain a particular stream profile just because it is called a Pi or a streaming VPS.

For a fair comparison, separate the cash bill from operational effort. Include the Pi’s initial setup cost and ongoing power, or the VPS’s verified recurring bill and any add-ons. Then account separately for internet reliability, outages, setup and recovery time, and whether the machine can encode your chosen resolution and frame rate continuously.

Raspberry Pi 5: upfront cost and monthly running cost

Count the complete setup, not just the board

A Pi 5 listing is only one part of the home setup. Budget for a suitable power supply, storage, a case or cooling if needed, and any backup-power equipment you decide to use. Raspberry Pi’s setup documentation recommends a 27 W USB-C supply for Pi 5; with a 5 V, 3 A supply, downstream USB current is limited to 600 mA. The Raspberry Pi OS Lite setup guide recommends at least 8 GB of SD storage. See Raspberry Pi’s getting-started documentation.

A retailer listing snapshot retrieved in 2026 showed a Raspberry Pi 5 4GB board at ₹6,499 including GST. That is a time-sensitive board price, not the cost of a working, resilient streaming setup; check the listing and add the accessories you actually need. The Pi 5’s US$60 4GB and US$80 8GB figures were historical launch prices announced in 2023, not current India prices. See the Raspberry Pi 5 launch announcement and the India retailer’s Pi 5 4GB listing.

Estimate electricity from measured wall draw

Use a plug-in power meter to measure the complete setup at the wall while it is doing the intended work. For a 30-day month, calculate:

Monthly energy (kWh) = average wall draw (watts) × 720 hours ÷ 1,000.

Raspberry Pi says Pi 5 consumption can reach around 12 W under its most intensive workloads. At a constant 12 W for 720 hours, that is 8.64 kWh. This is an illustration based on a manufacturer-stated peak, not measured typical streaming consumption; the actual encoder load and power-supply losses should be measured.

Multiply your measured kWh by the marginal rate that applies on your electricity bill. India has no single household rate suitable for everyone: the Central Electricity Authority tariff compilation lists state- and slab-specific figures. A listed rate may apply only under its stated tariff conditions, so use your own bill rather than treating any one state’s rate as a national average. See the CEA Electricity Tariff & Duty compilation.

Include broadband and reliability costs

Count the broadband bill only if continuous streaming causes you to upgrade service or incur paid data use. Check your ISP’s fair-use policy, upload stability, and outage history. Power cuts, router failures, ISP downtime, storage wear, and the time you spend restoring a stream are real trade-offs even when they do not show up as a separate monthly charge.

VPS: recurring rental and plan limits

Verify the renewal bill and what the plan permits

Use the actual renewal price, not just an introductory offer. Before choosing a plan, verify its bandwidth allowance and traffic policy, CPU or GPU and encoder capacity, remote access, operating system, permitted stream count, and support scope. Confirm that the resources can sustain your intended encoding workload: bandwidth allowance alone does not establish that a VPS can encode and push an uninterrupted stream.

As a provider-advertised example, NivoHost’s page listed a lowest streaming RDP tier at ₹699 per month for one stream at 360p/10fps, with 20 TB bandwidth, 2 CPU cores, and 4 GB RAM. Its ₹999 tier advertised 480p/15fps; higher tiers claim greater resolution and resources. The provider also advertises tax-included pricing and 20 TB on the listed tiers. These are provider claims, not an independent performance test; check current availability, renewal terms, and suitability directly. See NivoHost’s 24/7 YouTube Live Streaming Hosting page.

Check data use against the video bitrate

At a constant video bitrate for 30 days, the approximate video-only traffic is:

H.264 example recommended by YouTube Video bitrate Approximate data over 30 days
720p30 3 Mbps 0.97 TB
1080p30 5 Mbps 1.62 TB
1080p60 6 Mbps 1.94 TB

These are decimal-unit calculations from bitrate and 30 days. They exclude audio and protocol overhead. At YouTube’s recommended 5 Mbps H.264 video bitrate for 1080p30, video alone is about 1.62 TB for 30 days—below the 20 TB allowance advertised on the NivoHost example plan, if that allowance and its terms apply. That comparison says nothing by itself about sustained encoding performance or stream continuity.

Set the stream profile before choosing hardware

Your target quality affects both encoding demands and data volume. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingest, constant bitrate (CBR), a keyframe interval of two seconds (not over four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. Its recommended H.264 video examples include 720p30 at 3 Mbps, 1080p30 at 5 Mbps, and 1080p60 at 6 Mbps. AV1 and H.265 recommendations differ—for example, 720p30 at 6 Mbps and 1080p30 at 10 Mbps—so use the table for the codec you actually select rather than mixing values across codecs.

Run a speed test and test a representative video with similar motion and audio before relying on a 24/7 setup. Monitor YouTube’s stream health. The National Informatics Centre’s webcast service requests 2–4 Mbps of dedicated network bandwidth per stream in its own service context; that is not a universal YouTube minimum and does not replace YouTube’s resolution-specific recommendations.

The Pi 5 includes a 4Kp60 HEVC decoder, but a decoder specification does not demonstrate real-time encoding capacity for a particular OBS or FFmpeg profile. The cited sources do not establish sustained Pi 5 encoding performance at 1080p or 4K for your workload. Test the exact codec, resolution, frame rate, and content on the actual machine before depending on it.

  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  • Pi monthly equivalent: complete setup cost ÷ useful life in months + measured monthly electricity + any incremental internet cost + your chosen allowance for maintenance time and interruptions.
  • VPS monthly equivalent: verified renewal bill + data or software add-ons + a comparable allowance for management and interruptions.

In shorthand, let H be the complete Pi setup cost, L its useful life in months, E measured monthly electricity cost, I any incremental internet cost, and R the value you assign to maintenance time and expected interruption cost. The Pi’s approximate monthly equivalent is H/L + E + I + R. Let V be the verified VPS renewal bill plus any data or software add-ons and comparable management or interruption cost. Compare the totals using your own values; a hardware purchase and a rental bill are not directly comparable without a time period and lifespan assumption.

Which option fits your situation?

A Pi may suit you if…

  • You already own the Pi and suitable accessories, so you are comparing marginal rather than full setup cost.
  • Your home broadband has stable upstream capacity and no restrictive data policy for continuous use.
  • You can tolerate home power and internet outages, and are comfortable diagnosing and recovering the setup yourself.
  • You have tested the intended stream profile on the actual device rather than assuming its video decoder proves encoding ability.

A VPS may suit you if…

  • You prefer not to keep a computer and home connection running for the stream.
  • The provider’s verified renewal price, bandwidth terms, access, and stream policy fit your use.
  • You have confirmed that the VPS can sustain the specific encode you need and understand who is responsible for recovery.

Or let it run in the cloud

If managing a Pi or VPS is not the point of the project, StreamNeo is a managed way to keep prerecorded video live on YouTube. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; it loops from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams what you upload at up to 4K 60fps with no re-encode, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.

Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start your free day.
